I actually really like Petey's game tonight and against Edm.
He's skating really hard and he's got 100% confidence. He's trying things out there... deke's with speed.... he didnt do that when he was low confidence mode last season.
It's a great sign. He's shooting, he's making great passes while under pressure to. That's always a sign of when a player is in the groove. If your not feeling it, and under-pressure you dump it in or hesitate and lose it... Petey just pivots, uses the boards, waits then fires a pass and releases pressure and the Canucks maintain possession. Love it.
If you think he's playing poorly, you need to really look at his game closely. He's killin it.... and if you see him get stuffed on a deke.. that isnt a bad thing. Jagr, Datsyuk etc got stuffed all the time..but they were always trying because they always had the puck. They were driving play forward, and if they lost the puck and it got knocked into the corner they were battling for it back and always pushing play the right direction. Petey is doing that.
He's also showing a great two-way game. He's skating miles out there. I'll see him back helping the D and then he's digging in the corners trying to create O, then he's high slot.... then he's the one holding the puck in the neutral zone buying time while his linemates get off so we don't lose possession of the puck back to Philly.
Based on his play against Edm and Philly, if he played at this level for the rest of the year, he'll be north of a PPG and have a handful of highlight reel goals after 82 games.

I won't mind that, but he did have a role on the PP. Whereas Highmore's ice time can be given to Pod

Alls well that ends well I guess but damn when is Green going to learn that putting pressure on the puck when the other team pulls the goalie is a lot better than standing back in a shell. That's just letting the other team work the puck around as they wish. We've lost so many games over the years late with him the same lame style of play.

Good

Myers - started bad as usual but then came on as the game went on. Had an excellent third period.

Pettersson - getting it back together. Not nailing the opportunities as well as he was in his rookie season but shows signs of getting close to that level.

Garland - probably our best player. So much piss and vinegar. Controlled the offensive zone at times. Getting him linked up with the right line mates is going to be important

Demko - would likely got blown out early if it hadn't been for Demko. Unfortunate on some of the goals

Poolman - 5 on5 was solid . Not sure he is your principle penalty killer and needs to expand his zone of coverage in those situations. Had a lot of bad luck with bounces in this one but was good eliminating his check from play and moving the puck.

Bad

Chaisson - Hirsh was clearly rooting for him (might have been his agent the way he was going on) but he should never be on any NHL team's first PP unit. I guess if you could play the whole game in the offensive zone Chaisson wouldn't hurt you too much. However, asking him to play acceptable hockey in any other zone is asking too much.

Others

Horvath - didn't really have his legs going. Had trouble in his own zone and is again off to building his minus totals. Should not have been out late and when he was just got standing around. You understand the reason in that he is the only one winning faceoffs but even here wasn't winning crucial last minute draws. Not sure he matches well with Garland. We'll see.

Dickinson - must be better on faceoffs. Didn't contribute much in this game. Shows potential at times but not asserting himself on the play

Pearson - played very well up to this point but little weaker tonite. Always gives you the effort but, especially in the early going, was missing passes and getting jammed out of the play. Better in the third when the team got some continuity into their play.

Miller - could be said to be bad (especially in the first) Way too many turnovers and erratic and sloppy passes. Great shoot out move does not erase a lot the bungled plays throughout most of the game

Hughes - little better in his end and quicker moving the puck. Still think he is overplayed and as result tries to take rests in the play.

Podkolzin - that was great shot and something he can build off of. However, outside of that, Podkolzin was prone to too many mistakes and blown coverages and was rightly sat when the Canucks were defending the lead. This seems the same situation as when he was in the KHL. Coaches pulled him out to secure wins and will probably see the Canucks do the same.

Lammikko - has some good attributes. Skates well enough to get pressure on the puck and still get back to be in good position defensively. Doesn't over carry the puck. Moves it quickly or dumps it in. His line had some good shifts in the third were they kept the puck in the offensive zone. However, needs to up his faceoff % (too bad Malhotra wasn't around to help him here)

Overall the Canucks still need to nurse home wins better. I don't like Green's system here and it maybe an illustration of Green's stubbornness that it persists in it. Yet it was good to see that the Canucks do have a number of players that can provide some offense.

Podkolzin was solid before his goal.

Podkolzin was solid before his goal. Talking out your ass.

He was very poor. Same puck management issues from the preseason that everyone is seeing but you. Multiple turnovers and poor clearances and was taken off the top line after one period. Granted everyone was poor but he was a big reason why that line got killed in the first.

The goal was great and I hated benching him after it but it was a lone positive for him tonight.

Anyone else find it weird that it’s 2 games now where QH bobbles the puck at the blue line on the PP trying to do too much cussing a breakaway the other way ?

both were stopped but if both went in….

doesn’t Nolan Baumgartner have any say or does he just stand there as a figurehead

This is becoming a ridiculous habbit that hughes needs to get a grip on. Just keep it simple my god.
