Gretzky, Hall?

It very rarely happens, Lafleur? They used to be owned and there was no FA around or they are kept until their value is diminished.

So like the OEL buyout this could be historic too. It is that or he walks away and the team really has nothing in return because they HAVE to get anything before he walks.

If he was a draft pick or a RFA that got an offer sheet the would get quite a haul in return.

I think the fact you had to go back to the 70s for an example, shows that it indeed, rarely happens.

Chytil buyout numbers not looking too bad
Hate to be cynical, but I'm not entirely convinced that the Canucks didn't research the 'buy-out numbers; for Chytil, before they even acquired him.

I think with Chytil's injury history, they were hoping for the best; but planning for the worst. And now that basically the worst has happened (another concussion), the Canucks will need his cap room. And he's still only 25, the buy-out numbers will be pretty modest.

Of course it will leave the team with a black-hole down the middle. With EP40's status as a premier number one center in serious doubt; and Suter likely leaving as a UFA, the Canucks have some major off-season work to do.

Only Bennett is a center from those 3 and there are alot of miles on him for a long term contract.
Initially I was open to the idea of going after Bennett but I've grown to hate the idea. He doesn't check many boxes. He isn't fast. Doesn't win Faceoffs. Isn't great defensively. Doesn't produce for what he'll cost. The only thing I really like about him is he'd bring some sand paper.

I'd much rather go after Ehlers.

Ehlers is not a top line impact player like Marner. Bennett will get paid because of his playoff performances or he'll stay in Florida for cheaper.

Ehlers is the type of player you target when you're not in on the biggest fish.

Ie. Canucks were trying for Guentzel, missed, signed Debrusk.
I would say the drop off between Marner and Ehlers is considerably less than Guentzel/Debrusk.

The difference between Ehlers and Debrusk is that Ehlers is one of the best transitional forwards in the league. He’s one of the most, if not, the most efficient scorer averaging 16 minutes or less over the last 3 years. His usage in Winnipeg has always been strange. His analytics suggest he’s a top line player but doesn’t actually get used like one. Unlike Scheifele and Connor who get absolutely ventilated defensively with some of the poorest xGA in the league essentially every year (which is why a two way guy like Vilardi on their line works much better), Ehlers doesn’t have the same sort of hindrances and oddly enough really doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses or flaws aside from playoff disappearances for whatever reason (not the only Jets player) which always makes you wonder why he doesn’t get more PP opportunity at the very least to make up for his decreased 5v5 usage.

If I were to compare the type of player we’d be getting in terms of age, position, % of cap, and overall impact it would pretty similar to the Hawks signing Marian Hossa in 2009. I would not dare compare Ehlers to prime Hossa, but a 29/30 year old Hossa is exactly the type of player we’d be getting in Ehlers. Ehlers won’t have the same defensive impact but he won’t hurt you 5v5 much in the same way.

Marner would be the ultimate prize but Ehlers isn’t a Debrusk level of player (I know you probably don’t mean to compare them but I thought I’d just point this out). He also doesn’t need someone to carry him.

Ehlers would be the perfect partner for Pettersson.

Ehlers has the skating to last into his mid to late 30s its the 170lbs that freaks me out. Also will still need to address the C position so its certainly a either or for him or Brock.
And who takes our best net front position guys spot on the PP?
Also does Ehlers now take Lekkerimakis future spot which will be the old Miller flank?
You woukd think that big an investment would have to be a big part of PP1.

No doubt his transitions would help immensely especially given his talent to actially make something out of them vs DOC and Chytil

The #1 quest has to be a good C though
Way more vital than another 170lb winger

I remember having the 6th overall and very excited to be following the Canucks draft for such a high pick. Obviously we hadn't had a high pick in a long time besides surprise trade pick Bo the year before and not since social media forums had I became so interested in the off ice actions of the team. I remember very much wanting to draft Ehlers with Nylander second on my list.

The thing I remember most was that he was a guy who could play in any situation due to his speed. I was impressed not only that he was a Captain, he was a very good character guy. Not to mention he could PK, was fast as lightning, and put up insanely good numbers in both back to back seasons and the corresponding playoffs. He also spoke 6 languages so he's a dedicated and learned individual.

Ehlers also played pro in the Swiss league at 16. As a result of the 2012-13 lockout he became linemates with Patrick Kane and Tyler Seguin. Both had a huge impact and convinced him to come play junior in N.A. where he ripped it up for two years winning rookie of the year and personality of the year, finishing second in player of the year his second season.

He is known for his speed, skating, puck handling, and playmaking. Exactly what the doctor ordered. In addition his junior playoff performances were simply outstanding. I would argue his pro playoffs are more linked to poor team performance than simply being bad at playoffs. Very poor sample size and situation. This should be our top priority. I would give him Boeser's money plus throw in a mil or two for good measure. Can we trade for his rights? I think that extra year could be a valuable bargaining chip if so.

Following another successful season, Ehlers and the Mooseheads qualified for the 2015 President's Cup playoffs where they met with the Shawinigan Cataractes in the first round. Ehlers scored the series-winning goal in overtime of Game 7 to lift the Mooseheads to the second round. In Game 1 of their second-round series against the Moncton Wildcats, Ehlers recorded four goals and an assist to help the Mooseheads take a 1–0 series lead. He finished the postseason with 31 points over 14 playoff games.

Ehlers and the Jets faced off against the St. Louis Blues in round one of the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs but fell in six games. When their postseason concluded, it was revealed that Ehlers had fractured his leg after blocking a shot at the end of Game 5.

-a good read through of his career and playoff history

I agree he'd be a great compliment to Petey. 8x9 or am I crazy?

I don’t think I’m saying anything crazy here, but what an absolute disaster of a target if you’re planning to buyout the main piece within a year or two.

It’s terrible that he’s had so many concussion problems, and I hope he has an amazing healthy life, but not holding onto JT Miller until the off-season, when the centre market is literally Sam Bennett, is just, and let’s be honest here, bad asset management.

Mancini being good
And getting Mpetey with the first rounder, is nice, but still not nearly enough for a guy like JT Miller.

Of course we don’t know what happened behind the scenes, but could they really not have handled it for another 30 games?

I guess it completely depends on what happened.

And I’m sorry for being negative

There are 25 teams that have more captain than us, Ehlers it’s going to get 10,000,000+, and I have no doubt in my mind.

Unless he stays with Florida, I can see something around 7 million

I like Ehlers. I'm a little torn if I'd prefer him or Boeser given Ehlers will cost more.

Regular season Ehlers will be better, he adds speed & play driving ability we need. But then in playoffs/clutch moments Brock is better.

One gets you in the other gets your through. And we need both haha.

If they moved Chytil they'd probably have money for both but then they also need a C.. it's tough, were not in a great spot.

Wonder if a team like Chicago or San Jose would take him given the cap is going up (to reach the floor), and he is still young enough if there's any chance he's able to put all this behind him. As doubtful as that looks.

I mean we need both.

Ehlers might be 180lbs on a good day but again he really doesn’t play like a soft perimeter forward you’d expect from someone who weighs around there. He’s built sturdy like Hoglander and plays a bit of a grittier game.

Like I said, there really aren’t any glaring *flaws* to his game. Doesn’t need to be babysat, doesn’t need to be carried, doesn’t need to be sheltered, clearly doesn’t need to be over coached, very low maintenance, won’t hurt you defensively even though he’s not some sort of two way defensive beast. Would it have been nice if he was 200lbs? Sure, but for a player like him, 200lbs is just extra weight he doesn’t need.

$9M-9.5M for Ehlers will be an overpayment for like a year but soon will fit under % of cap equivalent to an $8M player. Anything below $9M for him right now is a bargain.

$10M is where I’d draw the line for sure.

I'm convinced that the 1st round pick is actually the main piece in the deal, and Chytil is just a gamble on C they took hoping he turns into a 2C. Allvin needed a high-ish 1st rounder he can flip for M-Petey, whom I think is the actual main piece in the JTM trade.

The best attribute about Ehlers is he can produce without a 1C or L1 ice time. You can build a credible L2 with Ehlers as the centerpiece, which might be what we are forced to do since we are unlikely to get another 1C or 2C this summer. You can also put Ehlers with EP40 and hope it rejuvenate Petey and you get your 1C back that way. There are many options with a player like Ehlers (and Marner to an even greater degree).

He is also blazing fast, for a slow team like our's, Ehlers/Chytil/DOC can add another dimension that we badly need.

Major Jim Benning vibes with how things are looking.

Losing Suter and Boeser for nothing. Missing out on the playoffs. Ending up with a 16-20 overall pick….

The NYR pick becoming unprotected….

Dorrington and Fermstrom popping.

Allvin quickly establishing himself as one of the worst GM’s the league….the main difference that has masked things a bit is some lower end signings have worked out…

Sherwood and Lankinen.

But for each of those guys, there’s a Deharnais or Heinen or Kuzmenko where they’ve paid to move them.

Again, just an awful year and Allvin should be fired.

This is hyperbole. Allvin is average at worst.

Who cares about the NYR 1st and Dorrington/Fermstrom when: 1) Blueberries will never allow for a rebuild and will always want to compete for the playoffs (we were never realistically keeping the pick that would not help the team until 3-5 years from now); and 2) the team needs to compete to convince Hughes to re-sign?

Unless your point is that they should have gotten better value than M. Pettersson + O’Connor (and dumping VD and Heinen).

Management still had made more good moves than bad moves, with the good moves having a much bigger impact (like hiring Tocchet, acquiring Hronek, Lankinen, etc.) than the bad moves (bad contracts that subsequently get dumped for not crazy costs).

This season hasn't been great, but the management group is still a far cry from being amongst the worst in the league.

Ehlers is getting 10m + on a tax team, no doubt in my mind.

Chytil was a terrible target but I do think a team like Chicago/San Jose/Anaheim/Philly will throw a 2nd or 3rd and take a flyer on him. I don’t think he has much value to any serious playoff team or one with playoff aspirations but I can see some of the bottom dwellers perhaps have the patience and availability to accommodate Chytil.

Then obviously use the pick as part of a larger package. Chytil should be traded though.
