I remember saying who on earth is giving Mikheyev 5M then I said who is giving that much term and money to Jake Debrusk, Bruins couldn't even give him away a few years ago, now I'm going to say who is giving Nik Ehlers 10 million a year.
still, it's 10M.

It’s like Land of the Lost

“Hey Marshall you ever get tired of being wrong?”

“…..sometimes!”

My guess is he gets around $8M +/-. He's also likely to flop in the playoffs. :sarcasm:

I imagine the Nucks' pitch to all NCAA and International FA Cs this year will be all about having a middle 6C position wide open for the taking in the NHL.

Too bad this year's crop of college FAs don't appear to have anyone worthy of that shot. Not sure what the IFA market is looking like this year...

I wonder if MTL is down enough on Dach to let him go for cheap.
Doubtful. His main issue in his time with Montreal has been injuries. When he came back this year it looked like he was playing to not get hurt and he looked terrible. Turned out he was still battling an injury. Thst said, ifvhe can get, and stay healthy, and approach his potential, he's exactly the player they need. I think they'll be patient with him. If not he'll be packaged with a high pick or one of thier a/b+ prospects to bring in a different mid 20's 2c. Vancouver isnt a great trading partner considering they're both looking for the same thing

The team that trades a franchise player never wins.

Seriously, I don’t think ever. Has there ever been a case where the opposite has been true?
This may be interpreting “franchise player” liberally but:

Matt Duchene trade from Colorado and LA trading Jack Johnson (at the time he was a recent high draft pick but obviously Kopitar/Doughty/Quick was their core).

So is Pius Suter a 2C? Excellent defensive metrics and scoring at a 0.5ppg clip with no 1pp time. Do we need to re-sign him?

Just to clear things up, I wasn't comparing Debrusk and Ehlers in stats or how they play, etc.

Just them as free agents. Ehlers isn't the same level as Marner or a marquee name. He'll get signed quickly but it'll probably be for a surprising rate. Like Debrusk. Teams that aren't big game hunting will find their target a notch or two lower.
The issue with this thinking is that there is likely to be a lot more teams interested in Ehlers than there was in Debrusk. FWIW, Sportsnet has Ehlers as their 2nd best UFA, behind only Marner. He’s going to get a lot of interest simply due to supply and demand and the HUGE amount of capspace that has become available this offseason.

Let's all be very very clear, the Canucks lose any trade involving Quinn Hughes going the other way.

You sign Hughes to a max contract and make him the highest paid player in the league if you're the Canucks. Don't even think about f***ing around there. That extra year is the main reason you can offer a better deal than anyone else.

He has a ton of leverage on the team and he's going to go wherever he wants to go, because every other GM will move heaven and earth to clear enough cap space to sign him. He's a once in a lifetime, franchise-defining talent that should have gone 1st overall in 2019. Hell, he's better than most of the 1st overalls in surrounding drafts (including his brother).

There is no way in hell you're winning any kind of trade that doesn't involve someone like Macklin Celebrini coming back, and that's not happening. No assortment of players and picks makes up for losing Hughes. If he goes, the team is forced into an immediate rebuild.

Is .5 ppg enough from a 2c in today's NHL?

Looking at the top 8 teams in the league second highest scoring center.

Potras 63
Vilardi 61
W Johnson 63
Hertl 59
Jarvis 53
Necas 51
Barkov 64 (Reinhardt 75)
Tavares 61

If we want to be a good team Suter has to be our very good 3c.

So much wrong here. Protras, Vilardi, Jarvis, Reinhart and Necas are ALL wingers.

I agree with this. But as it stands, Vancouver could be heading into the offseason with no 2nd or 3rd line center. Letting Suter walk with the uncertainty surrounding Chytyl’s future would be silly unless Suter is asking for a ridiculous contract.

Chycrun contract makes Hronek look like a steal!

Yeah people are going to need to get used to the new contracts all over again.

This is what a good top 4 dman hitting UFA who can put up points is going to go for moving forward. With so few dmen on the market now, Provorov and Pionk are going to make way more bank than people expect. This contract was also to go back to a contending team - once team's start bidding things are going to look crazy.

Glad our current situation on the back-end is stable, and that they were able to get M. Petey for such a reasonable contract. Defensive dmen continue to be ridiculously underpaid compared to their counterparts.

At this rate if he scores another 3-4 goals Pius Suter will get 6/year. We should extend Hughes before these contracts go out of hand.

Yep. We're really going to start seeing the effects of rapid cap inflation. AAVs are going to skyrocket.

This is what a true top-four or fringe top-pair defenseman will cost.

I'm personally not that high on Chychrun because I don't think he defends well enough, but this is the going market rate for these guys now. Teams with their core players already locked-in are at a massive advantage. Shows Allvin did pretty well with MPetey.

define ridiculous. if he can keep pushing play without miller and ep40 in front of him he will get offered over $5m. he's basically this year's zadorov. tochett puts a guy's game together for him and allvin is too slow out of the gate to lock him up.

$6M+ with term would be ridiculous to me. $5M range where we are paying Chytyl almost $4.5M wouldn’t quite be ridiculous to me.

Most people are also going to have to readjust their expectations for contract numbers going forward, we’re already seeing it.
