Bruins fans seem to think Smith fell off a cliff this season and is just about done. Would you put him in the top-6 as Oshie replacement?
Possibly. I think it would mostly be about the bumper position on PP1 and then fitting him in wherever else he earns.

Was reading some thought about NSH bringing him back and that makes a lot of sense.

He was day to day last time and missed a month.

He was announced as "out indefinitely" within days when he broke his foot blocking a shot in late October.

That's not day to day and has nothing to do with age or durability.

If he had core surgery (I assume hernia but maybe not) and re-injured himself this weekend it could go either way. Might be something they have to watch and wait, or might be more surgery and a month or two.

Very weird that they are calling this an upper body injuring. Earlier this year he was listed as lower body, but i didn’t realize it was a foot. I guess abdominal is upper body and groing is lower body. But this looked like muscle strain or maybe something popped in his back. On the bench he was trying to stretch something out. Regardless, didn’t look like a couple of days thing Which is a shame because this team is DEFINITELY better with Oshie than without.

Oshie is apparently just day-to-day, so hopefully he won't need replacing.
If he’s back before February I’ll be very surprised.

The plus side to Osh missing time and Wilson being out is that hopefully they’re fresh for the playoffs (if they make it). Normally we save all of our injuries for the postseason.

How can your takeaway from a "day to day" status be that he'll miss 5 to 6 weeks?

Because he pulled up lame with no contact and couldn’t take a stride to get off the ice. He has some type of groin or abdomen injury and those take a while. And because injury designations mean nothing in hockey.

Kings fan coming in peace. Kings acquired Pheonix Copley a while back. What do Caps fans think of his play? What were his strong suits as a Cap? Was he good, bad or just meh? Why did he leave the org? Just wondering because he's been called up and he's playing well. Just wanted to get your guys' views and analysis on him. Thanks!

Always a career backup. Played a couple of NHL games and was strong in the AHL And he played there on a 1-way contract. We were focused on Samsonov and Vanechek. Was an UFA this year and we have a lot of goalies in the system.

I have been surprised (happily) that he is getting games and doing well. He has grinded out his career so great to see.

He had an okay season (not exceptional) as an NHL back-up in 2018-19, but he's a pretty unremarkable goalie in general. His biggest attribute is his size. He's probably best served as part of an AHL tandem that can be called up to spot start if a different goalie gets hurt (which is exactly what he's doing for y'all now). He left the organization because the Capitals didn't offer him a contract. Heck, even his previous 3-year one-way contract was puzzling from the day it was signed. He was the back-up in 2018-19, but then (predictably) lost that role to Samsonov the following year (2019-20). In 2020-21 he was passed again, as Vanecek took the #2 role in Washington after Lundqvist's heart condition came to light. Even in Hershey he gradually lost the reigns of the net, increasingly losing time to a variety of younger, higher upside keepers who performed as well or better than he did (first Vanecek, then Fucale, then Hunter Shepard). There simply wasn't an organizational need to re-sign him after paying him NHL #2 money for 3 years for him to be the 4th goalie on our depth chart.

Didn't Craig Smith play under Laviolette? That could be a fit. He's an Oshie/Brown replacement. Almost wonder if a trade is a better route. Maybe swap eller for smith since we have plenty of centers but not enough right hand shots.

Five and a half seasons so plenty of familiarity. He's not as physical as those guys. Not as much of a PKer or defensive player. But he's somewhat crafty offensively and put up some strong underlying numbers over the years. He may not be as fast as he used to be but he's a 5-time 20-goal scorer right shot and the right shot is really the key here. He may not be a top six lock at this stage but he could be a decent PP1 bumper option minus 77/43 and allow them to maybe not rush them back. He's probably more of a 3RW depth scoring piece, which may overlap too much with a healthy Oshie but if he is to be sidelined for a while it makes a lot of sense.

$3.1M isn't great but that largely slots into Brown's space if that's enough. They'd probably rather keep Eller at the moment. It's a free asset if they have the space and also gives them a couple months head start with the player to perhaps sculpt him into a useful depth scoring piece. It's not a final piece add at all and the contract is likely too rich if Oshie's status is still unresolved but for nothing but a claim under the circumstances there's some merit to it. (Certainly I find the idea preferable to NAK on a scoring line.)

On the one hand Smith has been a very good player throughout his career up until this year:

On the other hand I see a tough time fitting him in if Oshie is expected back anytime soon.

In a vacuum I'd like to see what he could do in Oshie's spot for the time being, but I'd guess there's too many moving parts for Washington to be able to put in a claim.

If they were planning on having Brown around the entire year, then Smith could fit somewhere I'm sure if they view it that way.

It's also just a lot of players, even if injured, and a lot of salary to keep adding without moving someone else out, even outside of the cap maneuvering. Do they want to keep adding to the $90+ payroll? Smith cap hit is only $3.1 but he's making $4.3 in real dollars. Just wonder if they have the room in the real budget to pick him up

This is encouraging. Fever back on the ice as well in no-contact jersey. So soon we have a logjam at dee. Johansen goes down for free. Alexyev does not.
