This tends to happen whenever Benning isn't actually DOING anything. Once he starts doing things (shudder) his dead-enders seem to disappear from this forum quickly.

I mean what do you expect when their main arguments are, well let's wait and see and umm it's not THAT terrible.

Sad that Benning's top move is signing a guy they couldn't even trade at the deadline.

sad indeed but did get a 31 goal 63 point season out of him at a 5m rate. 2 year deal. was a solid acquisition. setup to acquire a future piece from that signing but management and Vrbata's current situation punted that idea.

Hiding under WTG's bed...
How about UFAs that could be flipped at the deadline for future assets?
Yup.

Or not sign such players in the first place (guess that would be too much complex thinking? :naughty:)

Well to be fair, Vrbata MIGHT have been flipped had not some center was acquired that needed to be used as winger with our two best forwards (and dealing the one center Vrbata did play reasonably well with).

Qualifying Weber after last season would have resulted in the team going to arbitration and likely paying him even more than they did. Should have done the same with Sbisa...
or other option - not qualifying him but offer him a two year deal at a reduced salary (take it or leave it offer). Like #6 left side D are THAT hard to get.

paying Tanev his market rate and getting him signed to term
Is everyone forgetting Benning giving Tanev a 1-year show me deal while every intelligent fan was screaming to sign him to 4x6 years ASAP? Seriously, just because he did not **** up as usual, it is now a good move? Give me a break

I saw Jethro double down on a natural blackjack at the Riverrock. He was dealt a face card.

What a great move getting 2-1 instead of 3-2!

:sarcasm:

who said it was a good move? i was asked top 5 moves and i answered. I'm happy he was signed to market value considering the amount of people on this board that thought 5m plus was great money even after the market was set.

How about UFAs are human beings that aren't always willing to move to wherever they can be best "flipped for assets"?

 it happens every year yet somehow we can't get in on the action.

If we aren't targeting UFAs to be flipped then we should look at taking of bad contracts from teams at the cap to get futures.

There are ways to convert cap space into draft picks and prospects but unfortunately Jimbo hasn't figured it out yet.

Uh. You know that the player does have some say in the contract he signs. For the millionth time, maybe he wasn't willing to sign a 6 year deal on his performance to date? And no it wasn't 4x6 it was something ridiculous like 3.5 or 3.75 x6.

It's like negotiations go like this:

Jim: chris we like have made you an offer 3.5 mil per for 6 years and it would be really great if you would take it.

Chris: uh, I'm not signing for 6 years for that kind of money.

Jim: no you must accept the deal. We want to like lock you up long term and stuff and John like looked at the numbers and this is what you need to sign you for.

Chris: oh if you put it that way where do I sign?

What's up with the Jethro nickname!? I don't get it lol.

And Benning is an idiot for not signing Tanev. Pretty clear he had no idea what kind of player he was. He didn't seem to know anything about the team he was taking over.

Compliment the core like Vrbata did this season? Or how Miller, when healthy, tended to get the majority of the starts and in the case of last season the easier starts.

Pretty much everything was rotten, from the core to the complimentary pieces. Getting a 30 goal season out of a 2 year term isn't a bad thing.

When the team is at the point and have board approval like the Leafs were/are at, then they can go all EA Sports and do the flip. There are very few teams that are in a positions to do this in any meaningful manour.

Did I want assets in return for for Hamhuis and Vrbata this deadline? You bet, and not getting them is on Benning. With better management these last couple of years the team still wouldn't be in a position to do this approach, let alone with this owner.

With a decent core, should the team be looking for flippable place holders or somebody that may contribute something?

What did Vrbata scoring 30 goals in his first year do for us?

Nothing.

Then why keep the Sedin's or Edler or anyone expensive.

We could put Carey Price or Henrik Lundqvist on my beer league team......how do you think we would fare against the rest of the NHL?

After the season the Canucks had... After the season Lack had... After the season Miller had... After the season Markstrom had... You'd have a difficult time proving to me that going with a Markstrom + Lack combo last season wouldn't have been the better choice than Markstrom + Miller... and using that money spent on Miller to upgrade the defense - which is what I was advocating for this time last year. Miller did absolutely nothing special to justify himself on this team last season.

This year, I'm advocating trading Miller, and going with a Markstrom + any average goaltender combo... and using the money savings via trading Miller, on defense. Given last season's results, I'd be very comfortable going with a Markstrom + Lack combo again, but that's no longer possible. It'll probably be a bottom 5 team again next season, but at least try to position yourself to be successful. The money spent on Miller should be spent elsewhere.

Why keep Sedin's or Edler or anyone expensive? How do I think we'd fare against the rest of the NHL [if we did]?

The Canucks are a bottom feeder with them... Without them, I'd imagine the Canucks would be a bottom feeder.

The point is to not trade the Sedins, or Edler, or anyone expensive... The point is, Miller is unnecessary on this team, and is expensive, so don't keep him. Miller was unnecessary last season, and will be unnecessary next season.
