Because part of being a good fourth liner is being cheap.
The hockey world is littered with plenty of players with the same skill level. They all would be happy to get the NHL minimum salary to play on the 4th line. If not, you move along to the next willing player....as I said, there are plenty of players out there with the same skill level.

so someone tweeted his advanced stats in terms of shot suppression happens to be the highest in the NHL.

all that said, that was when he was with Dallas Stars. At that point his one weakness that needs improvement is face offs. So at the time he was a very good pick up by Benning. I think its still a solid pick up by the Canucks.
He would be if we had solid defensive centers so he could fit in better as a defensive winger on that line

Given how good his defense is and his versatility to be able to play centre in pinch, all he would need to produce to make him a fairly useful asset is around 30p/82g, which I thought he was capable of coming into the season. Having seen him for half a season I don't think he's got great hands but is also a little snakebit

Jay Beagle 21 GP 1 Pts, $3M
Antoine Roussel 34 GP 5 Pts, $3M
Jason Dickinson 40 GP 5 Pts, $2.7M

Jim Benning is amazing. I don't even know how well you could do this if you tried.
JBenning went to his grave as an NHL GM somehow believing that these players could somehow replicate their success in Vancouver that they had playing for high-end teams like Washington and Dallas.

But the NHL is littered with players who look good playing for a contender; but stink out the joint playing for a bottom-feeder. The agents for some of these guys are sure going to miss picking up the phone and calling Jimbo this off-season.

I honestly have never seen this guy have a single strong game. Seems like another Brandon Sutter.
Sutter has better games than Dickinson. Sutter isn't a great playmaker and doesn't wow anyone with his skillset, but he has his moments of being a decent player. If Jimbo didn't pay the world for him, he'd be fine. There's been one, maybe two times that Dickinson has done anything of note. Unfortunately, for me, he's another 4th line player that Jimbo overpaid for.

I hate Sutter but he was twice the player Dick is. He could score some goals and he was good on PK. Dicky is almost useless.

Agreed. When we acquired Sutter, he missed 3 games in his previous 5 seasons. Injuries since then (and Covid) basically ruined him. At his best, he isn't a good playmaker but he manages to score a similar number of goals regardless of who he plays with. He wasn't an elite shutdown centre but he was fundamentally good.

He also wasn't exactly playing with great teammates. in 17-18 his most frequent linemates were Darren Archibald and Markus Granlund and played heavy defensive minutes. He wasn't the same after his injury riddled year in 18-19.

Yeah, the main thing the 4th line can contribute is not doing damage on the ice or on the cap. Take up ice-time when the betters need a rest well enough that no one scores on you and anything above that is bonus, and if you can squeeze in some niche roles (an enforcer, face-off specialist, pest) in that line then great.

At any given time there are the Spencer Martins and Tyler Mottes of the world, players who aren't great but could hold their own if only given a chance, and there are more of them than there are roster spots. Plus, fools like Benning will crave pedigree over performance so these players get lost in the shuffle and are an opportunity for shrewd managers.

Find them on the cheap because others don't value them and they'll take nearly any contract in exchange for an opportunity, and let them over perform because when they do and their price goes up (see Motte) then you can replace them with another diamond in the rough and just rinse and repeat.

But never, ever pay premium dollars for them, this is one of the ways you can create arbitrage opportunities to make cap to hold on to your stars and add depth.

He suppresses shots against? What else?

Fully healthy, who do you kick off the 4th line and replace with Dickinson? Lammiko? Highmore? Nope. Motte? LOL no.

He's playing the minutes he does because we've proscribed a 3rd line role for him by creating a gaping hole in the lineup at 3C (now 3W) for him to occupy. Effectively, if he's on the 3rd line, it functionally becomes the 4th line by his very presence.

Sutter has had far, far better seasons as a Canuck (center). Nevermind games. His body unfortunately is just broken
