I liked every Dutch person I ever met, which was several hundred, before I moved to the Netherlands. Safe to say that impression presented by individual/small group of Dutch abroad vs behaviour of Dutch in the Netherlands is a vastly different story. My impression of Dutch society has been greatly downgraded since living in it.

Amsterdam is a cool city, but it's also not the entirety of the Netherlands, believe it or not.

I'm also well aware of when Sprong moved to Canada. You form a lot of life-long habits from your associations and nature/nurture in the first 8 years of your life.

I hope he succeeds, but I expect to see relatively constant offensive effort and decent progressing to lazy defensive effort every 10 games followed by a scratch or other 'message-sending' event.

You might think that the disparity between different Dutch people he experienced would have taught him to not lump them all together by nationality but no, by age 8 poor Daniel Sprong was doomed to a life of false-superiority.

In the words of Tocchet, Sprong has 'had a good camp'. But his defensive zone coverage is still a 'work in progress' according to the coach.

If he can succeed in teaching this guy how to play on the defensive side of the puck, he'll have to use all of his 'coach of year' skillset. There's a reason why Sprong is on his sixth team in six seasons.

Most of this is common to north/west/developed Europe (can’t speak to Scandinavia, but it is certainly France, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria). It’s also Italy, which is ironic because some of those countries are also racist against Italians. It’s also a bit of the UK; I mean they left the EU because of immigration issues.

It was hard living in these countries (Paris for me) during COVID but you have to see the good too - like the food, ease of travel, and healthcare. I’d also say potentially safer if you’re white and live in a nice neighborhood - which is also something you could say for nearly the entire world. I struggle to identify other places where you can buy multi-million dollar real estate just to look at bums. drug dealers, and gang activity on your corner (maybe California, but I never lived in the U.S.)

Everywhere has pluses and minuses and if you’re going to criticize one place, you should also look objectively at your own culture, which I assume is Canadian.

While we’re certainly more inclusive and less racist, we’re just as arrogant, but in a much more preachy way. For example, it’s pretty easy for us to criticize others when we live in a country that is naturally highly immune to illegal immigration.

What I really dislike is how unnecessarily complicated we make everything. While we’re polite, it’s very superficial and we’re super passive aggressive. Like any northern developed country, we are generally cold, individualistic people with few deep connections and weak family units. We’re also so obsessed with not being the U.S. we’ll never do anything to meaningfully reform healthcare or address crime. As someone with young kids, these are important considerations for me.

Of course I’m speaking in very general terms and relative to other countries, there’s plenty of exceptions for everything I mentioned.

In sum, I’d go back to live in the European countries listed despite the drawbacks.
