I'm sorry but after 6 years of rebuilding I really hope SYs plan to end the rebuild anytime soon isnt via taking on more cap dumps.

It's time go start making more to actually improve the on ice roster via trade or cree agency and supplement with some of the dozens of picks we've made recently.

That in and of itself wont make us contenders overnight, we'll still be picking top 10 in 2023, but that's the stage we need to be in.

Montreal, Arizona and Seattle are the cap dump teams

Very likely Yzerman is going to be more aggressive in free agency this year going after quality players, whether he's able to land any who knows. Regardless, they're still not going to be a cap team next year and if you can weaponize that extra space to acquire more future assets you do it

Sure perhaps if on the last year of a deal okay

But multi years left I doubt the return is worth it

Wings need quality defenders given that they really have young guys signed for next season plus Osterle. They can afford Staal type ones at forward but they need good partners for their young Dmen.

An interesting tidbit I heard on the radio is that New Jersey was interested in The Wild's RFA Kevin Fiala? The Wild are gonna get cap killed the next couple of years with the expensive buyouts of Parise and Suter and likely can't re-sign the guy, so the Devils would be willing to part with their high 1st rounder to get him! What do you think of this? Think it's worth it for one or both teams? 🤔

Nemeth back to DET costs what? 2.5 mil cap hit at 2 more seasons after this one. Somewhere between a 2nd and 3rd round pick attached to him?

It'd take a 2nd+. You gave us a 2nd for 1 year of Staal who is actually servicable and filled a role in Detroit unlike Nemeth who was complete garbage during his time here and wouldn't have a role where the Wings could extract further value from. Nemeth with 2 years at 2.5 is also much less appealing for Detroit than Staal's 1 year 5M was at the time.

The thread title doesn't see to match what you have written. Like why would a cap dump from another team get any quality back from Detroit?

Yzerman is entering year 4 of his tenure with Detroit. He's basically burnt the team down since he arrived, basically not banking on any of Holland's draft picks (anyone selected pre 2019) to hold a key spot on the roster when they return to the playoffs in a couple of years time.

The issue for the Wings, is that I don't see them being good enough to make the PO next season, because of their holes, as well as the quality of the top Eastern teams. Wings finished 26 points behind the Caps for the final PO spot. Nash, the final WC in the West still finished 23 points ahead of the Wings. So, that's a lot of points to make up.

Wings main issue is their Defence as they are very young and it's important to support their young Dmen with good solid partners to develop them.

They can't just take a cap dump type LHD similar to a Staal trade. They legitimately need 2 top 4 LHD.
Reason 1 to pair with Seider as their top pairing
Reason 2 to shelter 19 year old Evindsson, assuming he's on the roster next season. Otherwise, who is Evindsson going to play with? The other 2 RHD as the roster sits now are Hronek who is weak defensively and Lindstrom who hasn't established himself as a NHL regular. If Hronek is going to be a part of the wings long term, he needs a solid partner to help him out defensively.

Personally, they probably need to do another Leddy type trade over a Staal type trade. Move out a pick instead of gaining a pick to add a veteran who has 1-2 years left on their contract. Wings are not in a position to sign quality players without overpaying for term or dollars.

Canucks fan coming in peace, legitimately asking, given his -12 for the season, is Lindstrom going to get a long look at 3rd RD or would the Wings look for a solid 3rd pair right side guy? If you guys want a stable RHD to partner with Edvinsson (if he's to be sheltered and Hronek/ Lindstrom can't be that partner) would Poolman be someone of possible interest? He's 28 years old, 6'2", right shot and stable (not going to score much, but if you're looking for a Hamonic-type who can hold the fort in their own end for cheap he could be your guy; heck we'll even eat $250k so it's only $2.25 mil per season if you guys don't demand a major sweetener).

Poolman has his own health issues right now. Migraines, so I don't see him moving because of that health concern. Similar to Patrick, would need a season back to show that it's not an issue for him.

For the Wings, they need to figure out who is going to partner with their young Dmen. Staal is 35 and should be a 3rd pairing. Osterle is a 3rd pairing guy whom they have under contract. Dekeyser is a UFA and not returning. Leddy was traded.

They really need to do a couple of Leddy type trades vs take on cap dumps on Defence.

Hronek is not good defensively to be pair with a 19 year old Evindsson. Seider can play big minutes, but is going to need help. You can probably shelter Evindsson/Lindstrom pairing if you had to. But, Wings need to upgrade the backend.

They can take cap dumps at forward, but Not on the blueline if they hope to develop their young players properly.

Hypothetically, presuming his headaches improve, would there be interest then? Alternatively, if defensive help in the forward ranks would be of interest, we also have a lightly used Jason Dickinson available.

You guys love Scandis right?

We'll give you Hagelin and Eller as a package for FREE. The negative value of Hagelin is countered by the positive of value of Eller.

Did I mention they are Scandis? They are pure viking.
Oh no, not Hagelin and Eller, Detroit please don't take either of them. They are the heart and soul of the Capitals, our team would surely crumble and Detroit would be Cup bound. Since you made the offer on behalf of the entire Caps fan base I guess we have to follow through if Detroit were to accept it now.

Don’t really know anything about Poolman at all, but I wouldn’t really judge anybody on Detroit by their plus minus lol.

I agree with the assessment that Detroit is likely moving beyond being a cap dump destination.

I could see them doing that type of move if they were getting a player they think could bounce back and at least be a useful player even if overpaid.

Monahan seems like a logical fit.

His hips are shot. The guy was mostly a 4th liner this year and his best years were with Gaudreau. I don’t know if there’s a bounce back for Monahan, especially in Detroit.

Detroit only started this rebuild when Yzerman got here. Before that Holland was building a Blockbuster Video.

Yah to be fair I think that thought process is solely designed to attack KH.

The minute we drafted top 10, sold assets at the deadline, and didnt attract or pursue top free agents etc our rebuild started.

How effective it was is another discussion altogether

The multiple posts of Mrazek and a 1st is weird.

If Toronto refused to trade their 1st for a TDL acquisition, they’re not doing it to dump Mrazek.

If you want a first, look toward Monahan.

Why would Monahan cost Calgary a 1st? He only has one more year on his deal and is not buyout proof (although buyout may not be option due to injury).
If people think it is like Marleau, it is not because it is not a 35+ contract.
I don't think Mrazek or Monahan cost the teams a 1 first to unload, but I think Monahan costs less due to less term.

pretty accurate, if anyone is hoping for a bounceback on him don't. I think Gagner is a better player at this point.
Though I think Gagner is sneaky underrated.

No. Its meant to point out that Yzerman and Holland build completely different teams, and most of the assets that KH drafted aren't part of Yzerman's long term plans.

So if in 2 years a new GM is brought in after 8 top 10 picks in a row would that indicate the start of a rebuild in your opinion?

You would actually tell fans that no in fact we were not rebuilding in 2021?

*** I see you said "this" rebuild not "the" rebuild. My bad.***

Wings are now entering the post cap dump stage. I fully expect this team to compete for a playoff spot next season.

Yzerman can’t be held to what Holland did. Yzerman can’t let himself get caught up on the 6 years of no playoffs when he’s been there for just 3.

But he has to now balance asset accumulation against prospect development as his guys are making their way to the nhl.

It might make sense to take a CAP dump only at forward and then basically flip those assets to acquire veterans to support the Dmen.
