Moments happen “in real time”. We’d all like to think we’d make good decisions all along the way. Even now, at 55, shit happens. And for the record I don't necessarily think that contract termination should be automatic. The team should (and I assume will) do some due diligence on the player and his maturity and professional behavior to determine if he is 'worth' the risk. Like it or not, I often don't, but risk basis is a core part of any analysis of alternatives.
I certainly made stupid decisions in the 90s, and some of those continue to haunt me to this day, both personally and professionally. But at the time I wasn't on an inside track to becoming one of the best ~1000 people in the world at a particular high visibility thing like a professional sport. That should demand a higher standard of conduct. Its also probably worth pointing out that public perception and thus expectation of some behavior has changed a lot in the past 25+ years.
But to be blunt - it's a very short leap from what he did to killing two brothers that are bicycling on the side of the road. Pure dumb luck is part of it.
From the management perspective, in similar situations I've spoken not only with the individual who made a transgression and those who spend time with them, but also those who don't like them and don't get along. Their opinion on someone's character should be part of the analysis.
At 18-19 or whatever? All while having people praise you, pretty much every step of the way? How does that world look? What does that do you to as a young person? Boundaries etc? Do you know? I sure do not.
I fully agree w the character piece. The Knights traded for him, so would assume they did SOME homework on the lad.
Look, we’ve got some guys that systematically bullied/tortured a challenged youth. We’ve got guys that posted horrible crap on the internet. They are still playing in their respective systems.
None of it is “ok” or “fine”.
But he’s a kid. Period end. Regardless of circumstance. Let’s see how this plays out before you play Judge Dredd on him?
