The Capitals have a TON of defensemen now. I mean, they already did, but even more now. The issue is how many of them are actually capable of playing big minutes and key situations this season?

Defensemen who are clearly Top 4 D on basically any team in the league:
Carlson
Orlov

Aging legend:
Chara

Defensemen who are maybe Top 4 D in the right situation, but have also had significant stretches of their career they look better on bottom pairing roles:
Dillon
Jensen
Schultz

Young defensemen with promise:
Fehervary
Siegenthaler

High value guys that could steal spots:
TvR
LaDue

It's gonna come down to finding the right chemistry and pairings, but they certainly have a lot of options to work with. The Capitals "fourth and fifth" pairings are probably the best in the league, but that doesn't exactly pay dividends. Gonna be interesting to see if there's enough there to fill out the top two pairings with players that won't be outmatched against opposing top lines.

Schultz better have a freakin career year this year. With the young guys most likely sidelined (probably) and Kempny LTIRed and Jensen likely gone, Schultz is one of our few D that is remotely mobile on skates.

What does this mean for Anderson now? I know he's only on a PTO but if he impresses I'm not sure they even have the cap space to sign him now

Why would the Caps keep more than 2 goalies on the roster? Anderson/Vanecek will be on the taxi squad.

I think carrying 8D is the move, with Fehervary and maybe LaDue on the taxi squad. No need to ship people out with a shortened season and COVID, keep everyone

They can't carry a third absent waiving Sprong and not carrying an extra forward or clearing out some cap room via trade. Putting Vanecek on the taxi squad requires him hitting waivers and I doubt that happens. Anderson comes in to compete and presumably is at least open to the idea of the taxi squad but we'll see.

Waiving Sprong is a possibility but it's pretty helpful to have a scoring-line type talent available as an extra given how thin the system is otherwise.

Wasn't sure how the taxi squad worked with the salary cap so I wasn't sure if they could keep both
Anderson would sign for $750 most likely, if he makes the team great, if not anything under $1.075 mil can be buried so no cap issues would arise.

13F w/ both Sheary and Sprong, 8D, and Vanecek with Lundqvist/Kempny to LTIR leaves like $3k of cap room. That should be the roster. One of the forwards could be swapped out say for Pinho or Carr but yea that’s it. $795 was just the amount they could do it seems to also have Vanecek or Anderson at $700.

BMac wasn't kidding when he said he thought the culture was slipping. In addition to being first-ballot HOFers, Chara and Lundqvist are widely known and respected for their competitiveness, preparation, and professionalism. I know Lundqvist can't play but it's clear that Mac wanted more character guys in the dressing room.

I think we missed Beagle and Orpik a whole lot.

Something to look forward to:

The softer teams in our division (not NYI or the Flyers) will get bullied 8 times this season plus the playoffs. No one will want to play a team with Wilson, Chara, Ovechkin and Dillon that many times.
