Didn't TvR play all the way up with Carlson this year? Fine with a guy who can be almost anywhere in the lineup getting paid a bit for that

TvR has definitely earned his contract. Solid guy with consistently good but not great performances. But, 3 mil seems like a bit much. But im ok with it, appreciate low event players like him in the d-core.

Well, Sandin-Jensen is the analytic dream team second pairing, right? Maybe TVR could be our new Kempny, and play alongside Carlson? Or just play on the third pairing until somebody inevitably gets hurt.

TVR's the ultimate Swiss-Army-Knife defenseman. He can provide safe, reliable play on any of the three pairings AND on either side. $3mx3 isn't a sweetheart deal, but it's still a good extension.

A Swiss-Army Knife is a good way to describe him. $3M is fair value for him. He can play either side and up and down the lineup. He’s also solid on the penalty kill. Maybe half a million more than I’d like to see on AAV but you’re grasping at straws to find something to complain about at that point. You’re almost certainly going to have to pay more than $3M if you want someone as good as TvR on the open market.

This is also a contract that’s very easy to trade in a year or two that will return actual value if Iorio is ready.

for all the issues the Caps will have next season, now with TVR's signing, D isn't nearly as pressing as 24 hours ago:

- a decent (at worst) 5 of 6 D without any offseason moves
Sandin-Carlson
Fever-Jensen
? - TVR

- and a very solid Goalie tandem

- if Caps can get a Top-6 scoring winger this summer, team has potential to be right back in the mix

- on D, granted the slotting isn't ideal, but arguably Carlson + Jensen are 1RD's and TVR is a 2RD, while Sandin is looking like a solid 2LD and Fever tweenering between 2LD/3LD (closer to 2LD)

[dreaming]if only Orlov could be resigned[/dreaming]
Orlov - Jensen
Sandin - Carlson
Fever - TVR
Alexeyev

Why does Oshie have to be sacrificed to get Dunn? Why replace Oshie with Brown? No sense in replacing old with old and Oshie means a lot more to this team.
Well Dunn is only 26… that is not old. And he has been relatively healthy and put up 50 points. But we can’t sign a guy like Dunn without freeing up Cap space.

And don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to run Oshie out of town. I love him. But reality is JC74, OV, and Backstrom aren’t going anywhere. Neither is Wilson. Oshie and Mantha are next most expensive guys. I feel like we need to do something different with the forwards.

The TVR signing is big. I was hoping for 2.5 x 2. 3x3 is still economical and great for both sides. Iorio still has a year or two but should be considered a good call-up next couple of years while waiver exempt. Chelsey will likely play at MN again next year and then he is in the mix as well in 2-3 years as Jensen and TVR Expire. Question is do we go with AA as 3LD or find another top 4 or value dee? Not impossible to imagine bringing Gus back to pair with JC74 next year on a value contract but suspect it was have to be 2 years.

Ovechkin - Strome - Wilson
Milano - Kuznetsov - guy making $5.5M or less
Mantha - Backstrom - Oshie
Protas - Dowd - NAK
Fehervary - Carlson
Sandin - Jensen
Alexeyev - TVR
next year if they don’t do something with Mantha or Kuzy

Think it's kind of a ridiculous justification. Brown is a good enough tweener to probably get past 40 points this year had he been healthy, but your justification would be like saying Wilson wouldn't have hit 40 or 50 this year because everyone else was bad.

Magically, having a more talented player playing would probably have led to them having a few more points.

Also, it will never not blow my mind that Irwin is set to play his 50th game for us this season. Just absolute insanity.
Brown has hit 40 points *once* in his career, and he was playing 20 minutes/night when he did so. He's not a surefire bet for 40 points, healthy or not.

Can't wait to see what dumpster dive they pair with TVR next year. I'm betting on Gostisbehere. McMichael plugged in as 2nd line winger and let's run it back again boys!

TvR is absolutely worth $3M on the open market. The only question is if the Capitals can get $3M worth of mileage out of him with Carlson and Jensen already on the right side. I'm still quite content with the deal, but they're going to be creative to free up money to invest in the forward corps.

I've been barking up this tree for a while, but with Jensen and TvR both extended plus Sandin showing off his offensive chops - it's once again time to revisit the concept of trading Carlson.

Frees up cash for reinvestment elsewhere, hopefully returns significant value (albeit dramatically less than it would have a year or two ago), and finally provides the core shake-up message that so many of us have been waiting for.

I'm not opposed, but it seems like an in-season (next season) move rather than this offseason given that no one knows if he's gonna be any good after this crazy injury. On the other hand, if he bounces back well... maybe he's a keeper. All TBD.

3x his current salary and takes him to 34 yrs old.

Still probably a good deal based on performance and the market.

This makes Jensen, Carlson, and TVR all UFA following the 2025-26 season. Sandin will be RFA after next year so you can bet they'll give him a 2yr deal to once again explode the defense at the same time.

AA and Fever are probably looking at team-friendly RFA deals of 3yrs to coincide with that, I'd guess.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Sandin get a Willy type deal. 5 X 4 given his age, potential, and performance. Hell, maybe you offer him 7 x 3 and see if he bites--he's not even 30 at the end of that.
