We really rolling into 2020-21 with some combo of Ovi, Backstrom, Wilson, Oshie, Kuzy, and Vrana in the top six, followed by:

Panik/Eller/Sprong and
Hagelin/Dowd/Hathaway?

I don’t hate it, but I think $4M would’ve been better spent upgrading that third line and rolling with Jensen and TVR as your 2nd and 3rd pair RHD instead of gambling on Schultz to bounce back.

agreed, and I know we wanted a puck moving defenseman to help push play, but I don’t see it working. The bottom six didn’t produce enough and that was a huge issue, that remains unchanged. I’m still hopeful new coaches get more out of them, but I don’t see this roster top to bottom as any better than last year.

Would anyone be up for a Vrana-Laine trade if we could make salaries work? Purely hypothetical, I know.
I would think it would take Vrana + someone like McMichael and probably some extra picks to get WPG to consider. To me, that’s a little steep, and Laine is in for an even bigger raise than Vrana next offseason

so what exactly should be changed about the bottom six to make it better?
I would’ve much rather had Dadonov at $5M on the third line than Schultz at $4M. Would probably have to move Siegs out and bump MF into the third pairing to make the extra $$$ work:

Ovi/Backstrom/Wilson
Vrana/Kuzy/Oshie
Panik/Eller/Dadonov
Hagelin/Dowd/Hathaway

Dillon/Carlson
Orlov/Jensen
Fehervary/TVR

Not at all. Ovechkin can do what Laine does, neither can do what Vrana does.

edit: not saying he's the best player among them but Vrana's speed is a different weapon and a valuable element of diversity. And actually, looking at it, Vrana is about as productive as Laine and a better even strength goal scorer with a lot less opportunity so I'd definitely keep him.

we are a little over the Cap w Schultz. We’d be a cool 1m more over the cap w Dadonov.

Ottawa had money. Would’ve easily outbid us if need be, as well.

Are you factoring in Kempny going on LTIR?

Re: Ottawa outbidding — we’d have about a 10% advantage on state and federal income taxes on them. So our $5M AAV offer would equal ~$5.5M from Ottawa. Also, have to think Dadonov would much prefer playing on a contender in DC with several other Russians vs being stuck in Ottawa.

Lol wow....refusing Laine for Vrana...

Not sure I could stand looking at Laine’s ugly mug so often though lol....
I don't want to try to pay him, do you? He's not going to be "the guy" with Ovechkin here and he's not going to want that anyway, that PP time is basically gone, it just doesn't work. Then there's the perceived attitude and all the off-ice drama about his compete level, why bother?

I already said it's not a value thing but he's redundant and not something they can easily absorb in the near future without some serious restructuring.

Hard pass on Hoffman and his baggage.

panik can go back to 3rd line under new coach and system.

I’d like Malenstyn on the 4th line.

Will be interesting to see how D shakes out past the top 4

Yo tinner in the house.

Last 3 seasons (since Vrana’s rookie year) at 5v5:

Vrana - 2737 TOI 55g 46a 101p (1.21G/60, 2.21P/60)
Laine - 3152 TOI 50g 44a 94p (0.95G/60, 1.79P/60)

Scoring is the only thing Laine brings and Vrana does it better than him at even strength. Ovechkin would take away his PP spot and a lot of his PP time. Laine’s one of the worst defensive forwards in the league and doesn’t drive offense for his team either. He’s extremely one dimensional. And he’s going to command a much bigger contract than Vrana.

Does Laviolette like to switch up line combinations often?

I think the bottom 6 concerns are overblown anyway, we still scored 240 goals last year, good for 2nd in the league. Add in Laviolette, we should have no issues scoring next year. But if people insist we need a 3rd line "catalyst" you could see Panik/Sprong rotate into the top 6, bump Oshie or Vrana down

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Wilson
Panik-Backstrom-Oshie
Vrana-Eller-Sprong
Hagelin-Dowd-Hathaway

There's plenty of different combinations you could try with that top 9. Panik is still an effective playdriver, I don't think he would look out of place with some top 6 looks. Same with Sprong

Hagelin.......LOL

Nothing. Its everyone trying to get him off the 3rd line.
Idk why you're so hung up on Hagelin having to be on the 3rd line. I'm sure he'll slot it in there plenty, but having him 4th line LW with #1PK unit is fine... If Hagelin is at 3LW, then that means Panik/Sprong/McMichael being 4th liners. I believe all three offer more offensive upside than Hagelin so they should play up IMO. If Sprong or McMichael both fail to make they team and they stick a guy like Malenstyn at 4LW than it's a lot easier to pencil him in at 3LW. Either way, I don't really care. We have at least three months until hockey so until then, I'm gonna f around with some line combos

Hung up? I just think its that is where he will be playing. Its funny to me that if Lavy lines him up at 3LW, he will be the only one that thinks that is the way to go with him
