Let’s also talk about Sheary. Guy is doing everything for the team, can play on any line, and is arguably their most consistent player (albeit only 6 games in).

He’s been a total stud

Yep. Never liked Lavi putting him with the 4th line to start the season. Guy offers much more than that.

Again I don’t disagree that they need to bank points and survive until Thanksgiving but what good is McMichael doing to get them points sitting in the press box?

If they’re not going to play him because they think other guys give them the best shot at getting point now then that’s their prerogative but then let McMike play actual hockey in Hershey.
I wish I had that answer…..it’s something only Lavi/GMBM can answer…

Yup….pays off to be able to play well in any line…

he's literally a four line player, extremely useful.

I think it’s about chemistry — for everyone else. Find it and then know you can add Sheary anywhere.

They always talk about finding “pairs” of forwards w chemistry and then adding a “compliment”. Seems Sheary is the quote a “compliment”.

He will slow down, obv. But he’s a good player. His next contract is vexing to me. Swiss Army knife players are huge. What’s he worth?

3m a year? That’s probably the breaking point?

There were reports that they tried to re-sign Sheary last year and he balked at the offer. Not sure he’ll get done but I imagine he’s one of many players they’re waiting on to see how this year goes.

As a Caps fan, going 4-1 after the 0-2 start is awesome, even if the NJ game was the only "solid" 60 min effort

The "hated" players are all doing pretty good, isn't it interesting that
a HEALTHY Eller is doing well,
a healthy Marge is doing well and producing, a healthy Martha is producing and helping the 3rd line look formidable, the hated Gustafsson has been good, and even JC74IQ has looked better after some weak starts

The vaunted xMcMic will get his xchances soon enough, he can still play 70+ games ;)

I'm still trying to figure out, who is "Marge"?

I’ll give you that many of those players have looked good at times but hell no to John Carlson. The dude has been a disaster in his own zone.

“Opponents are going on shooting sprees during John Carlson’s shifts– higher than any team-level opponent rate in shot attempts, without much offense to offset it.”

It’s early still but Fehervary seems to have picked up where he left off last year, which isn’t a good thing. Both Jensen and Carlson have been much better away from Fehervary than with him. A lot of that is probably due to Orlov being so strong, but still Fehervary being sub-40% xGF% so far isn’t encouraging.

I’m more interested in seeing the WAR data when it’s released (usually around 20 games in IIRC) since it controls for context much better than adjusted on-ice stats, but I imagine at this rate the WAR stats won’t be pretty either.

Upgrading LD is probably the easiest and most impactful move they can realistically make since 1Cs are rarely available. But even if they decide Chychrun is too expensive, getting the next Kulak/Kempny/Jensen is still likely to be a huge upgrade and those types of guys are cheap.

They might as well pull the trigger on a Chychrun deal when the time comes. Clearly they're not overly concerned putting in the work to effectively multi-task to invest in growth. The standard for any softer young player is sky high...and even a more exceptionally cerebral skilled sort would struggle playing an excessively scrambled style.

If they extend Lavi they should stick to drafting bigger dudes more readily capable of playing a power game. Or else they might as well throw the picks away. If this is their lane then may as well double down on it instead of hedging or trying to be something they're not.
I'm not sure they will, given the price.

What's your take on it? Would you trade Fehervary in that deal? What would you add with him to get Chychrun? How much do you weigh his injury history in it?

maybe I'm stupid for watching some of the games but I really have a hard time backing that up. guy hasn't been excellent but he's been good.

At least you're not as stupid as the people I see at the games who spend most of the time staring at their phones. They are the very definition of stupid!

I'm guessing they'll hold off until the deadline when maybe they'll know more about Strome, CMM/MF, 19 and that chunk of space. But if they could, say, only move McMichael & Fehervary and not include a high pick maybe that's deemed reasonable enough. Hard to believe another team would top that. I don't know. I don't know how aggressive they may want to be. The injury history has to negatively impact his value but just how much and how much of a hurry ARI is in to complete a deal could provide an opportunity for someone. You'd think ARI may need to play him first to overcome some hesitation and up his value but if they want to move on that time pressure could play in the hands of an acquiring team.

I agree on that time-line. It's hard to believe any team would be eager to acquire Chychrun before he comes back as he had not just one significant injury but two very recently. Bone spurs removed from his ankle earlier this summer and then wrist surgery later on. On top of that he had significant knee injury earlier in his career and he has never played a full season. 47 games last season, 56 the year before, 63 before that, then 53 and 50. In terms of durability that's not really a guy you can rely on for full season, but at the top of his game he's an excellent D.

I would be pretty hesitant to acquire him. Depends who is the next best LD available and what's the cost to acquire him. Bill Armstrong has really strong trade history and is known for fleecing other GM's and given the assets Coyotes have, he's not going to sell low on Chychrun. If the price would be just Fehervary & McMichael and neither of them don't break out this season, i would propably be willing to pay that price. Especially if we are set on moving forward with Laviolette (seems likely with extension rumours). Chychrun is a major upgrade on Fehervary and trade value wise i don't think McMichael has that much value around the league anymore, and he struggles to win Laviolette's trust. Is that enough for Coyotes? I don't think so.

It depends on offers otherwise. That's more of a time pressure offer but it depends on what ARI's objectives are. CMM/MF would offer readymade ability to step into the lineup with some pace and upside remaining and maybe help build more buzz around the team. Is that the main objective rather than futures and loading up for next year's draft? Is this a main piece they must max out on? If so, again, you'd think they'd be patient, welcome him back to the lineup and hope for the best at the deadline. But if they either don't want to run the risk of him getting hurt again or generally want to move on that has impact return value. Some teams could beat that offer but likely need to throw in further salary to make it work (and raise the price for taking it on). Being able to at least theoretically take on that AAV clean could be a real advantage.

Aside from Gostisbehere there are mostly more limited types that are at best sturdier upgrades over Gustafsson. Provorov likely doesn't fit structurally so it's a limited field. A more durable fluid two-way center like Horvat would be ideal but short of that I'd think a legit top four LD is the most sensible secondary target.

That’s my concern….he’s rarely healthy. I’m not super keen on his addition because of that.

On the other hand he is on a good deal for 3 more years of his prime and fills a position of need. He's stout defensively and good in transition. And perhaps his current injury situation and his desire to leave Arizona could be a buy-low opportunity if he does get healthy.

I'm not sure he'd be my #1 target right now, but he would be a big help. Like I said earlier there are always good top 4 D available at the TDL for cheap. Are guys like Kulak and Jensen really that big of a step down from Chychrun that it'd be worth utilizing McMichael and/or Fehervary as trade chips instead of say a second round pick? Maybe not, especially if a good center does become available and those chips are better utilized there.

I think it's important that they find a guy who can pair well with Carlson, even if the guy isn't flashy or spectacular. Kempny was that guy, and perhaps another under-the-radar guy becomes available.

They've given Fehervary a ton of opportunity to crack the top 4 but thus far the results haven't been there. They should probably give him a few more months to prove himself but at some point you can't wait for improvement, especially given the age of their core.

i dunno, i watch fehervary and once you get past the fact that he's a nice skater and moves well, i don't really think he's a great defender at all. He seems better at defending a rush than disrupting a cycle, but otherwise not too impressed with him. He's solid enough guy to have back there especially on an ELC. I worry about what extension they give him.

He's gotten all this praise, the coaches seem to love him, there's this general agreement that he's good...so i imagine he skips the bridge deal and they extend long term and that's a little worrisome for me.

I wonder if Backstrom still remains an option in Managements mind. It would make the acquiring a 2C vs 2LD decision easier.

The likes of Graves, Gavrikov or Soucy could in theory be a complementary types partners for Carlson. But I'm skeptical more of a value play is enough these days. Even if they stick with Orlov/Carlson and want a more reliable partner for Jensen I'm skeptical it's enough. They'd need to do significantly more up front that profiles to be playoff style drivers and, again, that's most likely a short list.

Washington had interest in RD Ethan Bear around the draft. He seems likely to move soon.
