because hes old and is off an awful season so he could be washed up

Could be washed up, but a PTO costs nothing and gives them an additional goalie in training camp. Outside of Samsonov, Vancek, and Copley they have no other current options. This season will require 3 goalies due to the taxi squad requirement, so adding someone to the mix for training camp makes a lot of sense.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to just keep him on the taxi squad as injury insurance and so that Hershey can have Copley in net?
Yeah, I think it's probably more like Anderson vs. whatever may be available on the waiver wire for a third goaltender. Not that Copley is out of the picture but his cap hit makes him a tough go on the active roster. It's fine on the taxi squad but if they carry three they don't need a fourth there.

Anderson would probably clear to join the taxi squad but they may be forced to carry three on the active roster vs. a fourteenth forward. Anderson at least has the veteran makeup to be a good fit. We'll see whether he's got game left, which will be somewhat tough to gauge based on scrimmages. You'd have to figure he's the favorite to be the third if he's halfway decent and brings a solid pro attitude to the group.

All very good points. Low risk high possible reward signing.

doesn’t fill the Lundy void. But it may fill a Vet back up void for sure. At no cost.

Why would 39 year old Craig Anderson want a taxi squad job?
Only reasons I could think of:
1) if he hasn’t won a cup before and thinks Washington has a legit shot at it. I didn’t look up his career history so no clue if he has a cup or not
2) He’s 39 and wants to go into the next phase of his career. Being on the taxi squad allows him the opportunity to still play but also be a mentor and coach to the young guys. Maybe he wants to see if coaching is something he’d be interested in doing.

3) He someone lost lots of money in bad investments

Not probable but that’s all I got

Kinda crazy how the Caps training camp should be starting this Sunday already.

Most of these guys want to play as long as they can. The taxi squad is a AHL job in an NHL city with team flights and no buses in a major league market. The Caps facilities are among the best in the league.

Meanwhile if he is 3 behind 2 goalies with a total of 22 NHL starts, the scenario where he gets to play isnt that wild. If he gets to play, he is in the net on a legit cup contender.

Seriously why would he not want it??

Why not 40 in 50 then?

Not sure if this is an Ov comment or not but we have sometimes speculated that Ovechkin could score at will if he wanted to. His ability to make 50 goals happen when it doesnt look realistic as an example. I really have to wonder if he doesnt have 5o in 5o coming here

Do we know when the training camp roster is released? And do we anticipate most of the players on Loan to europe/russia to return for camp, or will some players stay posted over there? I suppose that question will be answered when we see who is at training camp but was wondering if that had already been covered

As far as I know, the only one who has been recalled from a Euro league to the Caps training camp is Damien Riat. I expect him to be it out of those that were loaned, since players would have to undergo quarantine and Capitals training camp opens in just 6(!) days from now.

Which could be expected since the Euro leagues are probably a lot of these guys' best option for playing time for awhile. I think once they are recalled back to North America, that's it. Maybe McMichael might show up to camp after the WJCs?

Because he's a 39 year old veteran who probably isn't going to put himself thru the grind of an NHL season, be away from his family, and risk COVID exposure to be rewarded with zero playing time and an AHL salary. His wife is a cancer survivor and he's already had to take breaks from NHL action to care for her before. I don't see him putting himself thru undue amounts of risk to both him and his wife to not even get to play.

I know all about him. I know him even.

AHL salary on a one-way deal would be higher than on the active roster due to no escrow. Still a large paycut, of course. The draw of helping a contender out has to be appealing, esp. after the last few seasons he's had. Just because he starts on the taxi squad doesn't mean that's where he'll finish. But, like I said, I think there's a very good chance they carry three goaltenders on the active roster (TBD whether it's Anderson or someone via waivers on the cheap).

That's what I was wondering. If they're already on loan, might as well keep them over there and get them whatever games they can instead of traveling back and forth and missing out on games due to quarantine. Carr is also on loan but I imagine he would be called over, seems like an ideal taxi squad player.

I imagine AJF, Alexeyev, Protas, Geisser, and Nardella will all be staying put if that's the case.
