Regardless of appetite, they don't need to trade within the division ... Edmonton is also apparently interested. There will be enough demand to trade most of these pieces back east and not break a sweat.

The biggest issue for the Canucks is that they don't have a lot of trade pieces and need to do some pretty specific things to accommodate salary. I'm just not convinced a trade will be available to them, even if they're extremely motivated to do something.
The trade market is funny thing, literally every team has to shed salary in order to tweak their rosters, if the bottom feeders aren’t getting the value they want to shed salary then a lot of the teams won’t be able to make any moves ( unless you are Vegas or Tampa and the LTIR Fairy brings you gifts early this year )
Everybody will want a Tanev or Zadarov but only a fraction can actually make the trades work and the teams with cap space probably don’t need a rental

Will Pettersson signing for only 3-4 years instead of long term, cripple the Canucks in signing UFAs long term if they think Pettersson could leave and that the Canucks would lose competitiveness?

the canucks really need bear in the worst way but i'm kind of skeptical they can make the salaries work. even if soucy goes on ltir they still need to clear whatever bear gets in salary if they ever want to activate soucy. they probably need to move 2m (i'm guessing, maybe he signs for less?) which means there's only a handful of teams that can really help out the canucks: carolina, seattle, san jose, arizona, columbus, detroit, nashville, anaheim, buffalo and chicago

what would be ideal is some kind of garland for a 3c or right handed dman trade but i dunno what's out there that's realistic unless the canucks include draft picks. maybe fabbro, carrier or glass from nashville? lyubushkin or retained henrique from anaheim? justin schultz in seattle is a ufa but i don't think seattle would want to add money on the wings unless you're giving them something like willander. clifton has been a really poor fit in buffalo, maybe you can swap him for garland?

depends on Soucy, if he is out until like feb, we can sign Bear and then holdout till close to the TDL and trade away some guys when their value is high.
Hate to put this out there but it’s unlikely Soucy is our only LTIR all season, sign Bear now with the LTIR and wait and see what happens.

I really wish people would include cap compliance in their trade suggestions. I won't bother to even consider a trade where someone who proposes it can't be bothered to figure out the cap implications.

We are in cap trouble. People go "oh just assume someone else will be on LTIR" or "we just trade misc overpaid crap at the TDL". If we are in cap trouble, no one is going to help us without us paying a ton for relief.

Its stupid how many people don't realize just how valuable cap space is these days. It was one of Dim Jim's weakest points.

Can you imagine where we could be today if Dim Jim had not signed a single free agent, pretty much all of which he overpaid. Or if he hadn't thrown in a free draft pick with every trade.

Edit - (I think this is in response to Andora from the previous thread). The rationale behind not trading prospects. Because once you start trading top draft picks and top prospects, you are gutting your future ability to compete. In todays cap world, you have to have some ELC's filling out your line up to be cap compliant if you have a bunch of top level players taking a ton of money. What happens if we go all in, trade Willander and our 1st, to get some major D help. (not even taking into account that this is basically impossible to do and remain cap compliant). So we get knocked out in the 1st round this year (assuming we make the playoffs, then pull a Bost or Tor MO) and we have signed EP for 3 years at $11.5M. 3 years from now, if we have not got past the 2nd round, and EP and Huggy decide to leave, we have nothing coming up in the system.

I don't think we're at peak Ethan Bear desperation yet. Christian Wolanin is a little "banged up" but we've got him sitting in our back pocket.

He's at worth a look, instead of going through the process of clearing cap to sign Bear, ie a trade from a poor position.

I think he’s going to get under 2M considering he’s coming off a big injury. More like 1.5-1.75

I dunno, there's a pretty big demand for defensemen and the Canucks will not be the only bidder. Not sure why he wouldn't max out on a 1-year deal and then sign where he wants in the summer.

Regardless, you likely need to move a forward contract out to even talk about signing him at all.

If he’s smart he’ll sign wherever gets the best opportunity and there’s a massive hole on the Canucks right side.

That's a pretty myopic view. There are holes on defenses all over the place, thus the stampede for Zadorov and Tanev. There are plenty of teams that would like to add a right-side NHL defenseman mid-season without sacrificing anything but a contract slot.

He’s playing for his next contract, the only teams that has the cap that can pay like 2+M are like the crappy teams. He’s not going to jeopardize his next contract by playing on a tire fire team so he can make like a couple hundred K more.

i really think this team should have moved poolman with a 3rd or 4th round pick to a team already in ltir. they wouldn't have had to carry over the bonus overages from last year if they'd done it in summer 2022 and they'd be able to accrue cap space with soucy on ltir this year

It was specific to the one Prospect with a more direct question but I mean at the end of the day you have to seriously evaluate what you have in your system and how many of those guys at each position do you legit see becoming an NHL player then cross reference that to your salary projections and lineup projections and see how big of a hole it creates.

If you refuse to move a prospect because he's the best one while potentially having for example three other projected NHL players is that beneficial? If the player you are bringing in is of the right age and impact Where's the Line? There's only so many minutes in a game to be spread around

There is a line though for good teams.. he can only go so high before the team considers what other work they need to do to fit him in

If they get to a point of having to make abother trade or expose a player to waivers it adds asset cost to the salary

Does he move the dial enough to cost the money and potential plus

You make fair points but it’s kinda challenging to make a trade proposal with cap considerations if we don’t know what the market will be, I mean I could say trade Beauvillier for a 4th or trade Beauvillier and a 4th for futures, it’s stuck in armchair GM land until somebody sets the market at what cap relief will look like. I think a lot of the posters here feel the same way about cap space, the previous regime really painted us into a corner, heck if we were able to have signed Petey to a 7 year contract like we did with Hughes we would be laughing

Rasmus is definitely the top choice but tanev would still be a huge boost for this current team, even if he's lost a bit of a step. Maybe he's slower but he's still solid defensively, and the off ice factors are hugemassive.

Calgary has a few dman upgrades we could use to solidfy the top six, something like 1st garland beau myers hirose pod klim for tanev@50% and andersson, hanafin and weegar.
