Two veterans trying to get a roster spot, do you think they will get one? I dont, but then again we have jim benning as the decision maker, so who knows.

Both were drafted in the top 10(both went 9th overall) of their respective draft class. However still have not met expectations and have lot to prove on the ice.
Ruutu has 6 30+ point seasons in his career, the most he scored is 57 points in 2010-2011. He has not even gotten close to those numbers the past 5 seasons however. Sheppard is a bottom 6 guy.

what do you guys say?

Update:

A third guy was signed to a PTO named Kevin Carr. A 26 year old ECHL Goalie. Undrafted.

Why exactly? Honestly curious

Ruutu's recent seasons have just been awful. Sheppard has been unable to crack an NHL most years. Both aren't young and probably are not getting any better. Better off filling any holes within the organization or signing someone like Fontaine or Versteeg that actually can offer you third line help. Never hurts to give these 2 a shot but unless they turn heads in camp their recent history at NHL level suggests they wont be useful.

Ruutu was better in their primes, but he's a long way from it. I like the Sheppard PTO though. You can look at pretty much any team in the league and find a player worse than Sheppard

Ruutu was far superior in their primes.

Stats may not look too too far off, but Ruutu was so much more than just his stats.
His still of play caught up to him though and injuries have severely hampered him.

Sheppard doesn't do much above average but he's good for a fourth line role. I don't understand why he couldn't find a contract last year.

I mean, no harm no foul offering Ruutu a PTO, but if he gets a contract....
He basically peaked in 2004 in the World cup tournament.

Sheppard could probably still play in a 4th line role. But given ruutu's injuries over the years I would be surprised if he could survive camp much less be in the roster opening night.

Clearly just placeholders for the preseason games while a good chunk of the team is at the WCOH.

Ruutu is pretty much done. Sheppard was OK with the Rangers, wasn't he?

AV didn't seem to care for Sheppard and didn't use him very much. I thought he was a good bottom-6 player. I would've preferred to have him on the third line, and I would have expected around 30 points.

At this point, that ship may have sailed, but I think he still has the potential to be an asset in the bottom-6.

Ruutu isn't looking great these days, but he was a player I was high on a few years back.

Canucks have a bunch of guys playing in the World Cup of Hockey and they'll need a rest....Sheppard and Ruutu are exhibition and training camp fodder...too bad about Ruutu....career totally derailed by injuries...Sheppard with decent wheels, but hands of stone.

I thought Sheppard was pretty good with the Sharks and Rangers in 14-15, I actually wanted the Pens to sign him that summer before they got Cullen.

Ruutu is cooked though, I can't see him earning a contract.
