Wondering if Paul Stastny could be had on a cheap 1 year deal. Seems to be a decent depth C for Carolina this year. I project him to be in the 900k to 1.5 mil range.

Hard to believe he's turning 38 this year. Guy has managed to last 17 seasons in the league despite not having the best skating.

F Gaudreau and Johansson have looked good for Minny. No idea what's up with Johansson. Guy looks to have just spent some of his NHL years just mailing it in but looks like a decent two-way piece when he gives a ****. May be worth looking at if the price is right.

-far apart with Bear
-Canucks are making it very clear that a 3rd line centre is a target on July 1st
-Barbashev and Gavrikov is a guy Dhaliwal wants people to keep an eye on
-mentions Sasson as an NCAA Milstein kid

Imagine the Canucks hitting a home run with unsigned UFAs, would you guys be comfortable with a defense that included Hardy Haman Aktell and Jake Livingston? I don't really see a scenario where it works.

In my mind, you could see:

Hughes - Livingston
OEL - Hronek
Aktell - Bear
Wolanin/Brisebois/Burroughs

(At this point, I'm just assuming Myers gets traded after his bonus is paid)

It will be interesting to see where the Bear contract talks lead to..?..Apparently, they’re far apart.

I’ve seen a decent sample of his ability,and I would peg him around #4-5 D man....A tweener.

Bear should be firing his agent. This has been a great situation for him and he is not nearly entrenched enough as an NHLer to be getting greedy. You were a healthy scratch to start this season and a couple steps away from being out of the league - if an NHL team that likes you and is going to play you offers you 2 years/$4 million or something, you take it and try to build value for your next contract.

The Milstein pipeline is hilarious, but also the sort of competitive advantage thing the team needs to have happen to open a window from where they were.

I'm not that attached to Bear...the organization resurrected his career so it's weird for him to start asking for the moon now.

I don't think Barbashev is a great option tbh, I know his name comes up because of Millstein but I really don't see much of a fit.

Another guy I'm sort of interested in is Holl...no idea what he'll get on his next contract though. I think he might be decent paired with Hughes.

bear has arb rights and is going to get 3m+ if it gets that far. look what walman just signed for. if the canucks don't tender him he's like the 5th or 6th best right handed d on the market and probably gets 3m+ anyways

Yeah, if they're looking at Barbashev at the 3C...I don't think he's played center at all for two seasons. He'll also come overpaid.

Milstein reeling Russians to Vancouver is only an advantage if they're coming in under market value. As an agent, I do not think he's advising his clients to do that. He sees the Canucks as a place his clients can make bank.

Holl is a solid player. A top-four, right-handed defenseman.

my worry with milstein is he's dangling players like kuzmenko and gavrikov and leveraging them to get inflated deals for his other clients. i'm half convinced mikheyev was the cost of signing kuzmenko and if the canucks sign both barbashev and gavrikov no one will be able to convince me they weren't a package deal. i also expect the canucks to extend kravtsov this summer regardless of how he plays down the stretch

I hear you but I’m not seeing it. About time the Canucks had some sort of connection/advantage. The Bostons/NYR east coast team have long wielded the hammer with NCAA kids….

Kuzmenko, Kratsov have both sat games….. Mikeyev was maybe slightly overpaid but it was lent wild.

Gavrikov would be a huge add and likely finally solidify a tragic defense since Tanev left. I see open the flood games and the more Milstein clients the better.

i'm not saying milstein is pulling the strings and making roster decisions or anything. i think if it's happening then it's pretty much limited to getting pen to paper on contracts. i just think it's a little suspicious the canucks won the kuzmenko sweepstakes and also have done a bunch of things that could be perceived as favours for milstein's other clients (mikheyev's contract, "rescuing" kravtsov from new york, whatever happened with kalynuk)

i'm also not against them signing more milstein clients (although i don't really think gavrikov will live up to the contract he gets)

Yeah I've been thinking about the Milstein thing as well. It's more of an NBA thing where agencies/players/teams get aligned and then suddenly you see depth players overvalued when it comes to contracts but this is the kind of situation where it could happen. I guess we'll have to see how it manifests. For now it wouldn't surprise me if guys like Kravtsov/Klimovich gets longer leashes than they should.

Unrestricted free agents are always overpaid - I don't really feel that Kuzmenko's extension was an overpayment and Mikheyev only slightly. If we get first dibs on coveted players by signing other players to slight overpayments via package deals I'm totally fine with that. This team needs every single competitive edge or advantage it can get. I'll also say that Millstein seems to understand how to handle this market - the Kuzmenko family was a nice touch and the Mikheyev statement on his injury settled fans down astutely.

Bear walking is fine with me. Agree that he should be firing his agent for penny pinching here. He’s in a good situation and has guaranteed minutes.

Yup.

He's been given 19 minutes/game here as the #4 defender which is a HUGE opportunity for a guy coming off two poor seasons and starting this year as a healthy scratch for the first 10 games of the season before the trade.

The trade to Vancouver has been absolutely perfect for him and pretty much a career-saving move, and if they're offering anything remotely around $2 million he should be jumping on it. Angling for a 3-year deal or a significant pay increase is dumb as rocks, and as much as I like Bear and would be happy to have him back, he isn't good enough that the team shouldn't move on if the price isn't right.

This is basically the exact Sven Baertschi situation where the player needed the team more than the team needed the player but Benning bent over and gave Baertschi a $10 million contract for a guy who simply wasn't established in the NHL in the way that merited anything close to that.

If he's that much in demand the Canucks should be able to trade his RFA rights for a decent return.

PS: The Milstein speculation is quite entertaining.

Sr cloud has basically rope a doped MSU leading 2-0

Livingstone has looked ok. I like that he consistently engages contact

And if Bear is threatening to ask for $3+ million in arbitration, you shake his hand and wish him good luck with whatever his new team will be.

Like I said above, this is the exact Baertschi situation and this level of player is the sort you fire into the sun before you cave to giving overpayments to.
