I wonder what the Rangers' JTM trade would look like if we refuse to retain salary? Based on everyone's assessments, Lindgren is basically salary dump level already. The value could be dangerously close to the 1st and 3rd we gave up in the first place to get him. :ha:

they're not getting a 1st and 3rd at this point. if that was on the table it would have been done already

I hate to say it, but if the whole Byram++ conversation is on the table for Pettersson, you have to strongly consider moving him over Miller. Our defense is abysmal and the Miller offers are somehow worse. If we're going to have any chance of turning things around in the gaming years, we need to move the player who can net us a better return. Not to mention, freeing up that much cap space pretty much negates OEL.

I don't like it, but a package of Byram/Power + Cozens/Peterka or however the pieces fall does so much more for us despite Miller's age.
Welcome to the dark side

This might sound crazy but I wish they would put them on a line together for a bit (besides the PP), nothing brings people together like going to battle with each other. Pettersson has been struggling offensively and needs to get back to basics and just score goals to get his mojo back and JT is more of a playmaker than a goal scorer, plus we really need them to figure it out. Relieve pettersson of some of his defensive responsibilities and see what happens, I'm just a fan of trying things and a bit of an optimist I suppose.

Best case scenario in the short term is EP to Buffalo for a package around Power, Kulich +.

Way Suter has been playing, he's playing at a Top 6 C level.

Kulich can slide into the 3C for now or out to the wing to start.

Power slides into a 2nd pair that gets a dramatic upgrade.

Not only that, Nucks get extra space for future deals.
Does Van have a Suter that I don't know about?

Say Buffalo wants either. Which one would you do?

Pettersson for Cozen, Byram, 2nd

Or

Miller for Kulich, Byram, 2nd
Presented equally, there’s no question it should be Miller being traded. But that’s not a reality we live in.

If EP gets traded, it has to be for young pieces coming back, that’s the only we can not lose the trade badly.

I’m of the opinion that to get Pete “back”, it involves him playing in a different system. Ie. not in a Rick Tocchet coached team. It can be with us, or with another team.

I think people need to cool it with the "just when things are looking better!" talk.

1) He probably gave the interview at least a few days ago. And 2) Taking that narrow a lens on the team's fortunes is an Aquilini/Benning special that is just bad business overall... ("let's reevaluate on the basis of this upcoming road trip, instead of the last 7 years!") We have a substantial sample size here and the issue won't go away -- don't be taken in by a couple of victories that easily could have gone differently.

I miss Gillis and Gilman. They would never say shit like this publicly.
I miss them for hockey reasons. Every time Gilman is on S&P I wonder why the hell he isn't GMing the club.

Just trade one or the other, or both. I don't care. Just get it over with. Us fans are going crazy. Imagine how QH is feeling right now.

To me this management team is pretty clearly excellent at certain aspects of running the team and abjectly terrible at others.

Our pro scouting moves have generally been excellent, and the team has also done extremely well to cut bait on moves that didn't work out (Lindholm) and even getting out from bad contracts without paying too much of a price (Mikheyev). The team mostly has not overpaid on contracts and amateur scouting has so far looked reasonably competent.

On the other hand, almost every significant HR issue has been handled extremely poorly, and often publicly. Rachel Doerrie. Zadorov's comments about being dissuaded from signing because of the team's conduct in negotiations. Letting the team's best two forwards getting into an intractable feud in the first place. Now having the team president come out, unprompted, to publicly discuss the problem JUST as the team started to string good performances together and get results. Just a bunch of arrogant, unforced errors that have demonstrably hurt the team's performance.

I like this management team overall and have a lot of confidence in their ability to make hockey moves, but the professionalism problem in the organization is real and is going to continue to negatively affect the on ice product if they can't sort it out.

Listening to the D&D Mason interview I don't see anyway that this doesn't end with both JT and EP out the door. Certainly looks like they were given every opportunity to work things out for the good of the team and failed badly. Having one guy "win" by staying has to cause continuing problems in the room.
I think this is really getting to the heart of the decision. I think management has concluded that neither Pettersson nor Miller have handled themselves professionally.

Keeping one or the other would implicitly set the precedent and nudge the team culture towards allowing that behavior in the future. The Horvat/Miller trade is an example of how that schism among players wasn't dealt with and it propagated itself again this year. You can't have a culture that allows players to question each other's leadership, and you can't have a culture that allows players to quit on their team and disappear.

Trading them both is about cutting the dead flesh out so the organization can heal and properly reset its culture. I think they perceive that cultural rot is a greater risk to Quinn Hughes' future with the club than trading away two top-six centers. Which speaks a lot about how bad the problem is that they perceive to exist.

And say what you will about how Allvin and Rutherford may professionally scout and evaluate players on ice (it's hit and miss) - I do trust them based on their experience in Pittsburgh and in Carolina to know what a functional locker room and functional culture looks like. That they are pulling the emergency chute on team culture is incredibly telling and I think we ought to acknowledge that they may know better than us about how toxic it is in that room right now.

Reflects my feelings as well. The whole Boudreau fiasco also reflects this.
Overall compared to prior management groups other than Gillis I think this group has done a decent job.
