I wonder if the increasing size of coaching staffs over the years has to do with head coaches becoming older? Now they're more of an executive overseeing a bigger team instead of doing as much of the leg work.

Jt miller should have held out. Honestly, he would probably get time 10m this off-season. Lol

A few media folks have speculated that there could be a big market for Miller because the free agent crop is lacking any impact offensive players, his contract is in-line, possibly less, with what he’d get as a UFA, and trading for him would cost less than a younger player.

I don’t see any point if we’re doing a retool trading JT Miller.

If we trade him, we need an absolute haul

Rumoured ask, from multiple reporters including Friedman in his latest written 32 Thoughts, was two 1sts and a good prospect. If such a trade goes down, the Canucks have every intention of reinvesting at least some of those assets into a replacement.

Unless the prospect is a third line Centre, still makes no sense

My guess would be that the Canucks had another deal lined up for the deadline of off-season to acquire a center with the picks they’d acquire from the Pittsburgh deal.
I guess you could use the calf space for a player like dumba or gavrikov.

So the trade would look much bigger if you add the cap player as well

Miller to a team like say Carolina tonight should command a haul back contending teams have low picks and less cap

The idea is to then trade the surplus in picks, and other asset(s), for a younger replacement.

Like this.

And then, as you say here, use the created capspace to help facilitate the gaps in the rest of the roster.

Good examples would be the Hronek trade or the Dach and Romanov trades from the last draft.

Canes have 27MM in cap space and a pick surplus for the next two years. Definitely not your typical contender who has been shipping out every pick and spending every last dollar.

It’s interesting, but I think it’s pretty fair to say it’s a longshot.

I can see players like garland, and Brock Boeser having more value with this awful off-season free agent pool.

I definitely think they have the framework of a deal for a young C. The Names that come to mind are Roy, Krebs, Dellandrea and Glass. I think that Hayton and Kotkaniemi could potentially be available but I think Carolina would be wanting to upgrade on Kotkaniemi if they were to trade him.

Dont pay attention to east much but thats actually scary they will get better easily

Totally. There’s a bunch of reasons why it’s unlikely to happen but I think there’s a greater than zero chance something comes together at the draft.

Yes and no.

They really fumbled the bag this year with their deadline... especially if they get knocked out in the first round.

A team with so much cap space and so many assets... major acquisitions are Ghost and PoolParty? Ghost has been pretty good for them but PoolParty has 2 points in 17 games.

They still have to figure out their goaltending situation and they have some big ticket guys they need to re-sign in a year or two (Aho, Necas, Slavin, Pesce, Skej, Andersen).

This year was one of their best windows but they didn't even pretend to half ass it.

They also have a very strong solid prospect pool for a team that has been near the top of the east for several seasons.
Meh I would say their prospect pool is around 10-15. The only real standout is Niskanen other then that its a lot of B-B+ guys. But their system has a lot of D and C prospects who fit our needs so if they get bounced early I could see them poking around at Miller

Trading Garland for a 2nd to LA like Shah reported they offered @ the 2022 TDL didn’t make too much sense until you realize that better wingers went for less and Marino went for a 2nd + AHL D.

Garland just isn't the type of players GMs like. Small, doesn't score goals and doesn't provide much defensively

He's an analytics darling though.

Any team heavy on analytics would probably be interested in acquiring him for cheap.

Calling Ty Smith just an "AHL D" seems like you're underselling here. Former first round pick that's shown glimpses of being a good offensive defenseman and will probably play for Pittsburgh next year? Just turned 23 a month ago.

Hardly just an "AHL D".

If you look across the league there's not really many options that make sense.

Kotkianiemi is the only one that makes sense for all parties involved. Carolina really should made a legitimate offer this year instead of trying to bargain hunt.

KK + 1st + prospect should be enough.
