You only move Dowd and Chucky if you plan on using the returning assets to help retool the top 6.

I’d only move Dowd for a 1st or a nice prospect. I know that sounds crazy for a fourth liner but he’s on a cheap contract, one of the best PKers and he’s the only one who seems like they can win a face off.
I know we sound like asset hoarders but unless people want this slide backwards to go all the way back, they need these valuable deployment/overachieving types to be where they are now.

Look, if a team really blows the doors off you have to consider it, but if they really want to angle towards a reload instead of a rebuild and not suck past Ovechkin these are good players to keep.

The problem is that Dowd will be 34 in May, so I wouldn't count on him having another season as good as this one, especially after the Ovechkin era.

Like Beagle, who scored 7 goals in his final season with the Caps, and then 7 during his entire 4-year contract.

If they are realistic for the playoffs, then yeah, moving a good 4C would require an overpayment.
But if they are not, or it's an offseason opportunity, Dowd for a 2nd or something sounds very good to me.

Oshie heating up lately. 2 G 2 A in the first 22 games and now he has 5 G 1 A in the last 4 games.

If he keeps up production for awhile he is a known playoff performer after joining the Caps. So could have some value espescially if the Caps retain.

Still right now the team is in the race. A couple of the easier games on the schedule with another Blues game and Minnesota before they will have a very hard schedule the next 7 games:
1st placed Canucks
2nd placed Boston
4th placed Colorado x2
5th placed Florida
7th placed Dallas

4 of those 6 games away aswell. Also in there is a game vs Montreal.

So I think after those games on february 13 they will know if they are in a position to make the playoffs if they outperform expectations in those games. If they loose most they will fall off in the playoff race and can start focusing on bringing in younger assets and trade veterans.

Great post. This team battles, but a stretch like that will either propel them or sink them.

The Caps have accomplished much, without any meaningful contribution from Ovechkin. I feel like things are bound to start bouncing his way.

Especially because we don’t have a ton of internal options. Riley Sutter could be a 4th liner in a pinch, however he isn’t going to provide near the offensive production that we see from Dowd. And is Sutters skating good enough to be in the NHL full time? Lappy isn’t an ideal 4th line center.

Same thing with Chucky. Stevenson is having a solid season, but he’s also playing behind the best team in the AHL. I like him a lot but don’t really want to rush him like they did with Sammy.

I’m sure that Dowd and Chucky both are high on the list of NHL players who are playing above their current salary. Like you said, if someone gives you an offer you can’t refuse, you take it and run and deal with the ramifications later.

You can always find a 4th line center and worst case scenario we put Protas there for a season.

Honestly, If Chychrun isn’t content on re-signing in Ottawa and with Monahan being a pending UFA. Those two additions would make for a pretty interesting playoff team IMO.

- Lapierre and a 2025 3rd for Monahan
- Jensen, Milano, 2025 1st, 2024 3rd for Chychrun

Ovie-Monahan-Wilson
Pacioretty-Strome-Oshie
Protas-McMichael-Mantha
Malenstyn-Dowd-NAK

Chychrun-Carlson
Sandin-TVR
Fehervary-Bear

Kuemper
Lindgren

With Kuznetsov, Phillips, Alexeyev and Edmundson

pass….probably pass on that Lappy trade also.

Please do not buy. we are actually not very good and somehow are still in the race
Maybe they are “not very good” because they are two good pieces short of being very good? And maybe Monahan and Chychrun are those pieces? That would make them very good, which is more fun to watch.
