The annoying part about all of this, it can literally be solved with a simple sentence from Petey.

To be fair to him, he told reporters that he's not talking contract until the off-season. There's no trades and nothing interesting happening so various members of the media are making this the story. Just got to wait another 11 days for this to pass over.

Fair enough, But it will be a distraction the moment the Playoffs are over again.

I mean, he said in the clearest simplest terms that he just didn't want to do anything until after the season was over. I don't think he's obliged to say anything more than that, and it's an entirely reasonable decision for him to make.

It's crazy that the salary cap that applies to 31 other teams somehow doesn't apply to new jersey.
5 million cap increase means they need 7or 8 million extra.
So out of their 19+ million in cap space they use 14 mil on Petey leaving them with around 5 mil to sign 4 4th liners and a 7,8,9 defenceman. Then trade for a goalie.
Trying and FAILING.
What does that tell all the other teams?
Vancouver is quickly losing leverage in any trade one on one. They will have to make it a one team against another instead.

NJ just hasn't put together any type of consistent winning stretch all season. And now there's a let down after losing the biggest game of the season. I watch them a lot. And they just don't have it this year. The defensive mistakes compound, guys like Luke Hughes are simply overleveraged, and even though they're as healthy as they're going to get, the offense looks less imposing.

I normally would pick PIT as a team that I think can catch PHI or TB, but with Guentzel and now Rust out, it will be very tough sledding.

WAS I don't rate at all. They're not good. Same with NYI.

All pretty acceptable observations, which is probably a good reason for Philly not getting carried away with their positioning though. They're almost in there by default.

I agree I'm not really counting Wash or the Isles either but they are within distance to put some pressure on.

It would take guts but I can see them sticking to their guns and trading away players ... I guess it will come down to what they are offered as well. If teams are offering up first rounders (they've been open for business for a while now) and decent prospects it could happen. I guess we'll see at bit more of Briere's resolve revealed by how he handles this deadline.

It's still a shot, it makes it "Sound" true or not like he does not love vancouver, or want to stay in vancouver.

No matter if its true or not, this is why the speculation is getting worse daily.

Yeah I agree with you on this. It’s great that it’s not what he wants, but he clearly doesn’t understand the market if he thought it would just pass and not turn into a mess. Can you imagine if the team was struggling this year, it would have been a black cloud all season.

If he says this and then ends up leaving, it'll make him look like a liar and he'll get even more hate for it.
who cares, if he leaves vancouver he is gonna be hated here regardless.
Regardless if it's fair or not

That is speculation in itself about him thinking that - honestly i dont think he cares

Which is also imo not connected to the contract

It would be much worse if we were awful.
The fact we are good tho, does make his argument of waiting make less sense tho.
Like what exactly are you waiting for? This team is 1st place in the NHL, they WANT to sign you, offered you a mega contract apparently.
Obviously there is more to this only petey and the org knows.

It won’t look good if he leaves at this point, it will be obvious he was lying in the interview last summer anyhow and he will be damned with spite.
Fair point, he did say that he wanted to win somewhere where it matters or something along those lines which I mean brining a cup to Vancouver is almost as big as it gets.

Fair enough, but he might care. Some people don't like telling outright lies and misleading people.
That's fair also, but this is a professional athlete, I have seen time and time again people like to calm down a storm.

At least Rutherford knows that if this drags near the Draft, he will 100% Trade him.
This is not some rookie President or GM here.
Not sure if hes already taking those calls or not, but they will clearly have a backup plan in place.

Look at us (me for sure) we are all whipped up into a frenzy. I think we should just trade him for Pinto, Tkachuk, 2024 first and then use that first to get Guentzel and hope that the dressing room isn’t shattered.

Mikheyev would need to go and retention would need to happen, but it would be a great add to have a power forward winger.

I think Petey is leaving and I think this may get ugly and follow us through the whole playoffs.
In 2011 the national media came at us they will again this time. This is what they will use if we make a run and constantly ask him about it.

The media is creating a shit storm that is only a shit storm because the media is telling us it's a big scary shit storm. If he leaves, he leaves. If he stays, he stays. There's are only two outcomes and neither of them matter until next off-season. I don't care now and if we get near the start of free agency without any sort of reconciliation then whatever, more blood for the blood god.

I keep thinking back to the Toronto Raptors trading for Kawhi Leonard, winning the championship, and the drama around him leaving. Ultimately it didn't bother me at all whether he stayed or left because they won. That's exactly where my head is at right now. Win a Stanley Cup this season. Do that I the franchise could fold and I wouldn't care one bit.
