Ones that score 40-50 we don't. Might be our team causing that but still.
Do you think Connor Brown scores 40-50 points on the 2022-23 Capitals? This team has three players who are above 40 points currently - Ovechkin with 61P in 61GP, Kuznetsov with 50P in 65GP, and Strome with 45P in 65GP.

Is Brown better offensively than, say, Conor Sheary? Yeah, I think most of us would agree on that.

But I don't think adding a Connor Brown helps this team's offense much overall. They need more guys who drive lines.

Why not? He was a very good second line winger in Ottawa who was a tenacious forechecker and really good on the PK. He doesn’t add a lot of skill per se but if he was a cheap middle six RW they could focus on upgrading 2LW and maybe swapping out Kuznetsov.

Plug in McMichael and Snivley and you got your 2023 caps! That's BMacs secret weapon...McMichael can play wing in the top six!

I mean he did it at that pace for three years on Sens roster that were outperformed by the previous three years of Cap rosters.

But sure, returning from an ACL, getting older etc doesn't help.

But in all honesty, what do we have to lose? I'd rather have Brown than Mantha.

Brown also played 20 minutes a night for those Sens teams which really inflated those point totals. No way he’s getting close to that in DC.

His career high is 43 points, he's only passed 40 once, and he's never hit 50. You can talk about pace, but he both never actually hit those numbers and was also getting 18-20 minutes/night for the past 3 years in Ottawa, which he would not get in Washington (he had 16:46/night before his injury).

id rather have someone better and maybe even younger than both, personally.

I would only sign Brown if we can move Oshie. A move I have thought about a bit. I have always felt he was a bit untouchable… a great leader of men, locker room Guy, solid playoff performer. he is loved in that room. But we have leadership from OV, Wilson, Dowd in particular. We have other culture carriers that will still be on the roster.

Would Oshie be willing to move on to Seattle is the question. Probably a team he would go to and have a bit of a legacy Given his roots there. Raise a family. We would fetch good value in that trade. Could be a feel good move for both sides if Oshie was into it.

Vince Dunn coming back would be amazing. Not sure Seattle will be able to afford Him. We my have to send Alexyev as well to give them a young cost controlled dee. But we’d get a 26 year old LD who puts up points and is +17 this year. That may be a pipe dream, but Seattle also has 3 2nd round picks.

Oshie is probably retiring here. He means a lot to the team, and honestly still contributes.

Brown may be available as a PTO player. I’d rather play the guys in the AHL. If they can’t earn a spot, we can find available guys, like we did with Milano and NAK.

Why does Oshie have to be sacrificed to get Dunn? Why replace Oshie with Brown? No sense in replacing old with old and Oshie means a lot more to this team.

Think it's kind of a ridiculous justification. Brown is a good enough tweener to probably get past 40 points this year had he been healthy, but your justification would be like saying Wilson wouldn't have hit 40 or 50 this year because everyone else was bad.

Magically, having a more talented player playing would probably have led to them having a few more points.

Also, it will never not blow my mind that Irwin is set to play his 50th game for us this season. Just absolute insanity.

There's no reason to think Tom Wilson wouldn't have reached 50 points again this year if he had played a full season.

Even if they let Brown go, do they really have cap room to replace him with a winger who can drive a line? Assuming they can trade Mantha without salary coming back, they'd enter the offseason with just under 16.1M (edit: 13.1M) in cap space and this as their framework:

Ovi-Strome-Wilson
xx-Kuz-xx
Milano-Backstrom-Oshie
Protas-Dowd-NAK

xx-Carlson
Sandin-Jensen
xx-TVR

Kuemper
Lindgren

New deals for Fever and AA probably fill out the left side of the defense for at least 3M total, and TVR or a TVR replacement probably takes at least another 2M, maybe more (edit: definitely more - make that 3M). So assuming bare-bones spending on the D, they've got 11M (edit: 10M) for two top 6 wings. That's not enough to bring in two high-end forwards unless they both come through trades for younger guys, which would gut the Caps' prospect depth. Brown on a cheap 1 year deal at least has a decent chance to outperform his contract and opens up room for additions elsewhere.

The effects of knee injuries can linger long past when a player is cleared to play. Brown may not be 100% until deep into the 2023-2024 campaign.

I guess $3m for TVR is OK. I'm not his biggest fan.

Great deal. Right side of the D is set for a few years and TvR can move to the left side when Iorio is ready in a year or two.

3x his current salary and takes him to 34 yrs old.

Still probably a good deal based on performance and the market.

This makes Jensen, Carlson, and TVR all UFA following the 2025-26 season. Sandin will be RFA after next year so you can bet they'll give him a 2yr deal to once again explode the defense at the same time.

AA and Fever are probably looking at team-friendly RFA deals of 3yrs to coincide with that, I'd guess.

I quite like the TVR signing. With Sandin’s deal in place for another year and Fever & Alexeyev presumably not coming in too high, it should be a relatively modest spend on a fairly mobile blue line. Especially if a guy like Carlsson is their number 7.

Finding a guy who is, or can quickly become, a legit 2RW has to be the priority now. Ideally a guy like Snively or CMM will be ready for 3LW, at least to start the season, and Backstrom, Wilson and Carlson will all have had time to get back into max conditioning. A long offseason might not be the worst thing in the world for the Veterans, either.

More than I expected for TvR but it's still okay. Is Jensen really only a 4m defender if TvR is a 3m defender? Weird but whatever.

I’d consider moving TVR to the left side to play in the top 4 next year. He’s shown he’s more than capable of a top 4 role, though I’d like to see him reproduce it on the left.
