No. I would absolutely not bet on it.

Michkov is an immediate star in the NHL. He has the potential to be a top-5 NHL player in his prime.

Personally, i would not draft him ahead of Fantilli or Carlsson, even Smith. But i don't think its crazy to think someone else would. He is the clear cut number two if there is no incertitude.

Admittedly I have been watching a lot of Leonard lately..

I think Leonard is a can't-miss prospect, in terms of..... he's FAST, big and strong (not huge, but a strong 6ft player), plays a power game to go along with his speed, has good hockey IQ, he makes plays, and has a great shot. What he brings to a team also is something Montreal (or any team) could use.

Dvorsky could be great but his skating is not the best already... and we want to build a fast team... as per Kent.

I think Leonard's floor and ceiling is pretty darn good...

The value of a big strong fast goal scoring power winger is high, and these are guys you want in the playoffs.

Also, Leonard will not only score highlight reel goals but garbage goals, tips, etc.... he is aggressive in that sense and likes to get his nose dirty.

This coupled with Columbus wanting to compete and make the post season now, convinces me the Jackets will not take Michkov. Assuming Fantilli is gone, do they take Smith or Carlsson ? But then you have the Sharks.

We could see about a trade with the Jackets but they would want to be assured of getting a C, so that would involve us going to 3, Jackets to 4 and Sharks dropping to 5. Pretty complicated and haven't seen that kind of thing since Burke grabbed the Sedins. Big ifs, Jackets would need to have Carlsson and Smith ranked real close,
and Sharks would need to want Michkov.

I believe Mckenzie has Smith ahead of Carlsson but most still have it the other way around.

Fantilli is a Duck. Jarmo will go Center, not sure who. Idk if SJ will go other Center or Michkov.

I'm just going to try and not worry about it because every inkling I've had about this front office has largely been wrong on these types of things. I never would have guessed we were trading for Dach in a million years, and was nearly certain they would just pick Wright with the draft taking place in Montreal and all that.

My gut feeling would be that they'll get spooked and go elsewhere at 5 but I also probably don't think we'll actually know. I just have to make a conscious decision to try not to freak out about every little bit of Michkov news for the next 7 weeks because I'll go insane if I do that. I really just hope they make the pick, if it blows up and he never comes to North America then so be it.

I’ll agree here on the sentiment. It does feel like the top 5 is the prize, excluding outside factors.

Worst comes to shove, just pick Michkov. Anything outside the 5 players Bedard, Fantilli Smith Michkov and Carlsson will be a wasted opportunity. No galaxy brain needed.

The way I see it we are in a very difficult spot. But we're in a spot that has great potential for reward.

That's why half the board is trying to trade with us to move up. We're gonna get a good player, and we might just get a great one.

In the perfect world, we get one of either Carlsson , Smith or Michkov, and everybody should rejoice at any 1 of those 3, ANY of those 3, we all should be doing backflips

In the Bad world however, which SEEMS like the one we are currently in, for now, as it looks, it will look something more like, 1. Bedard 2. Fantilli 3. Carlsson 4. Smith and at 5. Us. The pick should be Michkov here (it should be the pick at 2 even ffs) BUT, very strong chance they don't go there, which would obviously PISS me off but I would also know the "why" they wouldn't of done it as well, which is insane that that entire situation with him is happening at all.

So no, we can and most likely will do a WHOLE lot worse than "Smith" sadly,

We are going to have 2 months of this and we will drive ourselves nuts. Draft time the stress will be beyond as the fear for most will be that we pass on Michkov. I agree with other comments that if Michkov isn't here at the Combine that will be a problem.

If we pass on Michkov I will lose all faith that I have in this new front office. Whatever intel they gather on his situation with Russia etc would have to be devastatingly bad to pass on a player of his ilk imo.

I just don't see it. Hughes does not come off as a stupid man nor seem adverse to risk.
