Modern sports medicine is helping players go longer into their careers, along with not taking head shots.

They'll keep their brains so healthy that their bodies will fall apart first.

1980 pete rose is a very different animal than mid-80s reds player/manager pete rose, who was putting himself in the lineup sheet when he had really fallen off (and using corked bats) solely to chase the hits record.

Hell, that pete rose is basically the dictionary definition of stat-padding record chaser that adds little to nothing else.

But, yeah, he was still pretty great as an old prior to that point.
This is a good point--has anyone ever looked to see if Rose played in games he bet on or only played in games he "did not" bet on? It would be interesting to know what kind of player he thought he was at that point.

Ovy rocks, he’s the greatest goal scorer of all time and this whole thing is an epic tour of a guy who’s 37 years old and is still scoring like a top 10 player in the league. If you go by era-adjusted scoring he’s already #1. But since he’s not going for the era-adjusted goal scoring record, instead he’s just gonna keep scoring practically at will and just drive himself to the real record way faster than anyone thought possible. It’s awesome and anyone saying it’s not is being very boring.

I agree with all of this, but a nitpick — he’s not really #1 yet in era-adjusted scoring. The way that works, it’s mistakenly adjusting him up to a complete 2023 season. He’s still short by something like 20 adjusted goals away if we calculate it according to the fraction of the season that’s been played so far.
