Can we do All Star break / half season feedback on our defense?

Carlson - has been our best D - offensively and defensively
Fehervary - improved on last season and our 2nd best D
Jensen - has been awful. Hard to fathom why after his two previous career seasons. Is it the coaching change?
Sandin - hasn't copped much flak around here, but I think he's been very underwhelming this season.
TvR - has been pretty bad.
Edmundson - has he really been as bad as many here think? He's played 31 games and is only a -2
Bear - totally unimpressed with him.

I actually think our Defense is much better than our forward group. I think Carbery has been trying to leverage the skating ability of our D in order to make up for the lack of speed and playmaking ability of the forwards. This has been to the detriment to the goalscoring of the Defense IMO. I'm taking this in to account when I evaluate the players.

Carlson: I really don't understand why Carlson gets as much criticism as he does on these boards. He eats some of the highest minutes / game of any player in the league while going against the oppositions best. If you watch him play, he doesn't make a lot of flashy plays, but instead plays a very veteran game where his contributions are more subtle. I think it takes a more trained eye to notice the real value he adds. I'd like to see him get more opportunities to unleash his shot in the second half of the season, particularly on the PP.

Fever: Is having a really solid season, but I would like to see him use his skating to join the rush a little more often.

Jensen / TVR: I think they both look about the same as they did last year ability wise, but it can't be denied that the offensive contributions have diminished. There's a reason our entire defensive corps has been MIA when it comes to offense, and I don't think it's all on the players.

Edmundson: He's had up and down games. He started off looking really bad, but has actually gotten a little more consistent, but I really don't think he has been a great fit with the Carbery system.

Bear: Really not impressed. He's been terrible defensively and hasn't provided the offensive spark we had hoped for. Still time for him to turn it around, though.

Sandin: Has regressed this year. He looked dynamic offensively last season, but we've only seen glimpses of it this year. I don't think this is necessarily his fault, but more how he is being utilized. I want to see him given PP1 time, because I think he has the skills to develop into the future PP quarterback on the team.

I'm not convinced that Carbery's man to man coverage in the defensive zone is generating the kind of posession and transitions that this team needs to gain speed through the neutral zone and sustained pressure in the offensive zone. It's the reason I think our Defense corps has struggled adding goals.

Arguably, I think our Defense corps has better skaters than our forwards. Because of the deficiency in the speed of our forwards, Carbery has our defense skating the puck through the neutral zone leading the rush way more than they should be. Other than shots from the point, Defenseman usually get their goals by being the late man sneaking in to open space. They can't ever do that if they are always the ones leading the rush.

The team needs more speed and playmaking forwards up front. Until we get those players and restore balance, we will continue to struggle to get offensive production from our D.

Regular season Carlson is Day Man, Champion of the Sun.

Playoff Carlson is Night Man.

Isn't "activating the D and asking them to do too much offensively at the expense of team defense and goaltending" exactly the same problem we had with Lavi?

Seems like that's how the roster has been constructed for some time.

Figured the game would be tonight and not the afternoon. Missed the first game but somewhat OK.

Carlson was fantastic during the cup run and for many seasons before it.

After the cup, his defense became less effective IMO. There are some truly awful Erik Karlsson caliber low lights where guys just skated around him to get an easy path to the net. From 2019-2023 that was happening way too often.

This season I think he's playing much better. Especially to start the season, he looked better than he has for a while.

Why wouldn't Dowd be worth a first round pick?

He is a premier shutdown center and not too shabby offensively. As I mentioned before Edmonton should be all over Dowd. They've been let down year after year by their bottom 6 and team defense. 2 postseasons of Dowd for a first round pick would be a bargain for them. Start a bidding war and maybe DC could get even more!

I do think contenders would be wise to look at Washington for depth pieces. It’s basically the only thing we’ve been good at for the past couple years.

Dowd and Lindgren in particular would be excellent acquisitions for Edmonton or Colorado. Both could use a premier shutdown centerman and both need another goalie. I wouldn’t feel too comfortable with just Georgiev or Skinner…

Getting both for two playoff runs at less than $2.5 AAV combined is a steal for a 1st and a 2nd

I’m not totally sure on the CBA rules, but if teams can trade for our cheaper players and we retain Dowd and Lindy can they pay less or close to the league min contract to cheat the cap?

If this is the case those players have even more value for teams with no cap space.

I definitely think they should look into moving depth pieces. In the grand scheme of things, moving someone like Dowd won't really change their position as a lower end wild card hopeful. Get some draft capital, see how the season goes, and then work on retooling in the offseason.

That's an interesting way to say he's not on the ice and it's not because he's injured or ill or dealing with a family matter.

Centers and goalies are a hot commodity in a seller market, and we've got both to trade. Personally I haven't been too impressed with Kuemper in either season, I'd look to move him too (especially because I'm not a fan of his term), but I know the odds of trading both G's is slim to none. I think you'll find though that teams will pay out the nose for a hot G like Lindgren, and even pay steep for a pretty mediocre one like Kuemper.

Toronto, Edmonton, etc. would all be upgraded with either guy.

There was a very subtle Tom Wilson chirp at the ASG directed at Kuzy. They were doing some social media stuff and playing NHL 24 on Xbox and he asked how to scratch Kuzy from his lineup. Obviously, it was a joke at the expense of a guy who probably finds he's the butt of the jokes in the locker room all the time. But you just know if we were a Canadian city it'd be "see TW hates Kuzy too!"
