RE: Salary

The league announced that the 4 players on leave for the Hockey Canada will have their salaries not held against the cap. I don't have an issue with that, but it looks like it's just straight off the books. As far as I know, even LTIR still hinders and hurts your cap movement in some ways, that's not even including bonuses paid out that impact cap space. My wonderings are two fold. One, does the player assistance program get folded into LTIR? And two, do we think we might see some examination of cap relief during the next CBA? It's maybe a bit of a mixed signal from the league that teams employing players under investigation for crimes are recipients of more cap flexibility than players who have hurt players.

Team stinks and is boring is one reason, but how much of this is due to the move to Monumental?

The product on ice is a significant factor, but one of the issues that has been gnawing at me is the schedule. Before January 1 we had completed the series against two of our Metro Division rivals (Islanders and Jackets). That's crazy.

The bulk of March and April games should be against Division rivals. This schedule that involves a home and away meet against every team in the NHL during the regular season just doesn't work for me. I can't get that excited when the Capitals are playing the Sharks, Blues or Wild as opposed to when they line up against the Pens, Flyers, Rangers etc..

You got four Divisions, 8 teams to a division. I would like to see teams play 8 games during the season against each of their Division rivals (4 home and 4 away). That's 56 games. Then the remaining 24 games (yes, I'm reducing the schedule by 2 games to a 80 game season) are against the teams in one other Division (24 games, you play each team with that other Division 3 times). Each season you'll play a different division outside of your division, so yes you'll only get to see McDavid or Matthews at the Capital Center once or twice every three years. A side benefit is the economic benefits to teams as their travel costs should be reduced.

ESPN + to me is a disaster (not a fan when we are playing the Penguins and ESPN+ carries the game). I do like the TNT games and their panel.

The league chose the best possible road to staying out of this scandal as much as possible while not causing friction with the players union. I have to say i agree with them.
On one hand they cannot let players charged with rape continue playing. On the other hand they have not been tried yet and did not have a chance to present their defense and tell their side of the story. It would not sit well with the players union if anything happened to their contracts before the official verdicts are in. Punishing teams for something that they had no control over is also not something that will bode well for the league altogether. These teams are already being punished by losing players from their lineup.

So yea, nhl picked the right way to go. Life goes on while the investigation/trial/settlement or whatever is finalized and in the meantime everyone still gets paid so there is no trouble with the union.

Not to be callous, but I was curious what the cap implications if any might be with Kuznetsov's situation.

Still hope for the best for Kuzy. I just don't want him near the team, especially the young players i.e. AA.

I think you can put him on LTIR if you want. you could also try and trade him so you can get under the cap and pay the $2mil bonus to Wheeler this year instead of next. I guess it would depend who is on his 10 team no trade list. it would require a sweetener and the acquiring team would either leave him on LTIR till the end of his contract or buy him out. IMO. only a few teams have the space for that.

on a completely unrelated side note since games are resuming

who is the chowderhead Audio Engineer this season?
Anyone else notice the low db levels coming back from every commercial?
Most noticeably with Alexa and Alan, someone has lowered their mics by 12db or something and takes their sweet time to come back to peak levels, incredibly annoying (to me at least)

No I agree it's the correct route, but you always got to look at it from the squeaky wheel angle especially since I imagine having a soft cap is going to be a push at the new CBA.

It bears mentioning though, that Cap Friendly seems to list out the player assistance program as a separate form of cap relief. So I'm actually starting to think it might literally be like what they did with those 4 and the contract is simply erased from the books for the time being. This also makes sense because you wouldn't want teams interfering/pushing for a return when a guy is in this program, so it would make the most sense that the contract essentially is just totally invisible (presumably bonuses accrued before that freeze still are a hit though to your cap).

Players in the player assistance program do not provide salary cap relief, they simply just don’t count against the roster. Kuzy’s salary is still on the books while in the program.

I’m assuming that’s so teams don’t circumvent the salary cap by having players enter the program? I don’t see any other explanation as to why he’d have to count against the salary cap if he isn’t playing

It’s the parity…..depth and systems have never meant more and there‘s just less star power to make a lot of matchups entertaining every night. Guys get paid big and early in their careers, and the game has lost some intensity IMO.
Maybe. For me it's more tuning in to a best case scenario of a 2-1 OT win courtesy of a GWG of TvRs grandmothers heel.

Please play AA or trade him. Honestly, he looks better than 3,6 and 57.

This is Laviolette level bullshit, and shitty f***ing asset management.

Kuzy was in this program in 2019 after his positive cocaine test. So take Carbery's initial comment as a slip of the tongue or whatever.

I would hope the league has what would essentially be a "no movement" rule for players who go into the player assistance program. Regardless of what a guy is going through that causes him to enter the program, the potentiality of being jettisoned by your team would likely give rise to second thoughts about signing up in the first place. OTOH, giving a team at least some salary relief when a guy enters the pgm makes some sense. If a player getting close to the league minimum goes in, then his team gets a roster spot back - making things just about even. But if a high-paid player goes in, his team likely cannot replace the player with the roster spot they get back without at least some salary relief coming back too.

Nick Bonino on a league minimum contract is incoming. I can feel it lol. Add to the retirement home
Chytil's done for the year. Rangers went with Brodzinski and Goodrow as their 3C and 4C last night. Laviolette is comfortable with players that he knows and has had a history with, i.e. Matt Irwin and Craig Smith. He know's Dowd.

The app has been buggy ass.

But it also feels like Caps games have been going up against football a lot this season. I've had multiple screens going many, many times.

Maybe ratings will improve now that football is basically over.

They need to sell and they need to sell now before the market shrinks. There's no reason to wait, they aren't turning it around this year. Get what you can for Dowd and Lindgren, and then continue the selloff this offseason.

The fans have spoken and they want no more of this nonsense!
