Comparing draft picks across GMs is a little bit of a fools errand if you ask me. So much depends on where the team picks, the strength of the draft etc. That said, a simple analysis of picks outside of the top 10 (historically all top 10 players play at least 100 games with few exceptions) shows that Nonis did well based largely on that 2004 draft, Benning did ok based largely on the 2014 draft, and Gillis did the worst. But the difference is so small. Basically, by percentage of picks over 6-7 years Gillis picked 2 fewer players that went on to play more than 100 games. To say that that is franchise altering is a stretch, to be polite. One of those extra players is Jonah Gadjovich and Benning traded away two others...

why do people think this? If they want a guy who has coached in the NHL there are far better candidates, and he has no previous history with Tocchet as far as I can tell.

No way and this makes no sense. Why would Canucks fans (who paid enough attention to the draft to attend the draft) be shocked at the selection of Pods thinking he would be gone already. If Pods was the popular choice most would have crossed their fingers and cheered when he was selected. This was not the case. It's like if we selected Kopitar instead of Bourdon (RIP) and saying the initial fan reaction from GM Place would have been shock "because everyone expected him to be gone already."

What you experienced doesn't mean it reflects reality or what "everyone" experienced. How do you know that "everyone expected him to be gone already" and that "Everyone was focused on the US hockey guys around our pick?" I expect a long time poster like you to be more informed and not mistake the initial shock from fans in reaction to the Canucks picking Pods as everyone being shocked that he was available.

When was the last time any Canuck coach, actually received the offer of a contract extension which would have make him the highest coach in franchise history--and then turned it down?

Surely the answer has to be--well never. Canuck coaches hit the exits in two predictable ways. Either they get fired, or their contract doesn't get renewed.

It's actually quite amusing listening to all the conspiracy theories on why Tocchet is leaving town. They range from disillusionment with the Miller trade; a distaste for Elias Pettersson; to having advanced knowledge that Hughes was leaving.

The simple reality is, Tocchet is an East Coast guy pure and simple. Just watch. He'll get a better contract with the same term or even longer--probably from the Flyers. And I'm sure he had an under-the-table hand-shake agreement before he ever agreed to part ways with the Canucks.

Let's face it. The only other time Tocchet coached in the West was his stint with the Coyotes. And I can't believe that he looks back on that experience with any degree of fondness.

So Tocchet is going home......where he can keep more of his money with lower taxes and be closer to family and friends. That's really about all there is to it.

by game 49 last year, JT Miller had 57 points in 49 games.
by game 49 last year, Eliass Petterson had 62 points in 49 games. This factor had to do with, the Pettersson, Boeser JT Miller our lotto line.

of course after this Rich Tocchet never once touched this combo again, and of course Pettersson struggles to finish with a strong season, not even close. What a stubborn piece of shit, Tocchet thinks he can make it work with putting Petterson with grinders, f off, Rick. Glad you're gone.
