As a leafs fan, you must hate Morgan Reilly then. According to nhl.com, Top 20 Give away leaders on defense over the past 4 years:

Burns
Yandle
Petry
Doughty
Karlsson
Klingberg
Brodie
Rielly (321 in 316 games)
Ekblad
Seabrook
Carlson
Subban
Gardiner (311 in 305 games)
Muzzin
Byguglien
Matheson
Letang
H. Lindholm
Niskanen
Trouba

I’m thinking maybe GVAs as a metric is more indicative of the style of play (team and player) than just “mistakes”. Unless you are saying that Burns, Doughty, Karlsson, Rielly, Carlson, Ekblad, etc.. mess up more than Gardiner?
And yet nobody wants a gently used Nick Leddy, smh.

Well we keep saying that, but then the team goes and does an acquisation.
What are you giving up for 5 yrs of Marner? That move would put you in legit contender status....better buy your tickets now....

Nah, it just confirms that Jeff O'Neil is a dick, has always been a dick, and as he's gotten fatter, he's an even bigger dick.

Sure, he's not totally wrong about the market, but ****ting on a southern, non-traditional market when it had hockey for about 5 years is a ****ing lay up. It is especially irritating given that this market embraced the guy and tried its best to make him something of a hero. He repaid and continues to repay it with dickish commentary.

If I never have to see or hear him again, it will be too soon.
Meh,don't get too rattled by it,I'm an islander fan,and I have Brooks from the NY post.....

Leaf Fans questioning the Leafs Management regarding Gardiner:
It was almost a foregone conclusion that Gardiner would not be returning to the Toronto Maple Leafs given their cap constraints. But with the announcement of his bargain bin deal with Carolina, there are more questions than answers.
Why couldn’t the Maple Leafs have offered him a similar contract? Why did they take Cody Ceci from Ottawa in the Nikita Zaitsev trade? And then why did they extend him, essentially giving him Gardiner’s money?
No matter how you spin it, his new contract looks terrible on the Maple Leafs. And it may just be their biggest misstep of the summer.

Gardiner is the ninth-best defencemen in terms of goals above replacement (GAR) over the last three seasons. GAR measures a player’s impacts based on even-strength contributions, powerplay offence, shorthanded defence, and penalties (drawn and taken). For him to be among the top-10 defencemen over a significant period of time really illustrates how valuable – and underrated – he is.

If you subscribe to the notion that Gardiner is, in fact, a top-10 defenceman, he should be paid around $7.5 million, yet he’s making just over half of that. If you’re more conservative in your evaluation of him and want to place him around the 30 range, that’s fair too.
Even then, he’s worth at least $5.5-6 million.

[Points and laughs at Toronto]

Sometimes, it's not whether you offer the contract. Sometimes the problem is you.

Spare defenseman and Reimer for an upgraded goalie?

I don't see any teams trading their clear starting G for Faulk or TVR + Reimer.

Is there a backup or platoon member you see as more reliable than Reimer?

For instance, with the way Raanta played in 2017-18 I wouldn't be dealing him if I were Arizona, even coming off the injury. They also can't be 100% sure Kuemper's season in 18-19 will continue. And I'm not sure an injury-prone Raanta is what Carolina would be looking for.

You mean "ruining".

We all wondered how long it would take JR to ruin the penguins legacy. Looks like the answer is about 3 years.

Not a JR fan, but he was brought in to maximize the team while Crosby and Malkin were still in their primes, future be damned. He succeeded in that goal by bringing back to back cup wins to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh was going to be rebuilding in the near future when Crosby and Malkin and Letang were no longer elite no matter who the GM was.

Yeah his unique brand of giving zero f***s about the future is what he was brought in there to do.
