Can’t tell, on mobile, if my previous post with JD Burke’s tweet is visible.

Canucks going after Livingstone and Makinski, as reported by Fabre, but also forward Riese Gaber. Then links to an EP Rinkside article.

it'll be interesting to see if vancouver can fill out their depth with college/euro free agents

there's some decent players that were ncaa free agents in the last few years but most weren't big targets. sean walker, neal pionk and zach whitecloud are probably the best but nick blankeburg, logan o'connor, cole smith and blake lizotte are decent too

euro free agents are a little different because the good ones are usually known way ahead of time like kuzmenko, kampf and zub but there's also been some guys like pius suter and marcus bjork that i think were pretty under the radar

I posted this in the previous thread but this is absolute best case scenario

Beauvillier - Petterson - Kuzmenko
Kravstov / Garland - Miller - Mikheyev
Pearson - Gaudreau / Kampf (2M?) - Podkolzin
Aman - Joshua - Maenalanen
PDG

Hughes - Bear
Gavrikov - Hronek
OEL - Livingstone

Myers moved after signing bonus, most likely wih retention
Boeser moved with retention and using picks / Rathbone / Hoglander / Lekkermaki to do so
Would also like to see Garland (or more accurately his contract) moved, even if it's just for a 3rd

Not sure if that's a bubble team but it could represent an incremental step forward towards what management is seeking to do.

With the trade deadline complete, thought I'd throw out my first rough attempt at a roster for next season to show where we are at in terms of salary structure.

My initial takeaway: Can you turn Boeser's 6.65 & say Brisebois's 775k plus the small amount of cap space and re-purpose that 8 million into a 3C and 2nd pairing LHD? That has to be the goal.

If you see any obvious misses/mistakes, please let me know.

Notes:
-Using Boeser as a placeholder at 3C. For the purposes of this it keeps the contract on the books but acknowledges that you need to turn that player (or a different player) into a 3C.

-Put Bear in on the expectation he signs a 2 or 3 year deal at 2.75 million.

-Pearson & Poolman on LTIR

-I have Kuzmenko down for 3/4 bonuses as I think that's basically confirmed, but it's possible he hits another to add another 212k on here.

-Actually kept Myers at RD in this scenario. I think it could go either way but I actually don't think he's a bad fit on this roster.. just overpaid & overplayed. Hronek takes care of the second one.

-Filled out depth players with approximate contracts.

-I have all of Kravtsov/Hoglander/Podkolzin/Studnicka listed but if you want to include a Dries/PDG/someone else then I get it. Wasn't too worried with filling those guys out at this point, more about the salary structure. Same with Wolanin/Burroughs. Will likely see some guys moved out here for PK guys.

-Have Silovs in there for now, obviously could go Delia or bring in someone else. Don't think they'll spend much $ on it

Rathbone used as an add on to the inevitable Boeser trade. Boeser (retained?) + Rathbone for Pettersson as an example

Livingstone is probably gonna sign here.

Myers with some retention would garner some interest after his July 1st bonus. Just need to figure out who is on his 10 team no trade list.

I could see the team going after a guy like Christian Dvorak for that 3C position.

Effectively I could see all of Poolman, Pearson, Myers, Boeser, Dermott, Rathbone, and potentially Garland/Hoglander not playing for the Canucks again. They talked about major surgery and a quick retool - they're gonna aim for it this offseason.

If the defense looks something like this and Demko does his thing, the team will be of the believe they can make the playoffs.

Hughes Bear
Pettersson Hronek
OEL Livingstone
Wolanin Burroughs

It's gonna be a ride. Probably not too good of one lol

My calculations are similar, but I am not so confident that Pearson will commit to LTIR. Given that, we pretty much need to move one of our wingers out just to stay cap compliant. That means it's going to be very difficult to add a 3C or upgrade our defense via free agency or by trade. I'm thinking we'll need to move Boeser with retention for a draft pick, and that's how we get under the cap.

I'm kind of thinking the 3C position might have to be an internal battle between Aman, Studnicka, Podkolzin (maybe go down that road?), Raty, or one of our other AHL forwards or a future college free agent. Unless there is some serious offseason progression this is a sad state of affairs, hopefully we can carry this line by supplementing it with some of our winger depth.

For defense it's going to be tough, because despite there not being a lot of high end talent, there aren't many roster spots available. I guess one serious question we need to ask ourselves is, is Bear a top 4 defenseman? If he isn't, and he's just a good #5/6, then I would prefer to not commit much money to him as that essentially makes him a stop gap with our structure. Give him a 1 year low ball deal rather than commiting to him on another Poolman level contract. Then, maybe we can get Livingstone and Reinbacher? If we do, and they perform, that could really save us on the OEL contract as they would both be on ELC contracts for a few years.

can pretty much write off the playoffs if they go this route. studnicka and raty aren't nhlers at this point and aman is very very limited offensively. podkolzin suddenly becoming a useful center after being a nearly useless winger would be a shocking development

I would personally buy out OEL the first second I could. By 27-28 when we start to feel the penalty (2.12 Million) it will probably only account for a little over 2% of the cap. At that point who cares.

I'm beginning to wonder if buying out OEL this offseason is the plan. Alternatively, they could see if he wants to go to LTIR considering he ended this season with an injury.

He was acquired under the previous regime, poor history with the coach, and he hasn't played up to his contract. Buying him out is a bit short sighted because he'd only count 0.146mil against the cap in year 1, and 2.346mil in year 2. By year 3, you could make a case that the salary cap is expected to be on a sharp incline, so it would hurt a bit less carrying a higher cap hit in dead space after year 2. It would give us an instantaneous ability to upgrade the roster and keep "pushing for the playoffs" so I wouldn't put it past them.

You cannot have those young guys battle for 3C, it would be a disaster.. again. Even if it's a veteran $2 million stopgap, that's about the minimum you need to invest into that position.

I'm not a fan of Bear and would be moving on unless he's cheap, but if he can turn into a fake top4 guy by playing with Hughes then you're probably okay.

Disagree on Myers. As soon as that signing bonus is paid out, ARZ will be all over that full cap hit, likely with Poolman
Boeser I agree
Garland will stay. Tocchett likes him, and performs well under his system.
Pearson would be the other one gone probably

I can't do it man. I can't do the Aidan McDonough watch. I can't live and die on this slow one-dimensional NCAA winger who's about to turn 24. I can't bring myself to care. Please.

If we can clear the cap space (HAH) I would love to go for Ryan O'Reilly on a 2-year high-cap hit deal.

Acciari would be my target for my right-handed PK C in that case.

An intermediate target could be Oskar Sundqvist.

Also would love to see Engvall here. For a team that needs to do a better job of controlling play, the dude is one-man possession juggernaut.

So which RH 3C do y'all think the Canucks should/will target in the off-season?
There's lots of them available but most will be expensive. I don't mind Tyson Jost as a target. He's young, he can forecheck effectively and he might be relatively good value.
