Phillips likely has a slightly better shot thank Frank but I doubt either make the team. Six pre-season games under a new coach isn't that many when you think about it, particularly without any rookie games. They're going to want the last couple of pre-season games to largely be tune-ups for the regular season. So it's going to be an extremely short window for guys making their case. Some of that has to happen in practice simply earning a chance in a game to begin with. They can't afford a slow start from anyone so it makes you wonder if certain vets are off pace what the reaction will be. Carbery shouldn't overreact to a limited sample but also shouldn't underreact should any upstarts earn serious looks to start off. I'm not sure I expect serious upstarts to materialize but we'll see. Are there roster hopefuls that stand to add not just younger legs/pace but a higher work rate? It's not that high a threshold yet it's hard to say if anyone aside from Malenstyn and Protas are ready to put in that degree of work all-around.
It would be helpful if Carbery were able to at least up the internal competition to make some of the more entrenched vets uncomfortable and on point. That should be a given under any new HC but with this group...
I don't think too many of the vets are in jeopardy given limited trade value but I could see Mantha or perhaps Milano hitting waivers should they not be sharp, even with Pacioretty sidelined, depending on how some upstarts play. Everyone on the fringes has to compete as though it's now or never with little time to waste. Anyone not making a clear statement should be pretty quickly thinned out.
