this team is very talent devoid. again, if you lose boeser, this team is three top six forwards short.

you do not pick and choose. any of ehlers, rossi, norris, whoever. you have to focus on just getting guys.

If mgmt doesn’t think Raty can keep up to the pace of play, I could see him getting dealt in a package.

I like him; one of the few who can win FOs and still quite young.

But if they want to play fast and he can’t keep up with the faster teams, might want to deal him before he becomes a declining asset.

Team is in a tough spot because they could be really grasping at straws this summer.

I don’t see any reason why a impact FA signs here so mgmt is going to need to be creative.
He’s eligible for waivers next year isn’t he? I am not sure he’s worth anything other than a similarly situated waiver-eligible player. I lean towards keeping players like Raty and see if he takes another step forward next season. Worst case scenario he gets lost to waivers.

Becoming a beggar for talent after moving Miller doesn't speak well to the talent they had even with Miller here....

You're right through, just take any Top6 capable player you can. They'll have to chase it.

Hughes - Hronek
MP3 - Myers
Jr - Mancini
Forbort (UFA) - Willander

Demko
Lankinen

Defense and goaltending look good, just need to sign some 9th/10th defenseman, because after those 8 guys our options are Mynio and Kudryavstev, no other defenseman signed for next year.

But we have a big forward issue right now.

Just categorizing them:
1st Line player: Pettersson
Top 6er: Boeser (UFA)
2nd liner: Debrusk
Middle 6er: Garland, Suter (UFA), Chytil
3rd liner: Hoglander
Bottom 6er: Blueger, Joshua, Sherwood, DOC,
4th liner:
13th forward, 14th+: Karlsson (may be upped one, been decent recently), Aman
No idea, hope for some good progression: Lekkerimaki, Raty

I think we should move out Chytil for whatever we can, he isn't a 2nd line center, too injury prone and I'd rather resign Suter to something less than he is making. He's also 25 so I imagine his buyout would be really cheap, worst case.

Sign Suter to something like 3.75x4
Forbort to 1x1
Willander ELC

Leaves us about 13.1 million to sign some top end forwards. Could get like 2 Debrusk type players or try to go for a star. Can also resign Boeser if it's 8 or under (unlikely??).

Hoglander ?? - Pettersson - ?
Debrusk - ? - Lekkerimaki ??
Joshua- Suter - Garland
DOC - Blueger - Sherwood
Others: Aman, Karlsson, Raty
UFA: Boeser

I wonder if we could get like Brock Nelson, Mikael Granlund or Duchene on a 7.5x2 or something like that? Jack the dollars to keep the term low, Don't know if we would wanna do more than 2 years on guys like them with Hughes expiring in 2 years. Then sign another winger around 5m.

Tocchet was speaking the other day on finding chemistry for Lekkerimaki with line mates. The players on this team have lacked chemistry for so long. 6-40-9 and "the greatest 3rd line ever" have been the only successful lines. Joshua-Suter-Garland are the highest minutes this season and they are 73rd most in the league.
Debrusk-Suter-Boeser lately has been scoring above expected lately but Suter's 43% on draws makes that hard to keep him there with those two and he's never going to pace to a 2nd line scoring rate.

Suter's value looks great now but as soon as he's getting paid a few million a year. That value is far far less.

Torts fired.

Tocchet?
Hot damn, posted Frank's rumour about that the other day. Franks an ok rumour guy, he should stick to that and skip the player analysis.

You do have to wonder how it's got down the last 10 games of the year with no extension.

I wonder if the Canucks go for Trevor Zegras, seems like a good set up man for Lekk, I think it would be a good gamble he only has one hear left on his contract

The "top six forward" thing is a bit of a construct - he's performed at the same level as Jake Debrusk has this season, and nobody seems to think that the Canucks hit a massive home run last season when they signed DeBrusk. Pius Suter has also performed at a similar level this season and would come a lot cheaper as well as giving the Canucks positional flexibility.

It's extremely hard to find scoring and the Canucks are in a tough environment with the cap rising so quickly, but the rose tinted glasses on this player should come off. Him getting to 40 goals is very unlikely to happen again. It is really not all that hard to replace his ES scoring, and Lekkerimaki looks set be an upgrade as a PP trigger option next season. The Canucks have a healthy cupboard of assets to acquire additional help should the opportunity present itself.

do not want horvat back. stupid speculation by the media. yes he was good for us. but such a soft player. IMO. never really protected his teammates.

I would take Horvat back in a heartbeat and pay solid assets to do so...........he more or less fits the mold of being what we need for a 2c - someone who is decent defensively who is great on Face offs and brings some offense.

Should have traded Miller at that time and kept Horvat....we would be far better off at this time. For those who say, "well we ended up with Hronek in that trade"...pretty sure NYI would have taken Miller instead of Horvat if offered.

At the time it was the right move. Miller was and still is a player with a much higher ceiling then Horvat. real easy to go back in time and say "we should have done this" Revisiting the trade up until this season and the way things went off the rails I think most would have agreed with this sentiment.

Let's not forget Miller was an ABSOLUTE BEAST for us..........and accomplished things Horvat could only dream of. Shame it ended the way it did but let's cut with this should have done this bs........

Tortorella Firing
  • Was a wild couple of days for the Flyers
  • LeBrun interviewed Briere on Tuesday and asked about Tortorella’s future; was told that they’ll discuss it after the saeson
  • No sense that he was getting fired
  • Story and situation changed in the last 48 hours
  • His post-game comments after the loss to Toronto were part of the reasoning
  • Were told that Tortorella made comments to management, behind the scenes, in the last 24 hours that contributed to this
  • Sense is that his public and private comments lead to his early firing
  • Was never the gameplan for management; wanted to figure out the coaching future in the off-season
Tocchet
  • Canucks desperately want to extend Tocchet
  • The opening in Philadelphia doesn’t affect anything going on, right now, with Tocchet
  • Tocchet wants to wait until after the season to discuss an extension
  • Is the only coach in the NHL on an expiring deal but has an option year on his contract
  • Will be a hot name rumoured to the Flyers due to his history with the organization
Coaching Search
  • Will not start looking until the off-season; will do a thorough search
  • Joel Quenneville has been cleared to coach again
  • David Carle is a hot name after the last two World Juniors
  • Brad Shaw will be considered a candidate
Bruins’ and Blackhawks’ Coaches
  • Both have interim coaches and will wait until the off-season to evaluate
Sabres
  • Intention is to have Lindy Ruff back for the final year of his contract
Rangers
  • Peter Laviolette has another year on his contract
  • Doesn’t have a read on the coaching situation there

I view JT's time here, the same way I view Bertuzzi's time here (not to the extremes, of course). A period of "ABSOLUTE BEAST", but in the end it was the exact volatile nature of the player that made him great that also destroyed the team.
