In regards to the Gavrikov thing - I have no idea as I don't watch other teams. I thought he looked good against us in that Kings game though.

But if you think this guy will provide legitimate top four value for numerous years - and i don't mean fringe #4 value - you stomach slight overpayments.

They have to pull two more top four D and a defensive 3C with good passing this summer. It's not an option. It just has to be done or this is all pointless.

I liked the idea of trying to target an overpriced 3C for one of our overpriced wingers.

And if Bear is threatening to ask for $3+ million in arbitration, you shake his hand and wish him good luck with whatever his new team will be.

Like I said above, this is the exact Baertschi situation and this level of player is the sort you fire into the sun before you cave to giving overpayments to.

i'm not arguing the canucks should sign bear to whatever he wants. i just don't think he's making a mistake going to arb/ufa

I don't think he's getting $3 million in UFA, or anywhere close. And I think he risks having a Ben Hutton situation happen for him where he ends up taking a cheap 1-year show-me deal.

When you're this level of player and have a good situation to build your career, you're an idiot to get greedy.

Where on earth did this $3m number come from? He's been a 3rd pairing defenceman for the last 3 seasons, and hasn't come close to playing a full season in any of them.

The poster I was responding to was talking about him getting that via either arbitration or UFA.

bear has arb rights and is going to get 3m+ if it gets that far. look what walman just signed for. if the canucks don't tender him he's like the 5th or 6th best right handed d on the market and probably gets 3m+ anyways

Arbitration is weird ... so maybe? But I agree that he isn't getting that in UFA and should be getting nowhere near that here. He's at and he shouldn't really be moving up from that.

Mankato is about to be eliminated from the NCAA tournament making Livingstone and Hirose free agents. Expect them to sign contracts over the weekend. Maybe even as soon as tomorrow.

carolina had to retain to move this player.

i think he's still in a similar position as a player to where he was when he arrived here - just has had actual opportunity.

and i think he's a guy you slot into a bottom pair role and that's kind of it. he's better defensively than someone like wolanin but i trust wolanin with the puck on his stick more than bear.

Yeah, I like Bear and I think ideally he's a #5 but he's shown he can play #4 minutes next to Hughes and do a decent job.

He's been a nice find for the team this year and I'd be happy to see him signed at about that $2 million mark we're paying him now ... but this is a replaceable player, and this is the level of player where you absolutely do not overpay. And overpaying Dickinsons and Beagles and Roussels and Baertschis and Benns is what absolutely killed the last regime.

And you'd think a player who spent a year in purgatory would be on board with that given the opportunity he's getting here. And if he wants to get greedy? Bye.

Are we the most unique team board on HF based on our mix of intelligent posters and shitposters?

Bear stepping in cold and being able to start a break out and cut off plays isn't this special thing. I see him as the same type of player you do, but his success/popularity/whatever is primarily predicated on how utter crap our defense has been for a long time.

carolina had to retain because they waited too long to move him. no one had cap space at the point he was moved

i think bear easily gets 3m or more in arb and probably but not certainly gets close to that in free agency if the canucks don't qualify him. the competition at right d is like klingberg, severson, dumba, holl, mayfield, gudas, hamonic and shattenkirk. i think he probably slots in somewhere between dumba and hamonic in terms of what he signs for

Cornell knocked off defending champs Denver 2-0. Malinski and Andreev play again on Saturday at 1pm versus Boston.
