Just to help you appreciate Carlson
Green: 501 points in 880 games
Carlson: 478 points in 757 games

Different players. Different situations.

Here's what I see for their Caps' careers:
Green WAS 10 Yrs 575 Games 113G 247A 360Pts .626 PPG
Carlson WAS 11 Yrs 757 Games 105G 373A 478Pts .631 PPG

Carlson may be a bit less susceptible to injury but the above show little difference in overall RS production.

Green's team made the playoffs in 8 of his 15 seasons.
Carlson's in 10 of his 11 seasons.

When Carlson is as old as Green is now and has played as many years on a non-playoff team, we can compare career stats.

I’ll screen cap it if anyone wants, but someone on an Athletic article asked Tarik if he thought a big move was coming he said (paraphrasing) “The top 6, Eller, Carlson, and Samsonov are safe, everyone else should keep their phone on them. Wouldn’t be surprised if a move happens that no one sees coming”

Orlov is the obvious man being left off that safe list.

That's a pipe dream to get a 2C. The whole league looks for them. Our only option is a home growing (continue w Kuzy on C and hope he improves and start grooming McMichael on the position). Plus they aren't cheap and we can't afford them anyway with all our untouchables.

I could see that, but I would think that might be sending the wrong message. When the team was struggling down the stretch Jensen was playing his best game. In the playoffs, he may have been the most consistant defenseman on the ice. If you are looking for compete level and then you ditch a guy clearly providing it....i dont know. Kempny......
I would rather they upgrade the LD spot next to Carlson, too. My point was just that I would expect them to see Orlov in a similar light, as a core piece they want to give more help, if anything.

Nothing against Carlson but Green was cleanly beating NHL goalies with unscreened shots from the top of the circles. This was also before the 1-3-1 pp set up where Green carried a lot more of the load. Carlson is subtle and as a result he doesnt get the credit he has earned. Green could take over games.

Edit: I went and checked streak goals. He is on the ice with Ov and 3 forwards all down low. Backstrom, Laich and Circles.

I guess it depends on what you are wanting out of Orlov. I still contend that he is effectively playing out of position. He is a Carlson type defenseman assigned to Orpik/Alzner style work. He underuses his most dynamic skills and overuses his secondary skills.

Given the right additions, i would prefer to see Orlov with Carlson as the attack pair.

I guess I have to ask what kind of team you want if you put Kuzy on the wing?

my thought was we could take a little of the defensive responsibility off of him if we have a solid two way guy as 2C. Maybe it wouldn’t work, but I’d be willing to try it.

Love both of them, but Green was known for offense, and I think Carlson’s career numbers are sometimes overlooked. Was not poo pooing on Green

What I see is a team that plays heavy hockey with a second line with two distinctly un heavy wingers on the forecheck. You cant play the same style of hockey. I also have to ask if they can find a 2c that brings as much to the top 6 as TJ Oshie does

I mean, it kind of sounds like a 2C is available.

Cheap is relative to what our outlook is. Are we actually trying to try make one more big push before the Ovi/Backstrom window closes? I'm for that, and if that's the case that might regard selling some futures.

You can't really have it both ways. Can't expect to win a Cup without ever having to deal with a few down years from paying your pound of flesh. I'd be okay with opening up to moving picks or even prospects in addition to anyone not on the "Safe" list.

Offensive prowess aside I was always amazed at how Mike "Vespa" Green could not take a hit/protect himself. I don't think he ever learned.

That goal scoring streak was freaking awesome and maybe the peak of his career. Yes I did lobby for him to follow in the ice tracks of his idol Paul Coffey, and be moved to RW. Low point for me was seeing him bum rushed for the backbreaking SLG goal to Monty 2010.

More like team breaking. That one hurt.

Green 71 gp 9 g 26 a 35 p -2 75 PIM 23:24 avg
That is 1 fight and 35 minors, that’s about 0.09 expected gpg given to the other team in the playoffs, by comparison Brendan Witt had 13 minors in 31 games and that guy loved to rack up minors
Carlson 112 gp 18 g 48 a 66 p +1 44 PIM 24:21 avg
Orlov 63 gp 2 g 17 a 19 p +1 16 PIM 21:36 avg

There’s a part of me that would entertain the idea of moving McMichael at what is likely his peak value as a prospect. Obviously he could have more value if he pans out in a couple years, but it’s unlikely he has more value at any point between now and when he truly establishes himself as an NHLer.

Might be unwise to trade our A level prospects, especially in a position we need one.

He's also cheap for the next few years, we'll need the Cap space.

That list plus Orlov is all I really want to stay. Orlov is in his prime, really would be a mistake getting rid of him IMO

Id guess the actual untouchable list is:

Ovechkin, Backstrom, Wilson, Carlson, Orlov, Samsonov.
