That was my initial instinct as well, but thinking about it some more, Rod's probably thinking: "We are money in the shoot-out, so if we can win in OT great, but it's important for 2 points that we don't lose in OT". Not that Bean would lead to a loss in OT more than Hamilton, but it's probably RBA's thinking that he's still young and not as refined defensively.

Canes have 1 OTW (TB), 1 OTL (FLA), and now 4 SO wins and zero SO losses, so that line of thinking is probably pretty sound.

I liked the strategy of possess the puck and Florida can't score. They got a couple good chances and only gave up one really good chance that Slavin neutralized.

That said, Bean should be good at maintaining possession in OT as well.

Yeah, I would think Bean should be good at that as well which was why it was my initial instinct to have him out there. He can be dynamic. It's probably a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" type scenario. Canes have gone to OT/SO 6 times this season and have gotten 11 out of a possible 12 points in those 6 games.

Not overly concerned with giving Florida a point. They and Tampa are almost certain to get a playoff spot out of the Central, so giving them a point only really impacts home ice advantage come playoffs. Keeping Chicago, CLB and Dallas from getting points and gaining on Carolina is more crucial IMO.

That said, big picture is that Carolina is without their starting goalie for most of the season, without a top line winger for most of the season (Covid, not recovering well from Covid, concussion), and their star players really haven't been producing / playing well (Aho, Svech, Slavin, Dougie), yet they are still 13-6-1 which is the 5th best points % in the NHL.

this is a year to finish first in the division (I know every year is but...).

the goal is to avoid Tampa Bay or Florida in first round.

Tampa, I get. The hope is that another team pulls an upset and the Canes have a path out of the Central that avoids the Bolts entirely. Florida is not of that class and that's not meant an insult (to those lurking). The defending WC champs surging into the playoffs, what I expect, would be just as tough, if not moreso.

After the next game the Canes will have played half their games against the Florida teams and only 3 of 16 vs Detroit and Nashville. Already being fairly comfortably in a playoff spot I’m really not too worried about it. If they find a way to miss, it’s because they aren’t any good.

Plus, 4 more games at home than on the road the rest of the way.

Barring significant injury, they're no real threat to miss. The talent level and the mix of it is too good. Looking in the rearview is very 2019.

Playoffs are always also a game of attrition.

Thus, if you avoid Florida in the first round and play Chicago or Columbus you’re much better off.

You're not wrong, but then again I had been saying the same thing about Florida for a bit, and they just never fell back.

I got the impression that Florida is actually a pretty good team after playing them two times. After playing Chicago I got the impression of a medicore team with hot goaltending. IDK, we will see.

Columbus is not a desirable opponent in that regard. Because of how the Jackets play, the series will be tight and physical.

Chicago may be preferable, but the 4th place finisher could easily be Dallas, which isn't any softer of a matchup than Florida.

Avoid Tampa in the first round and I'm good. So, we either finish 1st or finish 2nd or 3rd with them finishing 1st. Of course, it's more desirable to be #1 and I think we have a decent enough chance of that, especially if Petr can shake off any rust quickly. Florida wouldn't be a walkover, but I wouldn't mind playing them in spite of their inspired play this year.

Assuming we make the playoffs (I'm not putting anything past this team), I don't think we should write off any 1st round opponent. Tampa obviously seems the scariest, but we also had probably the most complete game of the season against them.

Florida has the scary trait of never truly being out of a game. Their ability to come back and tie (or win) games when they fall behind is something any team facing them should be aware of.

Columbus and Dallas, as already mentioned, play the physical, grinding style that's built for long playoff series. You may best them in the series, but they won't make it easy and you'll be feeling it well past that first round.
