Yes you may be.Am I crazy to think Marner signing a one year deal might make the most sense for everyone?

** Based on the new capfriendly listing it appears all this rookie bonus are now off the books with a clean slate for this upcoming season.
I still suspect that we'll acquire Miller and run something similar to this:
Johnsson-Matthews-Nylander
Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Moore-Kadri-Kapanen
Marleau-Brooks-Petan
Muzzin-Rielly
Dermott-Miller
Rosén-Liljegren
Borgman
Andersen
Backup
With a combined $5.5M to Kapanen and Johnsson, and $9.5M to Marner... it just barely squeaks through. We should probably try to squeeze down the first number by $1M so we can add a 13th forward for road games.

One Patrick Marleau.....Roughly $14M with the Horton LTIR relief:
Modest RFA numbers:
$10M Marner
$3.1M Kapanen
$2.9M Johnsson
Total $16M
Over by $2M
Still short 2 to 3 defensemen (and a new backup goalie): $3M to $5M
Over by about $5M to $7M. Need to move at least $6M in contract(s).
Yes. Which should be an obvious choice. So are you dumping Zaitsev and Brown making a combined $5.6 mil to resign Kapanen and AJ for $5.5 ?
Yes. Which should be an obvious choice.
Until Marner signs everything is up in the air.
Might actually be better if he holds out for the year.

Wallmark a cheaper option yes and he is pretty decent.Getting MM, AJ, KK to a combined 15 million
Trading Kadri for Wallmark+ 1st+
Trading Brown for whatever
Hyman-Tavares-Matthews
Johnsson-Matthews-Nylander
Marleau-Wallmark-Kapanen
Mikheyev-Gauthier-Moore
Petan
Rielly-xxx
Muzzin-Zaitsev
Dermott-Liljegren
Holl
3.2 million to fill xxx beside Rielly
What isn't so obvious is are you just getting rid of players under contract you don't like, in order to make Leafs cap work and sign players you do?
Unloading Zaitsev who has 5 years @ $4.5 mil remaining for futures isn't really all that easy in real life, besides he is Leafs only legitimate RHD that plays in the top 4?
Cap management would be easy if it simply worked like that as then most would just magically remove Marleau.
Dubas is faced with tougher decisions because he can't just pretend players under contract don't exist.
Rosen or Sandin might break into lineup not sure if Liljegren will be ready. Rosen probably has the best chance.
Rosen might not just make it into the lineup, he'll be a regular on pairing #3. Sandin will likely start the year with the Leafs in Dermott's absence. Sandin and Liljegren will probably start the year in the minors and come up at the deadline when the rosters expand. They'll be internal deadline additions like Moore this year and Johnsson the year before. Liljegren needs waivers the following year, so he's coming up then either way. It would make sense to give him reps in the NHL and also let him develop some offensive confidence next season in the AHL. They will all be full time in 20/21.I wouldn’t rely on Liljegren and Sandin in the top 6 to be an upgrade the the D.
Sandin is only 19 and probably could use another year in the minors.
I’m all for giving them a chance but I think with the short window they have to win they may make a big trade that’ll include Liljegren or maybe both.

I meant he'll go down after Dermott is back.Ummm
What is better for the Leafs, Marner getting $10-11 mil on a 5-6 year deal or sitting out the season for cap reasons?
If the answer is none of the above then what is option #3?
That much salary for a bridge would be so hard to swallow. Essentially giving Marner Kutch money for almost 1/3rd of the term.3 years at 8.5-9 million?
- 1 year away from UFA
- Lower AAV, with his team pumping his 11m tires the fans would view this as a hometown discount
- Helps during major cap crunch
- He gets to 're set' his salary at age 25, before Matthews/Nylander/Tavares, likely meaning he is the highest paid for a few seasons
- 3rd contract, assuming 8 year deal brings him through ALL of his prime and ends at 33
- 3 years from now cap will be much higher, so he will get a decent raise even if just re signing on same cap %
Win-Win? Maybe
That'd be quite the gamble based on what he accomplished for the team this past season.

If Lily and Sandin play over the slide limit amount of games (13 or something?) wouldnt they be eligible for the expansion draft?
