And they will….Sounds like VA taxpayers and particularly Alexandria could be on the hook for anywhere from 1.3 to 3 billion, depending on how ticket sales and concessions go. Given the response on this board and from my seatmates and friends who are Wizards planholders, it sounds like ownership will need to find a whole new cohort of ticket buyers in the new location.
If they can't iron out the transpo issues I think that would be the thing to sink it. Del Ray NIMBYs can suck it.I just read through this thread since my post on the day this came out. A few thoughts...
1) Ted wants land. It doesn't matter what the city offered or offers, Ted wants SoFi/Arlington (tx) etc where there is a whole entertainment complex that he controls. DC doesn't have 70 acres it can just fork over in addition to 10 figures of cash. Perhaps if/when the RFK or FBI sites are closer to available, she could do that, but not at the moment.
2) The transportation issues for PY are real. For anyone coming from north of Gallery Place or west of Rosslyn, add a half hour each way to get to Potomac Yards metro. For people driving, I cannot even fathom how a weeknight game will work, given Route 1 is a nightmare currently and there likely won't be any changes allowed on GW Parkway.
3) the proposal is for a limit of 2500 parking spaces on site, which means likely about 15,000 fans and another 800 arena workers/security etc will need to arrive at a metro station that was designed for generously 10,000 total trips per day. In other words, they will have to retrofit this metro station that currently has a single escalator and required a foot bridge to access. In DC, the city remade the Gallery Place and Navy Yard stations to work for major league sports. In today's dollars, that is another 200 million or so.
4) The Del Ray NIMBYs are already mobilizing: Stop the Potomac Yard Arena
Give them a few months and they will have a strong coalition, because they are really good at NIMBYing.
Ted has no shame. Too bad you can just buy the caps games. I would never watch his other teams.
I assume you don’t remember the DC hellscape that surrounded the arena when it opened? Yet somehow it all worked out just fine over time. Exactly as this will also.Whatever you need to tell yourself to justify your choices. I guess anyone who doesn't support giving handouts to billionaires spends their free time looting.
Most people agree that having one metro platform service 95% of the metro map after games is a downgrade from the current location. I guess others just don't see that as a problem?
DC Mayor/Gov should have taken the Zards/Caps more seriously wwith 80+ home games between them versus 8 home games for the commanders.I assume you don’t remember the DC hellscape that surrounded the arena when it opened? Yet somehow it all worked out just fine over time. Exactly as this will also.
And what choices am I justifying exactly, besides engaging in this discussion…?
He's definitely getting a new casino. Greedy Ted doesn't care about the teams or the fans anymore, it's all about building his Monumental cash empire. How large is Ted's casino going to be at the new location ... or will he be satisfied expanding at the Cap One location ??
Yeah Ted, do the ‘right’ thing, incompetent local government be damned…He's definitely getting a new casino. Greedy Ted doesn't care about the teams or the fans anymore, it's all about building his Monumental cash empire.
Appreciate the optinion but do not get the whole caring thing when it comes to US pro sports owners. He's definitely getting a new casino. Greedy Ted doesn't care about the teams or the fans anymore, it's all about building his Monumental cash empire.
I think specifically with Ted it's because of his statements and actions when he purchased the Capitals. He was a fans owner, I messaged him on AOL a few times and he answered me in the way back machine. He's a different cat now and I don't think he's grown in a positive direction as an owner over the decades. I'm almost 40 now, I grew up with season tickets for as a kid and into my adult life once I could afford my own. I moved to PA and I guess from the tone of this thread I don't get a say anymore because I'm not a season ticket holder now. But me and my family have invested enough in his Monumental company over the years where I feel pretty comfortable stating my displeasure with his actions.Appreciate the optinion but do not get the whole caring thing when it comes to US pro sports owners.
Simple jealousy….anger at billionaires….oh and don’t inconvenience me in any way.Appreciate the optinion but do not get the whole caring thing when it comes to US pro sports owners.
