Things I know about hockey:
- Shitty teams don't go on 8-1-1 runs
- Nor doth they go 10 gms hide-nor-hair of a PPG against
- And let it be said... Verily, teams of the caca type don't kill 23 straight
I mean, we had a better run last year and still missed the playoffs and ended up with a top 10 pick...

We had a 12-1-2 stretch last year (started as 10-1 fwiw, two 5 game win streaks with a single loss in between)

c'mon now, I might have to ask you to delete your avatar b/c I associate Phish with something more... positive ;)
I'm actually pretty optimistic about this team in 2-3 years. I just think we have to brace ourselves for a rough year this year and probably next year too, depending on how quickly kids like Miro and Leonard develop.

I'd love to be proven wrong. If we somehow keep this up I'd be ecstatic.

We‘re not exactly knocking down a murderer’s row of competition, but I‘m most enthused at the recent, more consistent compete level Carbs has been able to get out of them.

Hot streaks come and go….so the next 10 games (will take them to the 25 game mark) is huge to see if they can maintain, or if they wilt.

They are 5th in the East with 20pts while playing the fewest games so far (tied with the Rangers and Sens). Everyone else ahead or behind has played 1-3 games more. 6 out of the next 10 away….West coast trip plus Chicago….

Need people to stay healthy…

It's a small sample size but I must say I'm very impressed with Carbury. his demeanor behind the bench, his willingness to play the youngsters AND put them in positions to succeed, the positive and constructive feedback he gives (sprinkled in with occasional messages), and the general flow of play. I don't know whether it's more freedom or more detail, but the team's passing and general sharpness is far superior to any point in the past few years. Even in our early season struggles it was the defense and goaltending letting us down, the system on offense looked pretty good (minus the finishing).

If Philly is selling at the deadline, I wouldn’t hate bringing back Hathaway for the postseason push + next season. He has a bit of a rich cap hit for a 4th liner ($2.375M) but he’s a gritty guy who can also score, has great chemistry with Dowd, and is the kind of depth you need to compete in the spring. With our newfound cap space, keeping him at that number next year shouldn’t be an issue.

We really gotta find a way to dump Kuznetsov.

My favorite prospect FTW! Fun game 2 points.

Love Hathaway but our 4th line is killing it. Something would have to go very wrong for them to spend to augment that part of the roster.

As I stated earlier — Dowd is what stirs the drink on our 4th line. It seems the wingers all play a “level up” when with him.

I love Hathaway. Always will. However if we are going to add a forward and salary, I think it needs it be top 9F or top 4D

In the context of a hockey trade, I agree. From a deadline perspective, I don’t want to spend significant draft capital on a rental. If we’re going to buy at the deadline, it ought to be for cheap, depth additions that bring a complementary element/skill set. I don’t think our lineup is tough enough for playoff hockey as currently constituted.

agree as of now at least, this isn't an all-in year. but if they have an opportunity to add a piece that makes sense longer term and get the young'ns a taste of of the NHL postseason, they should.

But also Laine's got all the same issues.
Honestly, Laine would be reminiscent of a few reclamation projects they've made before. I think like Connoly specifically.

Ignoring that he costs more then Kuzy, I could see him finding some success here. We also desperately need goal scorers, plenty of facilitators. His only real issue is he'd get zero PP time here.

they absolutely have the assets to go after a 1C in trade. and in another year, they'll have the cap space to go after a 1C in UFA if that's the better option.
It's not about whether or not they can get a 1C in a trade. It's about whether that's a good use of assets compared to other holes going forward. I don't think having strome and mcmicahel as 1c/2c is as bad as having Carlson/sandin as the 1d/2d, or having your top 4 wingers being ovie, Wilson, Milano, and mantha/oshie/philips. Center is not the biggest shortcoming in this roster.

Realistically, all aspects of the team need some improvement in the next few years, and the limited pieces the caps have need to be used very carefully to address areas of greatest need. Filling a gap at center this year limits their ability to improve the defence or the wingers - that's the real cost of trading any pieces right now. You're only examining the cost right now, ignoring the downstream impacts of choosing to fill a hole that, quite frankly, isn't that big. The current retooling will take a few years, and trying to rush that process will just prolong the mediocrity.

Strome is an above average 1C. Even if we were to get a fair deal, any significant upgrade would cost us too much in terms of picks and prospects. What we need to do if we're going to have any real chance in the near future is figure out what to do with Oshie and Kuznetsov. They both get a lot of minutes and they're frankly just bad. Hopefully we can do that with cap rather than assets, because mortgaging the future for short term improvement would be a disaster.
I'm all for trading kuzy with retention. 40% retention on his contract should make him marketable. It's dead cap either way, so we might as well let some other team suffer through his on-ice performance.

As for oshie, just waive him. See if he can gain some confidence and scoring touch in Hershey. Replace him with literally anyone - Philips is better than he is right now, miroshnichenko would be an upgrade, and even mantha deserves the ice time more than oshie. Caps'd get 1.125M$ in cap savings by sending him to Hershey, and that covers a 13F.

Huh, never thought about sending Oshie down. Well, its not that bad probably. But they will scratch him long before waiving. So lets wait.
