Florida recognized Huberdeau's faults, even after a 115p season, and fleeced Calgary, then won the cup.
EP's issues were on full display during his 100p year, and early the next. It should have been seen and acted upon. Could have gotten an absolute haul. Star winger, #3d +
Would have been able to give Bo his 8milly and run JT-Bo each with a top tier winger.
Now we've waited too long, blown 2 Norris campaigns from Hughes. It doesn't really matter what happens, none of the even remotely available names move the needle much to come out of the West.
That's a lot of revisionist history.
Florida simply didn't want to pay what Huberdeau wanted and pounced on an exceedingly rare opportunity to get a younger star who just so happened to want out of Canada. This wasn't some masterclass of scouting, but taking advantage of an opportunity. A good move on their part, however it was also one damn near everyone thought was absurd.
Even with how bad things turned out, they didn't fleece Calgary. Weeger is still an excellent defenseman and Huberdeau is actually having a respectable season right now. Would they rather have Tkachuk? Absolutely. But that was never an option.
As for EP. Absolutely nobody was thinking of trading him nor were these supposed "issues" on display. That's complete nonsense. It's easy to look back with hindsight and say we'd have gotten a haul. We'd also look like morons if he put up 100+ again while we were waiting on prospects to become that.
No GM is ever trading a 100 point player unless they have to. It doesn't matter if we had Benning, Allvin, Zito or whoever else.
