tbh that's up for debate. getting shellacked in the first round does not a whole lot beyond get a crappy draft pick and hurt some growing confidence.

They need players to get better overall. Playoffs can help that, but it's not a 1 + 1 = 2 type of a situation. It's much more nebulous.
If they make the playoffs I don't think they'll get shellacked, but they've lost 20 games this year by 3 or more goals and have constantly bounced back.

I happened upon SPORTS CLUB STATS recently. It includes outcomes of other upcoming games. No idea how their model works. They are even lower than MoneyPuck at 31.8%. Add 9.5% if Caps win tonight. Deduct 0.3% if Sabres win at Kraken.
Awesome! I used to visit that site all the time, but at some point it seemed like it stopped updating. Glad to see it is back up.

They actually have the Caps at 52.5% if games were 50/50. But yeah, down at 31.8% when weighted. Obviously it doesn't think we're very good and it sees us playing good teams for the rest of the year.

I think we're better than the models say, because we're playing better than we did the first half of the year. In a lot of ways this is a completely different team.

Im salivating a bit at the thought of Miro with two years of NHL experience and ten pounds of muscle being centered by Leonard. Might not be a cup champ line but will be a b*tch to play against.

Yeah Miroshnichenko has shown some serious flashes in very limited minutes so far. He can really rip the puck and has eyes in the back of his head.

Question will be can he put it all together consistently.

Couple days old so this may change but Micah posts these point projections every couple days. The safe zone appears to be 93 points, maybe 92 to get in

Going 9-5-2 might just get us there…so we have some losses we can build in here, which will be needed with a tough schedule. It’s okay if we drop a stinker here and there. But we need Ws and we need OT appearances, every point counts

Yeah, tonight’s not the night though. Need these two points.

Why make that assumption….just to support your argument?

No tougher competition than the playoffs….the sooner we can get our young player’s feet wet in that atmosphere the better. It allows them to experience the pinnacle of NHL competition and should help them understand even better what’s required to succeed in the postseason as an individual.
It might help the players on the club. Though, do we really think when this team went out to Montreal with a whimper they were better for it the experience of it? Did it really make much of a difference? Did the players grow up overnight for it?

I'm not saying it won't help. But for me, the way this team gets significantly better is likely through players who are not here on the roster. Some growth from guys here, especially the younger ones, will also make it easier. If Miro is a top line player. If Hendrix can be a point producing center. If they get growth out of young defensemen. It's also to the benefit of the rebuild of the roster.

But at the end of the day, getting the best bullets for the gun to get top talent is likely what gets them further to a return.

I'm not saying they can't advance in the playoffs. Crazier stuff has happened. But it's really turning back the clock for a lot of guys, and going way against the metrics if that's gonna happen.

If Ovi teaches him how to shoot, Wilson how to hit, Protas how to hustle and Oshie how to be a teamplayer then he can become pretty great!

On this roadtrip (5 on 5 shot attempts for and against)
Miroshnichenko CF 57 CA 47 54.8%
Capitals 169 CF 208 CA 44.8%
These are good teams on the road

I don't care how they end up, as long as the kids keep getting meaningful minutes.

Growth from the young players is the best thing for this hockey club.

that sort of demeans itself, as there is no as meaningful minutes and no better place for growth as playoffs hockey.

Im still little pessimistic of our chances, but here we are. Set for another big disappointment :)

ESPN Power Rankings 10/30/23, Caps 31st
Caps were 4-3-1 and had won 3 in a row, this persons opinion of the Caps was so poor that 3 wins hadn’t moved the Caps up 1 spot since SJS was entrenched at 32

Expect Detroit to win even tought they have been horible lately. Not sure who to hope for in PIT-NJD. I believe next years Pens pick might be even higher so them having a top 10 pick this year might be better than a top 5 next year.

Toronto hopefully win and get tired tomorow against us. Isles and Tampa with hard games. While Buffalo would have to be very good to beat Vancouver on a B2B.

If we cared about predictions, we would still be in the red tank

Caps are currently -27 in goal differential. This will probably change, but since the NHL moved to the wild card format 10 years ago few teams have made the playoffs with a negative GD, nevermind -27.

The closest I could find was DET in 2015-16 at -13.

Prior to that, in the old SE Division, the Panthers won in 2011-12 with -24.

The last team I could find with a worse GD to make the playoffs was STL in 1995-96 (80pts, .488 winning%, -29 GD, 5th seed). They beat TOR in 6 games, then lost to DET in 7.

Since we haven't clinched a playoff berth yet, we have to root for NJD.

A neutral team at 5v5 chance share, an improved PP, and a hot goalie.

They're not contenders but this is the profile of a playoff team, even if for the first ~45 games they didn't profile as one.

Patches finally looking like he belongs. Jimi is the new Nicky B. on the PP.

These guys deserve a great welcome back against TO tomorrow night.
