which means they’re traveling with the team....practicing, same film study regimen, etc.....to be ready at the drop of a hat.
Yup exactly.

If it's 1PM and the team does their daily COVID screening (or whatever the procedures will be), and 2 guys have COVID, they need the reserve of extra guys to quickly bring them in.

The podcast also talked about certain idea's about these taxi squad guys still getting only their AHL salary, but NHL per-diems. And that no real idea about the salary cap impacts. I would assume that if it's COVID related injuries, there would be no cap implications to replace the guy. As the idea is that within a few weeks the original player gets better and goes back to playing. Too much complexity if you have to start changing the cap that significantly.

That is 7 extra players. Usually NHL teams dont go that deep unless those players are injured themselves. The Caps first defense call is Fehervary. There's no point in putting non call ups on the extended roster or taxi squad. Either Fever stays in Washington or goes to the AHL for the season.
I get what you’re saying. The point I’m trying to make is it’s going to be a tough call for the NHL squad to risk developmental time versus being the 7th or 8th dman sitting in a press box most nights. Would it make sense for Fehervary, who has sat out for months now, to practice and get limited third pairing minutes? Or would the Caps look at the time he has lost so far and give him a very large role in Hershey where he’s playing top pair, PK and PP while working on adding some offensive to his tool box? There’s a few guys who definitely are going to compete for a spot and in a normal situation they’d be in Hershey with a first call up option. My thought is that the big club would rather use guys who are mainly AHL mainstays but can play in the NHL in a pinch, like a Daniel Carr or a Mike Sgarbossa over the likes of AA, Fehervary, AJF, Pilon etc who would be possibly competing for a spot on Washington.

McMichael is a completely different story. If the OHL bans hitting or keeps delaying their start date, I’d venture Washington wants him on the Taxi Squad (if that’s even allowed)

New divisions, taxi squad. They should let the audience in but with masks only like in supermarkets.
I want real hockey back not like that bubble experiment. I'm bored of being bored.

Appears to me that the Caps have already decided that Fehervary isnt NHL ready as they have him at 9 on the depth chart. Realistically speaking, if teams are carrying 8 spare players how much value are AHL games going to have anyway?

Was it known that Brooks Orpik is currently an assistant coach at BC? Thought he had some kind of a developmental role within the organization.

It was a part time job as i recall. I expect this is now a full time job and the Caps will take him back when he is ready

I don’t get what you mean by that? The taxi squad will take some good AHL players away for sure, but it still is going to be littered with talent IMO. The league has transformed quite a bit the past 3-5 years to focus more on development so there’s still going to be some very good players in the league. Look at it this way, would the Caps rather have AJF playing 2nd tier in Sweden or would they rather him getting reps in the AHL?

A fine question in any other year, but this year the question is would they rather have him playing in the AHL or use the unique roster constraints to get him extended practice reps at the NHL level?

Is a guy like AJF going to learn more being in the AHL in a bigger role, or by learning and adjusting to NHL speed in the role he's likely to play.

I’d still argue playing games over practicing is better for development. He can get practice reps AND a big role in Hershey. Remember, the AHL rarely plays games during Monday-Thursday. They sometimes get a Wednesday game sprinkled in. The week of practice is a lot of reps and skill development and the Caps/Bears have been great at using outside resources (skills coaches, skating coaches, etc.) during their week of practice to give the guys a better prospective.

Plus, a lot of these guys haven’t played an actual competitive hockey game in 9+ months. How beneficial is it to their overall development to sit out almost every night barring some sort of injury or COVID spread in the locker room?

The kids are all going to have large roles in Hershey this year. It’s a big developmental year for a lot of guys. Playing games is going to be what’s best for them IMO to see their growth and evaluate them going forward.

But we arent talking about AJF. We are talking about Fehervary and AA and McMichael and Vitek. The top AHL vets are in the expanded NHL. The top NHL call up ready AHL prospects are in the NHL. Others have been loaned to Europe and are gone. Would you learn more practicing and scrimmaging and film prepping in the NHL or playing a rotating 3 teams of watered down AHL teams? Its not an easy choice.

Pretty ignorant take on the AHL as a whole. Will the league lose talent? Yes. Calling it watered down is way off course. And they aren’t going to play 3 teams all year cmon tx.

We clearly know your opinion on it and I’ve stated mine. Moving on now.

Apparently the league is discussing putting ads on players helmets for the upcoming season. I personally wouldn’t mind it if it meant some extra revenue into the team/league. Would certainly help offset loses. They just have to make sure it’s subtle and not overbearing. Similar to how the NBA has the subtle logo on their jerseys

You think that guys will get the same level of quality and quantity of development in the AHL this season? I’m not seeing it.

We are talking about a mixture of each NHL team's best 8 AHL players. Lets say its 6 with 2 out of work NHLrs. 6 is almost a third of a game roster. With those almost entirely the top of the roster watered down is kind.

A quick check shows that the 4 team rotation is the Canadian teams. At present though, the league doesnt know how many teams they will have and how they will be arranged or schedule.

I am for it too, especially if it helps the league play more games that I get to watch.

Actually I'd say sell the whole uniforms except I know a lot of other fans actually care about that.

Weird random thought: they never credited Jay Beagle the ENG in Game 7 against the Lightning in 2018. I thought for sure there would be a scoring change after they originally gave it to Backstrom.

Yeah, everytime I watch the SC run highlights, I've always this question. How you can't see on the replays that it's Beagle's goal.

Yeah weird. Even if they ruled it glanced off Backstrom's stick before it went it in, then Beagle should get an assist. But it's scored as an unassisted goal for Backstrom.

I just watched that goal. Maybe I am not seening it right. TB player passes it out from behind the net to another TB player how doesnt handle it clean. Backstrom's blade is inside Beagle's and Beags never touches it.
