You are not worried much about this season? After they get some real experience, I could buy that. Thats then, though, not now. Right now they are a hand grenade ready to go off
Jesus. You can't get experience with out, you know, getting experience. Go out there, stop the puck, communicate with your defense. It's not easy but it's not rocket science, and your skill matters a lot more than your experience (especially in goal).

Ridiculous hand wringing.

Not hand wringing. Not doom and gloom. Realistic expectations. In general terms offense is skill and defense is experience. The most talented young goalies get better with experience. I would be pretty disappointed if this season was the best we get from Samsonov

That's not the same thing as worry. Not at all.

Worry? Did i use that word? My point has been consistent. Expecting a kid to take you to a cup is expecting too much. Give Sammy 2 or 3 seasons and he will be far better equipped. You dont agree?

Lottery ticket? Binnington was a lottery ticket. A 5th string goalie winning a cup. The Caps have a goaltending tandem with 22 NHL games between them. Thats not ideal

Goaltenders consistently say that playing at the NHL level is, in some ways, easier because of the order and caliber of the NHL defensemen. Players get better with experience across the board, that's prospect development, but having a talented goaltender gives you a lot more leeway to say "go out and keep the puck out of the net" than a young defenseman. Varlamov, Holtby, each was an improvement over more experienced alternatives because the job is relatively simple but hard to perform without skill.

He'll learn to stop it better later, but it doesn't make him incapable now.

Only if you take back your bitching.

If Dillon-Schultz is the most expensive third pair in the league it's only because Chara-Jensen is one of the cheapest second pairings.
Only if you buy youself some logic. Is Chara-Jensen cheap or not doesn't change the fact that Dillon-Schultz are paid $7M for the 3rd pair job they actually deliver. Hear insults from a guy with no logic sense is amazingly harmless.

You paint them to be a burden when it's a luxury, they didn't deliver a third pairing job tonight. More like having two second pairs.

Not their fault Chara-Jensen looked good.

Wonder if there will be my immediate changes for game 2. Probably Sheary/Sprong?

wonder what happens if VV plays a blinder.

Maybe rest Chara on the end of back to backs and get Siegenthaler and/or van Reimsdyk in?

Also, there is a chance Dowd might get suspended a game for that hit on Staal. Think he hit the shoulder first and then got glanced up into Eric Staal head, but it's the DoPS, so who knows.

I'm not feeling it from Sammy. He strikes me as a passenger, and those never become elite at the goaltender position.

What struck me about Samsonov is he seemed out of rhythm – not always sure where the puck was, sometimes a bit out of position, scrambling around a lot. I know he's a very athletic and energetic guy, who has been lauded for never giving up on plays, and those are great characteristics when used right. But it's like he's still getting a feel for the game at NHL level, which after playing just 27 games he no doubt is.

Too soon to describe him as a 'passenger' or someone with capped potential.

That said, I do still worry about the goaltending coaching. Holtby's regular season play dropped off the same season Murray replaced Korn and, other than the brief spell where Korn stepped in, never improved. Samsonov got worse the more time he spent in the NHL last year. I'm not saying Murray is to blame, or the sole problem, but it's another of those coaching positions where you have to wonder if we'd be better with someone with more proven NHL coaching experience?

Eh. He's just a bit twitchy at times. It's funny because back when he was draft-eligible that wasn't the case. He was very much in the Carey Price quietude mold. With experience, reps and confidence he can get there but I'm not sure Murray is that guy. My guess is Vanecek gets the start tonight.

Between a new system and no pre-season we've got to cut them some slack for a while. I thought Schultz showed some real puck-moving savvy. Ideally I think you'd like to see more dangerous offensive flashes but that'll take time calculating when to be aggressive. While I'll have some patience for 9/74 as the top pair I don't think that will be their go-to configuration ultimately. It's fine situationally, when trailing mostly. Perhaps McCarthy will develop some of the kinks out over time but as-is I think it's prone to more risk than reward.
