I'm ok with everything else we did today but I just can't understand this deal. This is a 1.5m player and we gave him nearly double. Why?
because he’s 6’4 and is right handed

Just read these comments from Jets fans when it was announced

Trade, FA, Rumour Thread

But how many of them have 200 IQ like Jet Black? If Jet Black is sees something in Poolman that compares him goodly to our previous steady physical minute munching defenseman on long-term deals like Sbisa and Gudbranson, then for sure he will lead us to barely making the playoffs just like Sbisa and Gudbranson did for us before!

Can't wait for Poolman to prove you haters and nerds wrong!

I'm just scratching my head how this contract came about. Surely Jim should have started at say $2M x 2 years at best. How does that get escalated to $2.5M x 4 years? I mean, a negotiation should go from that starting point to either an extra $500K/year or an extra year if you really, really want him.

Some Jets fans had nicknamed him "Pooman" after he was getting lit up in a top-4 role. He's a good guy though. Better than Myers in his own zone though fwiw.

I know it’s coming from Jimbo but consider he’s 6’4 and shoots right and knowing how most nhl teams operate
It’s pretty believable that Jimbo goes into a bidding war

Pretty sure he's 6'2. At least according to HockeyDB and wikipedia.

These are the kind of depth players you want to keep on their toes with 1-2 year contracts and make them earn the next one.

4 years would be insane even at a reasonable cap hit. Just total idiocy.

That's incorrect, he's actually 6'4 as it states on his Eliteprospects page.

You can also see him playing here and standing next to Laine. He is not a 6'2 player:

I wonder if there's anything else you could do in that situation? I guess you could just move on because it's not what you want to pay?

2.5 million cap hit over 4 years is fine for a 28 year old player that will play in his prime. If he was over 30 years old then it wouldn't make sense

I'm guessing most teams we're offering 2-3 years around 2MM and we stepped up with the 4th. Just like with Beagle and Ferland.

Fair enough. That's nice if he's 6'4, but I think he got an inflated contract because of it.
