should put a value of tom wilson deadline rental thread in the trade rumors. Have everyone saying hes worth nothing and then how he was a steal at the deadline.

I am under the impression that Tom Wilson is top talent in the lineup. So i very much disagree with this statement.
I guess you need to peel the onion a little…..younger, soon to be ready to break into, or break out in the NHL top talent.

It’s very possible a team under pressure to win, or who thinks he could put them over the top, would part with a choice young player or two and other assets. (Hello Toronto)…..

What will it cost to unload Mantha?

Honestly, he’s a huge negative at this point. Maybe Ottawa takes him if we add?

I'm not convinced he's worthless. He's only got a year left. Sure it's pricey, but a team with some cap space and low ambitions might easily part with a late pick to get him as a reclamation project in the offseason. If he pulls his shit together, great, an probably resign him at his same salary. If not, off he goes.

all depends on what they want to do and whether Ovi will stay. they seem to be in no mans land. before the deadline you could argue they were trying to remain competitve and continue the ovi quest. the season was lost on injuries but now they have traded away players and its clear other players are not anything close to what they used to be. I was not for a rebuild before the trade deadline but if you are going to do half of it you might as well just get it done and go scorched earth. Not sure if Ovi had told them he'll go home if they do that but I would have shopped everyone. Wilson, Oshie, Kuzy and Carlson will never be more valuable then right now. Love what Wilson did in the cup run. There really is no point in resigning Willie anyway. The team will be horrible for the next 5 years. Cant see why he would want to stick around for that anyway.
They are not rebuilding. They never said they were. They are retooling with the aim of staying in playoff contention and helping Ovie reach 895. And it's a process. Step 1 was getting assets for UFAs who were not or could not be resigned. Step 2 will be drafting and trading. Step 3 UFA. And so on. Whether it works remains to be seen.

But they had a half dozen or more player contracts ending this year along with the HC. This was always slated as a make or break season. I actually think Mac even said as much last offseason though I can't find the quote.

Only if you're ignoring people who already said as much.
And if you ignore that while maybe still better than 2023, they also were crap for 2/3 of the 2022 portion of the season.

Between him and Nicky, that’s a lot of cap space tied up in guys who are not near 100%. It’s going to be tough for BMac to keep both of them and get them back to where they want to be.

He's just heart and soul. Impossible not to love him. Also kinda wish he'd retire before he's irreparably broken and can't enjoy the rest of his life.

Detroit got a 7th for a Vrana, and look what the scenery change did for him. Mantha backers will take notice.

I don’t think he’s a negative asset. Obv not a lot of positives…… but not a negative either.

Vrana lights the way (oddly enough)

Detroit retained half, though. Caps either may need to do similar or take back a contract. Which is why a buyout isn't so terrible depending on the market. They'd save over $4M next season...but then be tagged over $2M the following one. It may beat having to pay up assets to get rid of him at least.

I'd guess it will be a very short list of teams that may consider him a positive asset at this stage, even if there's just the one season remaining. Part of the problem may be Washington needing to get him off of their cap earlier on in the off-season when he may only become appealing later in the off-season (unless maybe there's a contract swap fit).

It's impossible to watch him play hockey at this point.

We can guess.....wrong system, confidence, bad coaching. But I've been watching the NHL longer than most of you, and I don't think I've ever seen a 28 year-old, 2-time 24 goal scorer, 6'5" and 234 lbs, supposedly not injured, player do less on the ice than this dude. I just don't understand what is going on.

He's not SC caliber. He might rebound and score 20 again, but his compete level is zero. If he ever wins a SC it will be due to luck and on the backs of other players.

I wanted us to get Vrana back when he was for free on waivers and we had cap space. I guess he pissed people off enough here that it was shut down and we kept Craig Smith.

Agree with what your saying about what management "has said" they would like to do. Sometimes that doesnt matter. All of their top players are on the wrong side of the career. Love all of them but Wilson has his issues. Backstrom should retire. Oshie can't play more then half a season. Kuzy is uncoachable. Carlson getting slower although we saw how bad it is without him. Imo they are closer to us watching the slow death over the next 2 seasons then seeing them retool and compete

2 goals in how many playoff games with the caps. He's a perimeter soft player. 1 breakaway goal in the finals and 1 empty netter from ovi. Anyone within 4 ft of him in the playoffs and he is neutralized

Oh without a doubt he would fetch a good amount of talent. If we are talking strictly healthy future this trade makes sense. If we are talking right now then i think its best to keep Wilson because they wont be able to replace what he brings.

Make it stop.

"Entering critical weekend".

Sure, you could call it that. Moneypuck has our Playoffs odds already at 0.0 %.

Part of me feels these injury news are only coming up now because these guys have been playing with injuries for weeks and they've finally given up entirely.

But this is a critical weekend indeed. Our Bedard odds are already up at 3.7 % and our only game is early one against the surging Rangers. Should be an easy road ahead for the red tank.

This is literally 1998-99 all over again. An aging team with significant injuries to key players. If I recall correctly the team then fired the team's sports medic. They then went on to a couple more playoff appearances and of course first round exits before 2004.

Truth, but who knows what the trade and his personal issues have done to change him to another level and person. Right now he's showing to be motivated, but he's certainly one dimensional. He was really young with the Caps too, so maturity can factor in also.
