Almost got excited, until I saw "non-Covid illness." At this point, if they were keeping him out for trade-related reasons, they'd just say something to that effect.

We had one of our local bloggers say we were connected to Jensen. Just curious as to your guys thoughts on him, decent partner as a stablizer for Power on the 2nd pairing so we would push Jokiharju down? Or is he more a 3rd pairing guy?

Price?

I think Buffalo is the absolute best spot for Jensen to land. He’s a fantastic defensive player and should easily slot in anywhere in Buffalo’s top 4. He’s much more than a bottom pairing defenseman.

They would do well to get him for the likely asking price of like a second and third round pick or similar. With Orlov only essentially getting a first and a third I would think Jensen would go for less.

Highly mobile defensive D with good skating. Good second pairing guy. I think the consensus here is a first rounder but he can probably be had for a second rounder given our situation.

No MOJO! So much for PP entries. Over under how many times Kuzy coughs up the puck trying to enter offensive zone on a PP today. I'll go with 4 turnovers.
Attended the Panthers and Red Wings games over the last week or so (lucky me, eh?), and you could basically summarize the PP entries as follows MoJo (Good), Nicky (Bad), Kuzy (Ugly).

Most of Kuzy's entries could be sub-classified as follows:
(i) entry fail;
(ii) enter get steered into a spot along the boards and cough up the puck;
(iii) enter, be permitted a shooting lane, scoff at the shooting lane for a passing lane that doesn't exist, continue to hold onto the puck until surrounded by opponents and devoid of options, get dispossessed.

TXPD used to say Kuzy is an artist, and like many artists, needs creatives around him, and has to granted liberties that others don't get. I think that was largely correct and I also think Kuzy was probably a more responsible player when Ovi and Nick were younger and playing at the highest level, and guys like Orpik, Niskanen and Justin Williams were on the team - and he maybe felt like he had something to prove.

But in a year in which we've really needed him to make the team and others around him better, he just seems to be doing the opposite. A change of scenery would really be good for everybody.

Someone could beat that package, and it'd still be a massive mistake. Make yourself immensely weaker for a guy who's on a heater.

I just do not get the EK love. It's like the previous 4 or 5 years just didn't happen. That's even ignoring he costs 11.5 million dollars. It feels like the ultimate shiny toy syndrome.
This so very much.

So……2 games left….before deadline….

1pm tomorrow @ Buffalo
10pm Wed @ Anaheim

Does GMBM go next level and immediately retool with a few deals bringing bodies in now, but still acquiring assets to deal a few more UFAs?

I guess I’m trying to see what makes Chychrun so special that makes him the guy that Washington should spend all of their trade ammo on.

He’s good defensively and has a good shot, but he isn’t really a good puck mover and isn’t a particularly good playmaker from the blue line. I think he can be a good shutdown defenseman and probably a good #2 defenseman on a contender, but he’s not the guy a team that struggles to score should really be keying in on as their centerpiece when looking to reshape the roster.

2 of Eller/Mojo/Sheary should be gone regardless. Get Protas and Snively in the lineup. I hope they re-sign Jensen/TvR.

Tarik wrote after the trade yesterday he feels like GMBM is just getting started. I think if he could get a guy like Chychrun for Boston’s first plus CMM he’ll do it. Tarik also wrote the quote below today when they made a bold prediction for each NHL team. The next few days will be interesting.

Washington Capitals

They part with a prized prospect: You could say the Caps already made a bold move by dealing veterans Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway to Boston an hour before a “must win” game over the last-place Ducks, which they lost 4-2. But my sense is that general manager Brian MacLellan is just getting started. To me, the next potential bold move might involve parting with former first-rounders Connor McMichael and/or Hendrix Lapierre, the Nos. 2 and 3 prospects in Washington’s pool, per colleague Scott Wheeler. Yes, the Caps are trying to get younger. But they’re also trying to kickstart an aggressive roster retool, which means adding NHL-proven players to the Alex Ovechkin-led roster — not those who still require on-the-job training. — Tarik El-Bashir

Aside from his on-ice performance, he’s 24 and has a really attractive cap hit for two more seasons after this. The cost certainty has to be attractive to most teams but especially a team like Washington looking to retool and compete for the duration of Ovechkin’s contract.

I get that he is going to provide good overall value with his cap hit. But if they are going to do this retool I don’t think getting good value on a top defensive defenseman is enough. I mean they just did that with Nick Jensen for 4 years and it’s been nowhere near enough to get them competitive.

Why assume they stop there? There’s significant change in motion….

Makes sense to shop the Boston pick but clearly Chyrchrun will cost more. Hopefully it's not a scenario where A.) they feel obligated to move it now for the best they can swing to have something tangible to show the fanbase and B.) if it's Chychrun that they don't get hustled due to that intent. Not a bad idea to keep it in the pocket if the right deal isn't there. You never know what sort of turnover may result at the draft (and it could also be decent ammo to move up further for an impact forward).

I’m trying to figure out what they’d have left to trade with. Assuming Chychrun only costs Boston’s first round pick this year and McMichael/Lapierre, that leaves them with very little else of value to get another center, for instance.

I’d much rather they try to address a defensive D in the UFA market and use their assets of value trying to reshape their top 6. Or go after Karlsson whose offensive ability from the blueline is second to none.

Another goal-scorer seems like a more likely target than a center, particularly after extending Strome. They'd need to move one out or swap one. Assuming Meier goes elsewhere--NJD seems to be the favorite--I'm not sure who else fits. Konecny (currently hurt)? Would FLA move Reinhart? Both are older than Chychrun and it seems likely any target will be on the younger side. Quality young players available for a first rounder plus probably won't be a very long list. Factor in Chychrun's contract and, yeah, not hard to figure why he's a primary target.

Their only other move beyond one bigger add and depth signings may be shipping out Mantha for some team's change of scenery player. They may instead just sort of put it on the core again to define where the season goes. The challenge from a floor standpoint seems to be managing to put together a good enough blueline given cap constraints. Not hard to figure why then they're looking to extend Gustafsson given his production (and perhaps others). Maybe they're open to more changes but it's not yet evident beyond Eller and maybe a few other pieces at the deadline.

Aggressive re-tool you say.

Kuzy, Jensen and Alexeyev
For
Newhook, Girardi and 1st

Reasoning:
Avs need to upgrade their 2C, Newhook isn’t ready for that yet. Girardi is costing the Avs 5M to play on the 3rd pair. Jensen cover for EJ’s broken foot.

Oshie, Fehervary, CMM, Avs 1st, Bos 1st + 2nd + 3rd
For
Chychrun and Schmaltz

Reasoning:
Fehervary, Avs 1st + Bos 3rd For Chychrun

Oshie, CMM, Bos 1st, Bos 2nd For Schmaltz

Schmaltz NTC kicks in next season and his contract will be more expensive than his caphit while Oshie’s the opposite and that ownership seems very interested in saving dollars. Oshie’s leadership would be valuable in the desert. He’s a fine player on a not as fine contract, to most teams. Not to the Yotes though. They’re probably on his 10-team list though..
But 2 1st’s and a 2nd is a good haul for Schmaltz.

So basically:
Orlov (UFA), Hathaway (UFA), Oshie, Jensen (UFA), McMichael, Fehervary & Alexeyev

For

Chychrun (2x4,6M), Girardi (3x5M), Schmaltz (3x5,85M) , Newhook (RFA)

I think the team is going to have to move on from Oshie sooner rather than later, but shipping him to the desert seems particularly heartless.

They really did miss a golden opportunity for a storybook Oshie move with the Seattle expansion.

After today's game, I would have to think BMAC is fielding some calls related to Oshie from teams that have no playoff experience or have not been there for sometime, i.e. Seattle, Buffalo, Detroit. He's the perfect warrior to go in to battle with. Great locker room guy that plays the game the right way, great mentor to young players.

As far as a Kuzy change of scenery (which @marcel snapshot suggested): not wanting to hang too much on the injury excuse, but if you put Kuz with good linemates (e.g., Ovie & Wilson), maybe he's re-energized for more than one game every 8 or 10. I do wonder how much Kuzy's give a shit quotient derives from who he's playing with.

Maybe seeing Orlov gone shakes Kuzy up a bit. Who da fug knows. Guy needs to play free and if you put do and don’t constraints in his head he freezes up or goes into a shell. He’s like a golfer to whom you can’t give any mechanical instruction cuz it only f***s up all the good things he does naturally. I’m sure Lavi loves coaching him
