only have 3 things to say about this game as I'm still extremely disappointed.

1 - I can't beleive Wheeler didn't try and slam that puck in instead of celebrate like an idoit too early. (with that said, I still love my boy Wheels).

2 - Pavelec made like 5 Save of the Year saves last night, it was incredible.

3 - Did Antro play his best game of the year?

I don't think your paying attention to Anthing I say or write, no offense.

And to clarify of all those things you posted the biggest problem and most underperforming vs rest of the league is pavs. And he's the easiest to fix as Hes just one player. Our scoring is middle of the league, shots against middle of the league .. Pavs? Pretty much the bottom.

I don't think it's that cut and dry. Is Pavs one player? Absolutely. But easiest to fix? I'm not even close to buying that one.

This is an area where stats don't always tell you what you need to know. Suffice to say your anti-Pavs chatter is nearly as bad as my anti-Hainsey chatter so I'm going to be honest with you here: there isn't one person on this board that could convince me to keep Hainsey on this team if I had the power of Castle Greyskull. So I'm going to assume you're the same way about Pavs and leave it at that.

The one thing I want understood though in my defense is I don't think Pavs is at his full potential, and I'm not totally sold on him being 'the guy'. (Just for clarity).

Tough loss. Not gonna rag on the boys- we were missing some key guys last night and it showed. Bring on les habitants- should be fun a game to be at playoffs or not. If it is the last game of the year - I hope we end it loud and proud.

We are prob gonna finish 9th,,,,,,We didn't sell at the deadline and will get one of the worst draft picks of any non playoff team (unless a lottery miracle) This organizationally is the worst possible outcome for this season IMO

I'm also annoyed by this. At least we kept Hainsey around for a few extra games to show the younger D-men how to play defense on your knees (or stomach).

that game was rough.

Since it often looks like we're "not trying" against the caps, for pretty much every game this year i've come to the conclusion that washington is pretty much just the perfect tonic for the jets.

Whatever system oats is using it seems to be the exact counter to the jets plays. They constantly hnd our outlets covered, did a great job of keeping the puck in the zone by taking away the side boards, and the behind the net play seems like a gauraunteed one to pulling the jets d out of position.

I just noticed that all the things that failed the jets the last two times against washington, failed them again, and i just have trouble believing they happened to make the exact same mistakes three-four games in a row(vs washington).

It looked like we really had trouble adapting, and though we could have had two or three more goals, we were clearly outplayed that game.

This was sort of exemplified witht he power play. We kept trying to use the same entry and getting rejected and there was absolutely no change/adaptation in the game plan- now that was frustrating.

all in all though, it wasn't bad. it was unlikely for us to win it in the first place given the state of our club, but i'm still proud of the boys.

and on the brightside, if we were in th western conference, wed be in the playoffs right now so there is hope for the future :P

That was indeed me lol. Summary of my call was pavs is a career 905 guy and in the most important game of the year let a goal in from behind the red line off his back. Then I talked about how we're going to yet done ;have some chance at Ottawa and new York

I knew that was you! Really well-stated opinion, and props to you for putting your name on it.

Don't know how anyone could disagree with what I thought was the central point of your argument, which was actually pretty insightful: at the very least, the Jets should be exploring their options in goal and searching for a goalie to push Pavelec.

Thanks :) some are taking exception because they think I have a blind pavs hate but I'm viewing our team in a more wholistic way.

Nuance gets lost on internet message boards. I thought you clarified your position quite well.

Yes, this team needs help several areas. Why should goaltender be an exception? My dream is for Chevy to find a guy like Viktor Fasth in the offseason who can challenge and overtake Pavelec.

It's not about hating Pavelec, it's about wanting a better, more consistent netminder. What's wrong with that?

Antti Raanta would be a huge coup if we could land him. He is going to be a real solid NHL netminder whenever he decides to come over. But I want Anton Khudobin. Sign him Chevy!!!

Yup, agree on both counts. Would also really like Chevy to look long and hard at bringing Alexander Salak over, and have him battle for a backup spot.

Jeez, if only Pavelec had a defensive powerhouse like Devan Dubnyk and Nik Khabibulin have playing in front of them. If only he had the brilliance of Ryan Whitney and the defensive genius of Ralph Krueger to inflate his stats, maybe he'd be within hailing distance of those two legendary netminders save percentage.

I want Pavelec to succeed like you wouldn't believe, but even I can't defend him much longer. He's a below average starting goalie.

Stats and evidence. Harumph!

Couldn't have stated it better myself. For now he is our best option but we need to continue to explore all other avenues for our goal tending. pavelec will be 26 next season and continues to be a goaltender at the 906 mark. How many seasons and how many more games will some of his supporters need before they will believe his save percentage. At some point after 4 or five seasons you have to say that if the shoe fits ... Wear it.

Re; the big goaltending debate taking place..

I am pretty well in the same boat as the above here. I like Pavelec, and I don't blame him for us missing the playoffs BUT I do think if he was more consistent and didn't gift wrap the amount of softies he does, perhaps we do make the playoffs. I mean, sure he played good over all the last couple games and he has indeed made some timely nice saves, but the point also stands in the last 2 games he let in 2-3 softies... that's the main point here in regards to Pavelec.

Lots of goalies make great timely saves, lots. Fact is, in my opinion, and as stated by others, Ondrej Pavelec to this point is a below average starting goaltender in the NHL. I hope that changes. Our defence is and can be bad, injured, etc.. our team does indeed leave Pavelec out to dry at times, but that doesn't change the main point here, Pavelec let's in a lot of soft goals. A lot. As a fan, I personally go in to each and every game not knowing what Ondrej Pavelec will give us as our goaltender. Even when Pavelec is "on his game" and making nice, key saves, he'll let in a softy or two. The last 2 games are absolute perfect examples of that. It's a problem. Many fans alluded to it last offseason, and, again right now.

Aside from goaltending, ya, this team has some holes. Won't deny that, either.

hello from the east. last night had to be expected. winning both ends of a back to back on the road is always hard. harder when the home team is rested. that was going to be a tough game to win from the beginning. the jets tied the game and gave the caps a chance to collapse. they didnt, but they could have.

to be that close to the playoffs and wish your team had sold at the deadline because now the team finishes 9th is just silly. i can look at the capitals and see player selected after that draft position. mike green and john carlson for starters.

i think you should be proud of your team for making a great run at it with the compressed schedule and playing in the southeast making it harder on them than any team in the league.

enjoy the west next season!

Good god, if Wheels had only made sure the puck was in the net..

TRIGGER WARNING: MAY CAUSE UNCONTROLLABLE SOBBING

2hflheu.gif

Just to stick up for Wheels here a bit, cause everyone is ragging on him...

2 things

1) I was always taught by coaches to celebrate anything that's close. If a ref sees a team celebrating, he is expecting to call a goal, and if you don't celebrate anything at all sometimes you get screwed by stuff they don't see.

2) This gif is pretty much from Wheeler's angle. Isn't there a point where it already looks totally and unquestionably in? If you've ALREADY SEEN IT cross the line, why would you jam it in? Next time wheels goes bar down and the puck stops barely across the line, should he reach in and slam it into the netting at the back? No. From his perspective, it was already completely and unquestionably a goal, why would he need to be an ass and reach in there and slam it?

Ease up on him, it's unfortunate, but it's hardly a huge lapse, in context it makes a great deal of sense that he did what he did.

Yeah, no kidding. I'd rather breed a culture of winning than move up a few draft spots.

I agree. From his angle when the puck was in the air, it probably looked like it was in. Erskine and his damn black magic.

I think the reason Pavelec has so much discussion around him is that I feel he gets far too much of the blame. He's not blameless, certainly, goals like the first one should not go in when you're playing arguably one of the most important games of your career.

I think his stat line is certainly misleading. He's got a better save percentage than guys like Carey Price, Martin Brodeur, and Jonathan Quick this season. I have also been pretty impressed with how he seems to have matured when it comes to responding to bad goals. He doesn't seem to let it get to him. His third period play is also much better; early in the season he would give up early 3rd period goals that would kill the momentum, and he lately hasn't done that. 3rd period goals this team has given up over this stretch have not really been his fault.

His high glove hand and breakaways have improved.

Pavelec is missing someone who can give him a break every now and then. I know we all loved Montoya at the start of the year, but I don't really think he would be capable of 20-25 starts per season. I think that, unless the Jets can pull a guy like Khudobin, that Montoya is back next year again, and we'll have to see if he can prove he can spell Pavelec for a bit.

I also think he needs a bit of a better defensive system in front of him. I know Pavelec isn't perfect but it's frustrating sometimes to see him get the blame when the team can't get it out of the zone for 3+ minutes at a time. The breakouts this year have not been great.

Thats funny, I was taught that if you see a puck in the crease bang the hell out of it lol, in a game this important why would you even chance it?

Pavs has made way more "save of the year" saves than he's let in stinkers. The reason he has to make those saves...look no further than our awful defense. Pavs not only faces a lot more shots than most, he faces a lot tougher shots than most as well because our defense doesn't challenge anyone. So when Pavs lets in a softie here and there, he's more than made up for it elsewhere.

As if you guys are blaming that loss (and us missing the playoffs) on Pavelec.

3 goals scored by Washington yesterday were directly the fault of the Defense.

Clitsome / Hainsey left Chimera wide open in front. PLUS THEY LET HIM GET TWO WHACKS AT THE PUCK!!!!

Hainsey does his lame ****ing knee slide in attempt to block Ovi's pass, we were taught to take the trailer and let the goalie play the shooter in that type of situation, especially on such a sharp angle down low, Ovi scores maybe 2/10 times from there. Pavs would have had it.

The scrum in front of the net (3rd goal) why wouldn't our guys be beating them down Defense 101, clear the garbage away from the goal!!!

Goal #1 was on Pavs' head though, that was a softy. Other than that he made some big saves for us.

1) We aren't getting rid of Pavelec.

2) We aren't getting rid of Wheeler (for not punching the puck in)

3) We aren't getting rid of Mittens, or Antro, or the other "softies"

4) Hainsey is gone after tomorrow and (with any luck) a short stint in the playoffs.

I guess it depends on how much you value Hainsey's contribution. He was a combined -10 in March and April (-5 in April). He has had a total of two plus games in the last 20, and only three since the beginning of March.

Trading Hainsey wouldn't have been primarily to "move up a few draft spots", but more to secure an additional upper end draft pick or two so that the Jets could continue to try to build some depth in their system.

both of those are UFA's. I would be absolutely shocked if we resigned mittens. Antro, not so much. But Mittens? yes.

at the end of the day, jump through whatever logic you want, but pavs puts up worse numbers then other "average" goalies on worse teams.

he is also one player.

one player in the most important position.

a position that also would then statistically have the most ready available replacements (given that their are only 60 jobs, its most likely capable replacements are being unused)

I don't know how you can possibly argue that replacing pavelec with a better goalie would not be the biggest upgrade possible by only changing one player.

I still hold out hope for that last playoff spot, but if that slim chance doesn't materialize, I look forward to the draft and any changes made over the off season. Chevy knows who should be replaced and who shouldn't, let's hope he makes the tough decisions.

Still happy to have a team to debate!!!

This is tracked/calculated, and that's totally incorrect.

If you think the reason his save % is so far below league average is that our defense is SO bad that it's dragging him down all that way, explain miller in Buffalo or Dubnyk in Edmonton. Is Dubnyk a top 2 goalie in the league to have a Sv% like that on that team?

Save of the year saves are only made when a goalie is out of position. The perfect goalie would never make any of those because he would always simply be in the right spot, and would be able to calmly react. No goalie is capable of doing that obviously, but Lundquist makes less 'crazy highlight reel saves' than Pavelec does, and given the choice I'd take Henrik in net 17 times out of 10.

"Save of the Year"s are a result of athleticism to save something that gets out of hand, and that technique can no longer take care of, not brilliant talent. Don't get me wrong, I smile when he makes them, but there are a few too many.

Only because goalie is the single most important position on any team, so it is axiomatic to say that the biggest change you could make on any team would be to improve at the goaltender.

Is it just me or is the East a better conference to play in than the west? I've grown to love watching the jets play against the caps, pens, leafs... West has some exciting teams to watch as well but I tend to like games with a ton of goals more than tight 1 goal games. I'm gonna miss the Eastern conf. when we move next season :D

It's fitting that we play against the habs in our last game in the east, Since we played against them in our first game back in the bigs! (We lost that game though, Here's hoping for some vengeance)
