Turns out he's 5th in OHL scoring right behind Pro. I'm going to be surprised if he isn't signed by the club in the offseason with that level of production.

Yikes, I'm not up on Canadian charges but if I'm reading that right he was drunk, got in a wreck and fled the scene? Gotta think they release him or are strongly considering it.

We don’t know all the details. But yes drunk driving needs to be addressed harshly. Contract termination might be too much.

I'm not sure there is much precedent for terminating an NHL contract based "only" on drunk driving. Galchenyuk is the most recent one I can think of, and he had also reportedly threatened the police officer(s) involved which added a whole nuther ton of bricks.

That said, I suppose if they needed to they could just buy him out cheaply. $220K cap hit for two seasons, then $133K for two.

Regrettably though, I suspect Dr John is right, as far as the eventual disposition being dependent on how they see him as a prospect.

So the Blue Jackets had a prospect with a DUI last year and his contract wasn't terminated. This appears to be a shade more serious, but my guess is they don't terminate. I suspect they'll be talking a lot with the Hunters.

Now, whether or not they should terminate is a different question. I'm too mad at him right now to rationally evaluate that.

I tend to agree. He made a mistake and there's likely to be plenty of serious consequences already. But the clamor to see it ruin his future seems extreme.

From drunk driving with passengers in the car? You shouldn’t have to “learn” that isn’t okay to do. He’s lucky there weren’t serious injuries or worse.

I’m all for consequences, but it doesn’t do any good if there isn’t a path to improvement. He will I’m sure have repercussions, but it shouldn’t end his career at this age

To be clear when I say that'll probably do it for him I mean in terms of personally having any expectations for him as a prospect. The big task ahead for him was refining decision-making. If there's doubt as to professionalism and trustworthiness it only becomes a longer, narrower path. To be sure many players are no angels but this isn't an exceptional talent. There's supporting him and learning from it but immaturity these days isn't an excuse. And investing in a player should come with expectations as to personal conduct.

Regardless of consequences I wouldn't expect this player to become a Hershey mainstay for a while (if ever). And that's just the first big step. Termination or a buy out may not happen but a return to the OHL as an overager or starting in the ECHL seems way more likely if retained. The big knock on the guy already was the head on his shoulders...
