I'd put Chara next to Orlov. Chara would keep Orlov accountable. I found that Orlov has always done better with a leader type next to him (Orpik. Nisky)

In few years the Caps lineup would look like this

Ovi Gretzky Kurri
Bure Messier StLouis

Lidstrom Niedermayer
Chara Pronger

Brodeur
Hasek

Ha. Funny thing is 2 of those players almost happened. Messier in 1997, Pronger in 09.

Also funny thing is Chara could have happened in 06

Imagine if Hank was able to play this year?2 legends of others NHL teams on the ice rocking the red.

But on the other side I think if Lundqvist Is able to play, we don't sign Chara

So...are they going to carry eight defensemen on the active roster? Does Siegenthaler get moved? Jensen?

Orpik presence, workout freak, but also, the Caps sure do love signing elder statesmen to bring in their more valued prospects and they managed to do it again with Chara around to show Fehervary what an NHL routine looks like.

Checks a lot of those off-ice boxes in one big ass package.

A fellow Slovakian for Fehervary as well.

Huh? Orlov and Orpik never played much together. Orlov spent basically Orpik's entire tenure in DC on the left side. Orpik's primary partners in DC were Carlson (2016-17), Shattenkirk (2017), Djoos (2018), and the rotating cast at 3RD in 2019 (Bowey, Djoos, Siegenthaler, Jensen).

So is Jensen the odd man out now?
Doubtful. Chara and Siegenthaler together would be a pairing primed to get stuck in their own zone, just like Orpik and Siegenthaler was. Zdeno ain't the puck mover he once was. Chara fills the same role that Siege does as the stay-at-home guy and PK specialist on the 3rd pairing, and lets Jensen handle the breakout duty.

They'll just let it play out but the potential for a trade is there, esp. if TVR and some of their depth options inspire confidence.

I'd probably roll with this:

Dillon - Carlson
Orlov - TVR
Chara - Schultz

Or Jensen over TVR. Whoever is better but Jensen's PKing strength may not be as essential if Chara soaks up big minutes.

what makes you think that? he had a good season last year... i dont get the hate for him
Not meant as hate at all, just thinking/wondering about the pairings is all. Seems like we have a bunch of bodies on D now. TVR is also there, I thought that was a great signing

Chara is a legend of Slovak hockey. Even if it pushes him back a year, if Fehervary is part of taxi squad and learns from Chara it should be absolutely huge for him.

I'm still assuming they roll Schultz in the Top 4, at least to start the season, based on how they talked about him after signing him. Ultimately he could end up lower, and in that case I think Jensen has a better chance of supplanting him for Top 4 minutes than TvR does. Fehervary is the obvious dark horse to knock any of them out of the line-up if he's ready to step up.

(early season)
Dillon - Carlson
Orlov - Schultz
Chara - Jensen

(later)
Dillon - Carlson
Orlov - Fehervary/Jensen
Chara - Schultz

The other option would be moving Orlov back to RD

Dillon - Carlson
Fehervary/Siegenthaler - Orlov
Chara - Schultz/Jensen

This does seem to imply that they'll let Alexeyev ride out the rest of the season in the KHL.

The Capitals have a TON of defensemen now. I mean, they already did, but even more now. The issue is how many of them are actually capable of playing big minutes and key situations this season?

Defensemen who are clearly Top 4 D on basically any team in the league:
Carlson
Orlov

Aging legend:
Chara

Defensemen who are maybe Top 4 D in the right situation, but have also had significant stretches of their career they look better on bottom pairing roles:
Dillon
Jensen
Schultz

Young defensemen with promise:
Fehervary
Siegenthaler

High value guys that could steal spots:
TvR
LaDue

It's gonna come down to finding the right chemistry and pairings, but they certainly have a lot of options to work with. The Capitals "fourth and fifth" pairings are probably the best in the league, but that doesn't exactly pay dividends. Gonna be interesting to see if there's enough there to fill out the top two pairings with players that won't be outmatched against opposing top lines.
