I don't disagree with that. I would still also go back to the lack of urgency and cycling too slow. If you're that slow then even if the other team makes mistakes, they have ample time to recover.

This team needs more players that can push the pace like Mike Santorelli did.

I can agree there. They do need to move the puck around faster, but I think the Sedins spent half the year cycling between each other because the puck died on Hansen's stick. Burrows has been similarly useless.

If this is what the game looks like now, Gillis needs to acquire a big body to play with the Sedins. Maybe it's time to make the Kassian experiment happen?

I am happy that Tortorella realizes how far off this team is, though. It speaks well to the team making the necessary adjustments this summer. This season, however, looks like a sunk cost.

:( getting close to joining the let's tank crowd

There's nothing to tank for outside of the top few picks and we don't have a chance at 'winning' that race to the bottom. There's doesn't seem to be a huge difference between picking 8th, 18th or 28th this year.

In some ways that's a good thing. Outside of that Schneider trade, this team hasn't picked in the Top 20 since 08. That's 5 drafts where they had pretty marginal 1st round picks. Even teams like San Jose (Hertl, Mueller), LA (Schenn, Forbort), Anaheim (Holland, Lindholm), Pittsburgh (Bennett) and Blackhawks (McNeill, Teravainen) managed to pick in the Top 20 a few times without trades (with trades they had even more Top 20 picks).

And it's not just the first round, you have the better pick all throughout draft. People underrate the impact that has.

There absolutely is. I don't know where you're getting this. There's a pretty clear top 15 and then maybe another 5 players that are pushing to be in that conversation. If anything, what this draft doesn't have is a clear top end like most other drafts.

Or get pissed. I work better with a chip on my shoulder when trying to bump a slump. Sales isn't a proxy to hockey, but if I get angry, I can do anything.

I know Kesler, Burrows and Bieksa are all of that mind frame...but I wonder, are the Sedins too maybe?

They aren't. We've never seen anything to indicate they are.

If one day they snap in front of the media or actually answer a question instead of saying they thought we played better I could give them the benefit of the doubt, but at this point in time Kesler and Bieksa seem to be the only guys (core guys) that genuinely hate losing and are sore losers (like Torts).

Are you suggesting the team tanks?

Or are you suggesting that maybe squeaking into the playoffs and losing in the first round will lead to a higher pick than we're generally used to and it will benefit us.

I don't believe in tanking, but I also don't believe this is a year (like I believed last year) that we should be doing anything other than trying to set the team up for next year. Felt that way all summer and that hasn't changed.

I'd prefer to see the team make the post-season and get a taste of what Tortorella wants in the post-season, but getting a pick around 15 would be a nice bonus if the team fails to qualify.

It really is going to come down to what the mid-season trade market looks like. I'll be curious to see whether Gillis is willing to strike early if an opportunity arises. The draft looks like a better option, but I don't really want the team moving good roster players for draft picks, even if that's what a ton of fans here seem to want.

Don't believe in tanking, just saying there's upside to this season even if we don't make the playoffs or lose in the 1st round.

Ok we're on the same page then. Same with Proto.

If we are moving players off the roster at this time, I'd rather add prospects that are very close to making pushes for NHL roster spots, or at least high end kids still in junior.

Picks would just scare the be-jesus out of me. I still don't trust what the team would do with picks.
