Depending on who it is, Willander/Lekkerimaki and their 1st would be the biggest assets. But it sounds like they may be looking to try to get a somewhat distressed asset for less.

Willander would be very unlikely to be moved, though.

Van used the Rangers’ first to get a top four D man. They’d need to use their own 2025 first as an asset, and that doesn’t make sense unless the guy coming back is top six and mid twenties. Talk on the “Left” coast is about getting a guy who is likely cheap to acquire due to contract and other factors limiting value. Josh Norris’s name comes up out here.

Likely nothing that would warrant serious consideration. The most enticing pieces, they won't offer.
The problem with those mid 20's impact forwards is that everyone wants them, from contenders to rebuilding teams. They're not often being sold unless there's a compelling non-hockey related reason (contract, attitude, etc.).

Agreed. The 30-35/36 pieces are usually the ones that are available more. Acquiring someone in their mid 20's and who is trending well requires a very deep hockey trade (2/1 or 1/1 type)

If you are looking for an impact guy in his mid 20's, that will require a hockey trade. 1/1 type trade. Trust me, the Habs are looking to add as well and we have two 1st rounders as well. If you find a potential 2C in their 20's, you will have to fight us over him.

I’ve thought a lot about this and I think Tage Thompson is a good fit.
He represents a lot of what miller represented, is a nice threat that would help replace some shooting that would be lost if Boesser leaves.
Also, Buffalo has its defense in whatever condition it is in, but you wouldn’t think they’d be needing Vancouver’s prized prospect in Willander.
Still, it would be expensive-ish and I don’t think I’m able to guess at the deal. Seems like Buffalo should be able to get one of the bigger returns if they move a guy like Tage Thompson. Sure would be convenient if by chance Buffalo wanted to sign Boesser and he was okay with that, but being so close to ufa, really have to guess any player would use that to their benefit.

You might not like it but that gets you someone in the 30-35/36 years. Someone staring their prime and trending well? Good luck with that. Not impossible but very very difficult and you will have to fight other teams over it. If that guy is a 2C, the Habs will be all over this as well.

Sabres are not trading Thompson. If they do, it's a 1/1 hockey blockbuster and you will not be able to acquire with futures. Sabres are not going to start another rebuild

There is nothing to discuss when it comes to Thompson. You guys aren't trading the pieces necessary for him and we don't want your spare parts, prospects and/or picks. Makes zero sense for Buffalo.

I think that’s why a guy like Norris comes up. I’ve heard Zegras mentioned too. These are guys who have top six skills but their value is lower because of other factors. Much like Chytl. Sure top six skills, but injury concerns limit value. Norris has a contract and injury concerns. Zegras has all those “rumours” about other stuff. Guys I don’t think the Habs would be interested in, imo. They’d be looking for sure players, especially if spending like suggested.
And this typically happens once or twice a year. It's not so much a matter of targeting... let's randomly pick Nick Suzuki, and stacking the trade value until Montreal agrees, as it is being patient and waiting for such a player to come available for a variety of reasons like you suggest. At which point it's more a matter of being a destination the player wants to go and having the cap space to fit him, and pretty much every team has the assets to complete such a trade.
It's completely unpredictable, but overall a pretty reliable process. A team just needs to have the patience to wait it out and not immediately go to UFA spending the cap on expensive middling talent.
I’m not sure why Norris’ name is coming up with the Senators in the playoffs currently. Unless it’s an upgrade they won’t be subtracting from their current roster.

Why are people mentioning Willander/Lekkerimaki??? If you don't know other teams prospects outside their top 2 maybe don't propose hypothetical trades.

Miller is toxic and wanted out, Debrincat also wanted out. The first time DeBrincat got dealt, he returned a 7th overall pick++. If Van can find a similar situation they won't have to pay as much, but typically mid 20's impact forwards aren't dealt for so little as the two examples you're giving.
Saw a rumor a few days ago about an Anthony Cirelli and a pick for Brock Boeser and Conor Garland trade. Doubt there was any validity to it, though. Don't think TB is inclined to move him, although this is probably right around his peak value...
