The moves Dubas has made are pretty favourable for the short term but that team is not going to compete for a cup and long-term they are getting worse. Overall I’m happy because of that.

If I'm reading this right, it means no Caps games will be nationally broadcast on NHL Network--which is only available via cable and Fubo (I think), making it impossible for Caps fans who subscribe to other/bigger streaming services (like Hulu Live, YouTube TV, and ESPN+) to (legally) watch games on NHLN?

If that's the case, I'll jump for joy.

Does this free up the up the entirety of his salary or are the limitations? Not familiar with NHL salary cap procedures, sorry!
I'm not entirely sure but I think retiring frees him up unless he was a 35+ contract.

He's not, far as I can tell, but if he were then suddenly things would get much more complicated and predicated on bonuses paid over years.

Don't love linking Pittsburgh related content here but they explain a lot of this really well.

I think Carl Hagelin was simultaneously underrated and overpaid if that makes sense.

He was one of the best defensive forwards on the team until his final year and was never as bad as his biggest detractors suggested, but $2.75M for 4 years is way too much for a 4th liner and PKer whose hands made Jason Chimera look like Connor McDavid.

Hags is still winning with his first career in the bank (not even talking about potentially generational earnings in the bank.

At 34 I as only 4 years out of a BA in English so barely into my professional career. For Haglin much that he could do with roughly 3/4 of his professional careen in his life ahead. Enjoy.

Agreed. Hags was good player for his role. And also overpaid.

But that contract was done before COVID, everyone thought cap was going up a lot so ill give a pass for BM on this one. If he stayed healthy he could have been useful, and/or traded. Hags-Dowd-Hathaway could have been a cup calibre shutdown line!

Seemed like a good guy. Maybe still is :)

On another note i wonder how our board (and also the general reaction) would have reacted if we traded similar package for EK65. Would that have been a cool all in move with great vision as it seems to be for Pens, or would it have been a desperate last push for whats inevitably not happening with the visionless cost of our future.

Before the TDL we were pretty much exactly set up as the Pens were. We decided to sell and got couple really cool pieces for future out of it. Pens decided to buy and still didnt make the playoffs. Now they doubled down and just for EK people see them having ”vision” and ”roster building”, but i mean, we already did our EK65 trade when we went for Sandin. We traded for a young future top4 guy who is ready to play right away but nobody seems to even remember, its just ”uh we didnt do anything”.

It would have been a crushing blow. Short-term it would have been a brilliant move, especially if it was one like the Penguins made in which they cleared their garbage in the process. But long-term i don't think that move is going to look great. Sharks did this ''one last go'' thing to give their elder core a chance in 2018-2019 when they acquired Karlsson and E.Kane and look how that went. Sure they got that one go and made the Playoffs next season but they were in the basement the year after that and stayed there. Penguins atleast didn't make the same mistake (possibly) that the Sharks did where they ended up giving up that future 1st rounder the year AFTER they made the Playoffs. That being said if the Penguins pick next season is a top-10 pick then it automatically moves to 2025 and for that season... that pick could be a top-5 one.

So... would you accept the downfall being much longer to get that short-term (likely 1 season) gain? To have what? Very small chance of winning the Cup? I would say no but i don't blame ones who don't.

I stayed in Cranberry PA next to the Pens training facility last night, almost took a dump in the parking lot. For whatever reason it got me a bit fired up for hockey season. Downtown Pittsburgh was pretty cool I’m not going to lie, I’d like to make it to a game there this year. But uhh yeah f*** Pittsburgh

I am attempting to will myself to be positive about this season but I just don’t see reasons to be. They ended up bringing back the same team that they admitted needed changes but they couldn’t get it done. Tough times.

I'm interested in Carbery's impact if nothing else. Does his energy and attention to detail rub off on entrenched vets? Or are they beyond that change going far enough? If there's a concern to me it's defensively minus Orlov in being able to hang tough in highly competitive games.

Interesting question. Obviously, two different teams with different strengths and weaknesses. I think Karlsson is a much better pick up for Pens than he would have been for us. Caps issues are in the top-6, specifically at center. That said, Pens essentially got Karlsson for free. It should have cost them a 1st just to get rid of Granlund. A 2nd to get rid of Petry. How did they get Karlsson out of it?

Still, I don't think Karlsson is what Caps need. Now, if there was a center available of Karlsson's calibre, that would be a different story. As it stands, Caps are most likely headed toward a ~10th place finish in the East. What's the point? After 5 years of without a playoff series win and with the team on a clear downward trend, I'd rather see them pick a direction. This is just more aimless floating. So, for me, it would be NO to Karlsson but YES to the general idea of accepting some risk to meaningfully improve the roster.

I think we all should expect a season where they are in a fight to make the playoffs all year long.

I think Keumper will be better. Someone on D needs to make a step forward this year, and the offense needs at least 2-3 surprises (trades, bounce backs, young/unexpected impact players) to make them just decent….
